What do you mean ? You hit the starter physically to get it to turn over ? If that's the case, sounds like your starter solenoid is bad. Shimming it won't do a thing.

Yeah if I hit it, it turns over... Starter was known good. And worked perfect in the previous motor

Yeah kinda what I was thinking when I was told to shim it... And here's the run down its wire tucked... I got a 1G wire from positive to distributor box and that's getting 12v all wires coming out of distributor box getting 12v and power to starter and alt is 12v! This is the 3rd starter I install that does the same thing..could it be the flywheel?

are you getting new starters or used ones?

just get a new starter. Problem solved. Mine was tested and was working. I would have to bang it to get it to turn over. So bought a new starter and it solved the problem. Do not waste anymore time. Buy a new starter and be done with it.

tested starts can pass the voltage test, but the bendix can be sticking and needs a tap to free it up.
autozone/oreillys starters, alts, ect. are known to have problems out the box, so you just may have bad luck.

I've had 1 autozone starter go bad in less than a year, and then got it replaced under warranty and got another that was bad out of the box, and then a second one that started the car 3 times and also went bad.
