I raced my friend tonight me in my 96 240SX-CAI, CAE, Hotshot header, and him in his 98 318 Bimmer RWD, 1.8 DOHC bone stock. We were halling ass down a good country back road. He would run off and leave me in the turns i tried to blast it through the turns one time but i braked about half way through and almost lost control started sliding but i regained control. That scared me a little so after that i just didn't push it as hard in the turns. Although, I would start to catch up with him a little in the straits but that #### bimmer would hug those turns insanely well. He did no the road alot better than i did but i still think i should've been able to keep up with him. What do u peeps think was it my driving or my car. Should i have been able to take that BMW?? TIN

You should have been able to take the BMW, the 318 sucks ballz.

But, he knew the road.. so yet again, its not the car.. its the driver.  Practice your driving style.. be safe, and eventually you will get the hang of things.

btw, is your car auto?  if not.. man!  318?  ouch..  :)

those beemers do real good in the corners, regardless of the engine, I went for a ride in a 318i, the guy was hauling ass around the an empty parking lot, man was i amazed. his suspension was pretty tuned though. The car felt really stable and if i did any of the things he did at that speed, I would have lost control.

I'm gonna have to say driver, too.  Knowing the road is half the battle.  When I outran the cop two X-mas' ago, I did it on my road in Idaho.  I've run this road ever since I was old enough to drive.  It's a really twisty 25 mph road with a concrete section and a dirt section.  I blasted up to 65 on ice on this road while outrunning the cop, but didn't dump it due to the fact that I know every inch of the road and it's excentricities.  (Plus I'm probably insane)  As for someone randomly running my road in Idaho, I could lose a 240, a 318, and probably just about any other car in my KA truck, even though it doesn't corner worth a ####, and doesn't have near the acceleration and speed.

Remember, brake halfway through the corner, then mash the gas on the outgoing half.  Or go balls out into the corner, and try and hold it.  Depends on the road, but if it's even slightly banked, going full throttle works well.  Especially if you can dip a wheel off the road surface so it's lower than the rest of the car.  Like rally racing hugging a ditch.

Go practice on that same stretch and you'll do fine.

Bimmers are strong handlers it's been their forte for years and by knowing the road your friend had a huge advantage.  I'd say secretly drive the road for awhile till you have it wired then challenge your friend to a run and redeem yourself.

there is something up with german enginering. my gf has a 2000 vw jetta vr6. anyways we went to the dealer for maintanance and the service guy told her the car felt sluggish and she should open it up on the freeway every once in a while. well we took off and were on this straight away and she floors it.  (her car is stock mine is a 95 w/ cai/jwt pop-charger/asp pulley/5zigen cat back/act clutch) i could not catch her. she couldn't leave me but from 50-100 i could not gain any ground. it totally sucked to here about that when we got home. granted of the line i think i could take her, but #### that car has good mid range power. well it was way off topic but i needed to share with my zilivia brother that also got taken by german engineering.

i think a lot of it had to do with the driver. i have lowering springs adjustable shocks and strut tower bars. i took my car through the back roads about 30 miles into the sticks to test out my rear strut tower bar, and i'll be damned if a hillbilly truck pulled up behind me, i laughed as i downshifted and pulled away. about 15 seconds later he's right behind me again. and we do that for the next minute, finally i drop my speed hit my flashers and pull over to the right to let him pass. he waved as he drove by in his "full size" "high rised" "big tired" truck and also his nearly as hillbilly friend in a s10 behind him passed me. i tried my damndest by hardly braking and flying around corners and dangerous speeds, but it's all about knowing the road and which parts you can and can't floor it.

The 318 is such crap.. atleast race a 325 or something better next time. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

As for the VR6, come on guys.. the car DOES have an extra 2 cylinders.. it should be EXPECTED that its faster.. as is, the car is better. &nbsp; If you're going to compare it, compare it with a FWD 6, not a RWD 4.
