this is my first thread on the forum and was just looking to see if any one could really give me advice on my 1990 240sx hatch. i bought the car a wial ago because i really love nissans and the hatch i loved how they look. this one i found with a KA24DE but the problem is that i beleive not sure that the head gasket is bad because white smoke comes out from the exhaust. :/ So i want to put all brand new gaskets from top to bottom but i do not know how to do timing no does my friend that will help me with this build. and i was wondering if you guys know how to and could show me how, plus also help me out and let me know what i should do because i have had a few mechanics see it and say that just to swap the engine and they could find me another one because to rebuilt the one i have would cost more that just changing it. So i dont know what i really should do but i hope you all can help me out. i dont have much money but little by little i will get my 240sx up and soon to drift that bad girl ;) (even tho i do not know how to drive manual but i will learn)

I hope you're wearing your flame suit...

Honestly if you guys truly have no idea how timing works you probably shouldn't be doing a head gasket.
If your trying to learn engine mechanics, that's great, there are plenty of guides all over the internet and how to's about your problem and many others.
But your mechanic friend also has a point, its probably gonna be easier to swap in a motor, just go find a dual cam on craigslist and drop it in.
Pretty sure you have a ka24e(single cam) btw, unless someone has already swapped it once before.

Finally, if you want something on these forums, the search button on the top right is your best friend

Ironically there is a book called a factory service manual that will tell you EVERYTHING

Like legoctf said if you have a DOHC engine, someone swapped it already so that's a plus.
Its one of those things, if your looking to get your hands dirty and get some personal experience, I say go for it.
Do a simple google search on what your wanting to do and you should be able to find some helpful info.

Heres a link to a write up that should point you in the right direction.
How to Replace the Head Gasket of a 240SX | eHow.com (http://www.ehow.com/how_7978724_replace-head-gasket-240sx.html)
Good luck!

Some helpful tips. Mark EVERYTHING before you pull it apart. Take tons of photos too. that way you don't hafta wonder "hey is this upside down?". I use big sheets of cardboard to lay everything out on so it won't get mixed up (cam caps, etc).

Gotta warn ya tho, asking questions on zilvia is kinda a no-no if you haven't THOROUGHLY searched already. 99% of the new threads posted with questions have been THOROUGHLY answered in a dozen threads already, so another thread askin the same question just adds to the clutter and makes this site less simple to navigate through.

Yeah look on ebay or craigslist and purchase a manual. Found mine on ebay pretty cheap and in great condition. And sound's like you indeed have a blown head gasket. Welcome to zilvia, there's a lot of info on the web try and search next time. You can find anything you need by searching. Goodluck

Come on man, there are tech threads and this has been covered so many times.

No one here will hold your hand every step either, this is your adventure and endeavor. The factory service manual or FSM comes in handy here.:mepoke:

You're probably one of those people who just bought a 240sx and think they can drift master right away. It costs a whole lot of money and takes a whole lot of work to accomplish. It's a great platform to start working on cars, but if you don't want to put in any of your own wrench time and hard work in, a Nissan is not for you. It's getting to the age where not a lot of people will know how to work on them anymore so you really can't trust other people to touch your car.

If you can't use correct grammar and punctuation in creating YOUR own thread, what makes us think you have the mental capacity to rebuild a motor?

As everyone else said though, there's plenty of write-ups everywhere on how to do this. You really should've searched first.

Grammar has nothing to do with mental capacity. It might just show that he is lazy and lacks potential to pay attention, especially in school. ADD maybe?
I've known people that have the skills and common sense to work on cars and put them back together fixed, and they can't spell for shit.

But to the OP:
If you want to fix something why would you do it without knowing what the hell to do?
Headgasket is not like changing an alternator, where you figure it out as you go. and there is a slim change of messing up.
It's safe to think you overtorqued/ under-tightened head bolts and cam caps, or have switched the cams. It's cool if you want to learn to work on your car, but do research. Shit there is even videos on youtube showing you how to do it.

And drifting is not just have a 240, drive and go ebraking. I got $10k+ in mine and it's far from done.

Yeahh i dont care how much money i invest because its all about learning and having fun , plus learning new things along the way with this build and drifting is one of my last things on my mind. Like i said i know jack sh** about driving manual car. The memorys and having the pride in building my vehicle is what i am mostly interested in.

Good luck having fun on a car that wont be running if you fuck it all up. Like already said, you'd be better off finding another engine and swapping that in. Learn to rebuild the original engine you pulled out instead, atleast you'd have a drivable car.

+1 on this I have a blown head gasket as well and I must say its some what of a ass to replace and it's not as fun has you might think. Also if you new to this your better off swapping motors saves you money and if you wanna drift that extra hundreds could buy you a welded diff and some good used tires to slide

It really does not matter because i am not driving the car, i am driving my truck so either way i go i still have a back up vehicle to use for college and work. Plus i rather get things done the first time and the right way with no easy ways out of this because what if i do swap the engine and later on end up like this again? Then i will have two motors that dont work .
