View Full Version : Another Diff Question

I have searched both this forum and the rest of the world wide web on the best way to clean a used diff out before changing the lube. This is for a Stock 240 VLSD
I couldn't find anything on here but I have read of some people using Oven Cleaner on domestic Posi units.
Has anyone ever used this on a VLSD? Does anyone see anything against it?
What does everyone here use to essentially flush a diff out before putting new fluid in.
Also i intend on using either Royal Purple or the Mobil 1 75w90 Gear oil. Any other suggestions.
I'm sure I will get flame sprayed by a few but I appreciate any advice given on the subject.

VLSD's are a sealed unit so if you're concerned that it's going to damage the fluid in that unit, it should be fine.
Probably not the smartest way to go about it but I used brake cleaner for my VLSD pumpkin over a fluid pan, just wiped the excess off, & disposed properly. I've been using this VLSD for about a year now (maybe less?) but it hasn't given me a problem.
And since it doesn't matter what gear oil you use for a VLSD, any oils that are used for 240 differentials will be fine. I used Mobil gear oil.

I don't intend on disassembling the unit to clean it out. I assume that makes a difference.

A can of brake cleaner and some rags could be used to clean it out if it had been sitting for a long time with the cover off or something. Just remember where the shims are positioned if you take the main gear assembly out.
And don't waste your money putting fancy gear oil into the VLSD diff. Like the other guy said also, the actual VLSD mechanism is sealed and does not require "LSD" specific fluid. I run the autozone coastal brand 75-90w in my VLSD and it works great..

IF you don't plan on doing that, at least take the rear cover off and inspect. Then fill her up and go.

Yeah i don't intend on taking it apart. I opened it up and everything looks sounds. Don't see any metal chunks and the teeth look good.
So i guess I will just shoot it out with a couple cans of brake cleaner and fill it back up.
Thanks Everyone!
