OP, personally I would go for the 240 out of the two. If you wanna go rotary, get an Fd, but age wise that would be no better than the 240. I know you can pick up a decent 350z for around 15k, there's a pretty decent inventry of those out there. And it would afford you the chance to try a straight 6 on for size. Anyhow...food for thought.

This sums the choices you posted up perfect. If you want a 240 but can afford the RX8, look into a 350z or G35. Modern comforts as well as modern reliability and they both have really good aftermarkets.

Rx8 is one helova balanced machine. IMO that engine is one of the funnest engines to drive and support for that car is pretty awesome. I LOVE the rx8 BUT simply just can't afford it. Why? because that engine needs to be kept in top shape. Nice and lubed but with the price of petroleum going up, both oil and gas become annoying to buy. All the emissions make it a little unstable with response. If you don't mind removing it, it makes it THAT much easier to work on. Again, this here is a financial factor IMO lol.
I too agree with na12uto that a 350z is a bang for the buck

If you are building an all out drift car a base wouldnt be a bad choice. They are cheaper. The pumpkins are all the same on the open diff and VLSD's. The only differences are the output shafts/axle stubs. Swap those out and you can use any diff you want.
IMO I would also go with a 350z. They are getting easier to find for pretty cheap. I bought an 03 touring with 55k miles in 09 for 14.5k. Like earlier stated they are a good bang for the buck cars.
Dont get me wrong, I like the RX8 a lot, but it will definitely be a money pit. Aftermarket parts are "slim pickens" as some say in the south. Cold start issues and fuel flooding if you dont let the car warm up every time you start it. Too much of a hassle if your going to be a daily as well. Keep in mind I have never owned a RX8 these are just things that I have read.
I would lurk around the RX8 forums and do a little more research so you can make a better informed decision based on your needs.

I have a pure stock 98 s14 with front and rear tanabe sway bars and ebay front and rear strut bars. Thats enough to enjoy my commute as a daily driver. I get better handling with a full tank of gas; when low, its still very stable.
Only down fall I have is the lack of power, but that comes with any car after driving it for some time. The suspension needs to be beefed up too.
IMO the RX8 is an overall better car, but has this cockiness to it. S14 Kouki has an aggressive look but passes as unique because of its rarity. You are what you drive.

95-98 240 isn't in the same category as the RX8. I hate Mazda and I think they're shitty but I never owned an RX8. I had a Mazda6 for a time and while everything that broke, broke on Mazda's dime, there was a solid 7 months (LITERALLY) I didn't drive that car. So I'm biased. From what I've read, they're finicky.
That aside, if you want a more modern fun to drive RWD car and you've got 15k to spend, your options aren't really limited. Both 350Z's and G35's can be had for that much. You can get Mustang GT's for that as well. 08-09. Sure, it only has the 4.6.l but that only sux in comparison to other V8's. It's not a beast, but it ain't bad. You may even be able to slip up on a G8 GT.
You've got some options though. As much as I love the 240, that isn't really a factor if you want something more modern.

I went through this decision as well... You gotta ask yourself: What are your power goals? What level of HP will you be happy with and much much does it take it get there?
With bolt ons, you're going to be making about 220hp to the wheels with the RX8. Want more? Gotta go turbo. Talk about pain in the ass. I hope you're planning of becoming adept with rebuilding rotaries.
I agree with the guys saying go newer with something like the 350Z. The Z can realistically put 280hp and good torque to the wheels with simple bolt ons and a tune. More if you wanna swap cams. Combined with a 3.980 or 4.08 final drive and you have a decently quick car that is pretty reliable. Want more power though? The VQ loves supercharging. But I'd rather nitrous, personally.
Right now, I'm shopping for a Rev up Z. Some ppl are scared off by their oil burning reputation but they don't all burn oil and topping off oil levels isn't all that hard. The Rev up responds a tad bit better to mods than the earlier VQ. I'll take my chances on the oil burning situation.

You don't want a revup, unless it was manufactured after 04/06 IIRC. Those are less prone to oil consumption. The consumption is bad about 1 quart per 1-2k miles in most cases. Just get the non-revup DE or HR. Also, N/A power does not come cheap and is almost pointless. I am @ 290hp/286tq (mustang dyno) at the same cost as an FI setup. If you want power, just go FI off the bat.

A friend of mine owned an RX8, and it was prone to loads of problems. In the short year he had it, the 13bmsp blew up twice. Also the RX8 hates oil changes. We had one at work come in as a trade, and they serviced it the damn thing wouldn't start afterwards. Come to find Mazda put out a technical bullentin acknowledging the problem but with no fix. They deemed the issue to be lack of compression from oil pressure loss. Needless to say it took a good 1-2hrs to get the thing started back up

Hey guy, just so you know RX-8 is possibly the worst car ever made.
I owned one and drove it for 2 days. Put it up for sale on day three and sold it on day four.
It takes talent to make a car that has no power AND gets bad gas mileage.
The seats feel like they are trying to vomit you at all times. It also sounds like a can of bees in the trap.

Peeps, just know rx8 is no rx7... ya know? lol Family sports car, what more where you expecting. Still a decent amount of hp out of a 1.3.. And yes, not knowing about gas milage, its use of oil and everything else that comes with it is entirely the buyers fault lol..

I fail to see how you're comparing the 350z to the RX-8. Mazda axed the RX-8 cuz it sucked, and they didnt get enough sales. 350z didnt get axed, it just evolved into the 370z. Production never stopped. Some people today still prefer the handling of the 350z over the 370z.
Besides, the 350z stopped selling not because they sucked, it was because the economy went down the shitter and everybody stopped buying cars in general. Even now, car sales of the all 370z hasnt even reached the number of 350z sold in its first year of production.
2004 350z = 36k sold
2009-2011 370z = 30k sold

hmmmm part of this sound real familiar except I have not picked up an 86. LOL
Oh and I am stuck with a middle of the build 240 that I most likely will have to finish. LOL
Of course I am thinking hard about getting a Z.
The same reason Nissan stopped making 350Zs. It was a dated model, sales dropped, and it was time for the next model.
Ya Nissan stopped making the 350 because yes its model cycle was done. That part you got right. The part about dropping sales you got wrong. Sales had nothing to do with it beyond Cycle timing.
Nissan product cycles run 3-6 years depending on models.
For instance the Datsun 510 first came out in 1968 and ran until 1973 5 years. the S30 240Z came out in 1970 and was sold until 1973. The anomaly in this that would reflect your sales argument would have been the S30 260Z which was only made one year 1974. It was heavier and did not have enough power. The 280z was brought out in 1975 because of this. Of course all of these were based on the S30 chassis but with modifications for crash safety standards that raised the weight of the cars significantly.
Hence the 240Z s30 being the most desirable because its lighter.
Though to say Nissan killed the 350 because of sales? LOL The 370 is actually a better vehicle in performance and handling in comparison to the 350Z yet its sales have lagged behind the 350z but Nissan is still making it. By your own statement above Nissan should kill it already, though it came out in the middle of a deep recession where all car sales where off, especially sports car sales.
Unless you live where I do where things defy economics.
OP should buy a Z and call it a day. Don't bother with the Ugly RX8! Ya I called the car ugly, it is so there!

Thank you Im gonna go 240 stick what i know and not worry about the rotary. And im surprised on how some people talk to somebody thats in the army living in korea. Yeah youre welcome.
Listen, POG, don't go on the internet playing the military card. Korea is a joke. It's a duty station. There is no war there. There are no fire fights. You get pissed when the BK runs out of sweet potato fries. Coming from an 11B that just got medevac'd from Afghanistan fighting for these dudes on the forum that respect us without even knowing those who went over and fought [because we don't go on here posting about how hard life is in fucking Korea of all places], I advise you buy your RX-8, go join the rotary forums, and delete your account.
I absolutely hate douchers that play that card. No one has sympathy. You signed up to be a cook or fueler or whatever stupid job you have. Us real guys will handle the business. You handle getting in trouble for smoking spice and other dudes poles.
/end.
