ECU question..96&97

I havent been able to start my car(96 obd2 manual) for almost 2 months now, after trouble shooting everything its come down to the car not getting any spark. We checked the distributor and everything seemed fine. So we swapped out the ecu with a 97 manual, and it still didnt start. I decided to bring the car to a shop, and they said that the ecu was bad.

So my question is will a 96 run with a 97 ecu without switching the 3 wires around?
