I have a fairly new set of Polk speakers, theyre 4.5 or 5 inches round, I forget...If I made some kind of bracket to make them fit in the rear, like cut myself a piece to make them fit, would they get lost back there or is it better to have the 4x6 size?? Anyone put round speakers in the back oem location? I think theres something to be said for making the job air-tight too so you get some acoustic sort of thing going on- i remember i just put the speakers back there once loosely and you couldnt even hear them

any ideas?

ya, you could get some plate 4X6 speakers, they have like 3-4in mid, with a 2in tweeter.

I installed this set in my hatch:

Ya, you really don't need tweeters in the back, Just some mid bass, and a nice sub woofer.

Just get the factory 4X6 speaker, and trace it on some 1/4 plywood and cut it out, and cut a hole out for the speaker you have, this will take some work but is doable, and should sound better than most 4X6 speaker, or plates.

I have some custom plates I made for CDT 5 1/4 componets in the front, sounds damn good BTW, I just use the rears for some back fill. I would like to get some 6 1/2 mid bass and get rid of the 4X6 plates, for the best sound.

Good luck with your project.

I usd 1/2" mdf baffle and 5.25" midranges in the rear of my car, no problems.

andrave, pics would be nice. If its hatch, I dont know how you did it. Twitchy isnt that a bad spot for those tweeters imaging wise? I would have rather installed them flush on the door panel like usual.

it was a hatch, and I don't have pics, and I sold it with the midranges still in there, in the mdf baffles. mdf is medium density fiberboard, its the standard material most speaker enclosures are built from, available at lowes. 3/4" is normal for sub enclosures but for door buildouts or speaker baffles I use 1/2" so it fits under panels.
all I did was trace the plastic outline including screw holes, cut it out and drill it, screw the speaker into the baffle, counter sink where the screw holes would be, and then use a stubby screw driver to put it back where the factory piece was.
But I'm a pretty experienced installer (you can see my last two installations on my page if you are interested). The rears looked pretty much like the fronts, here is a pic of them:
