Hey guys
I'm having a really horrible issue with my RB25 suddenly jerking like crazy, not wanting to rev and then completely dying on me. When I try to start it back up it just turns over then dies! I've gotta rev it up while starting it to keep it going. This is a stock S1 setup with bolt ons.
At first I was having problems with it breaking up badly at around 4-5k RPM and was told its most likely the coil packs. I bought LS7 truck coils but haven't done the switch over it.
Car will run great for about 15-20 minutes before the problems come! It will happen in any gear and as soon as it happens it feels like the RPM won't rev past 4k as it starts bogging like the car is turning on and off.
I have checked for boost leaks (none)
Checked plugs
Checked fuel pressure
Checked for spark
Checked for codes
I'm really stumped. Does this sound like a MAF problem or are my coil packs really that toast?! Walbro fuel pump going out?
OH YA! Changed my spark plugs and the next day the tips were straight frosted white!!!!!

Did you get the right temp spark plugs? Sounds like an overheating problem

It could be a timing issue as well. Check the CAS.

Yes I got the correct heat range plugs :)
Haven't checked CAS yet! How can you check without a timing light if it may be bad? I would mess with it but don't have a timing light to check how much I'm off.
Thanks

Did you try replacing the engine water temp sensor? Sounds like the sensor may be bad since you said it would run fine then when the engine gets up to temp, it starts running like poop.

^^^^ yea, sounds like when the motor reaches operating temp it takes a shit. but I dont think that would be the temp sensor..... Most common issue with temp sensors is it doesnt want to start back up after turning it off after reaching operating temp. Never read of bucking, missing and dying becuase of a bad temp sensor. Sounds just like a maf sensor to me. I could be wrong. test it or change it anyway its a cheap part.

I did replace the water temp sensor about a year ago!
Taking out the plugs and look what cylinder #2 spark plug shows after 2 days.

BAD INJECTOR? LEAKY INJECTOR?

I dont believe this is the problem but would it shows the signs I'm having?

Probably the MAF. Coilpacks would likely only act up if you were building boost and it would feel like it was falling on its face. Since it is dying on you entirely, it is likely a more global issue like the MAF, CTS, or CAS. Do all the plugs look that white or is it just one?
Do not bother changing out the plugs.
Odd question here, but is your battery located in the trunk?

About 3 out of the 6 plugs looked like that! Not sure how tO check the CAS without having a timing light on hand to see how far I'm off (which I don't have).
Yes the battery is located in the trunk :)

I can't help, but want to say it is the coil packs that are gone to shit

Take out the CAS and pull the bracket as well. Make sure that stupid aluminum bracket is not cracked and bent, the CAS could of been improperly installed.
As for checking the CAS, you can put the key in the ON position and with the CAS plugged in, but not installed, you can turn it and listen for the injectors clicking.
Also, if you have a diagnostic tool you can plug it in and see what the computer thinks the timing is, you should be at about 15deg on idle per the FSM.

My car is having the same issue. Its a timing issue. I broke the tab off the end of my exhaust cam so I can't properly line up my cas. To check the timing with out a gun simply take out your spark plug from cylinder one and place a screw driver into the cylinder. Take off cas and timing cover as well. Use a socket and I belive its a 27mm to turn the crank shaft until the harmonic balancer marks line up with the 0° mark. Then check your cam gears for the small indentions and see if they line up with the marks on the outer timing case cover. Mine atm is too high so it starts then immediately dies. If it was your maf it would stay running since it would be in limp mode which wouldn't allow you to rev last like 2500 or 3000 rpms. My maf also took a crap on me lol
