I decided to do my interior one piece @ a time. im changing the interior from brown to black. i got the kick panels and runners from other cars. as for the pillars, door panels and glove box i decided to rewrap them in back and carbon fiber vinyl that i found.
started with the A pillars did them with carbon turned out good.
i used red scotch bright to rough up the pillar then cleaned it with degrease simple green or you can just wash with soap and water.http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0911.jpgthis is the finished a pillar
used 3m 8090 super trim adhesive thats a must its on the expensive side but worth it. $22 at autozone. so to cut down on wasted glue i made outline of the part so i know were no to spray. i also tried 3m 90 and it didnt hold very good.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0912.jpgin the car i also redid my headliner in black sued but thats a different diy:naughty:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_2617.jpg

this is the rear window cover for a coupe its 2 pieces i broke the plastic weld off and going to 2 separate pieces

I haven't tried that 3M one, curious on how it turns out.
I know 3M 80 is designed for headliner use as it can withstand 200F. With that kinda strength, pillars are cakewalk. It costs around $15 at Home Depot.

I used the 3m 90 but it didn't hold this 3m super trim is what the 3m rep told me to use because some vinyls have plasticizers in it and will sometimes cause adhesive bond failure. 3M (TM) Super Trim Adhesive, PN08090 is good plasticizer resistant adhesive.

idk why you cut it into two. if you knew how to cut the material right you could have streched it all in there. we did all the basic stuff in the rangers we use to have back in high school, 3M is good product for alot of stuff, keep up the work just dont over load your car with it all

dont think it would have been as easy to do it as one whole piece this vinyl isnt think its thick its not easy to stretch. plus you would have seen the seem were the two parts join together. i plan on probably doing the glove box next or the last back seat part on the driver side. if anyones interested I'm going to end up having an extra glove box either in black sued or this carbon vinyl depending one which looks better in my ca, so if anyone is interested in buying it.
heres some pics of the sued headliner i did

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0862.jpgi added some reflective insulation for good measures it helps keep the heat down worked good

That's the stick on stuff isn't it? I did mine like that but didn't come out as good as that I didn't clean it good enough it lifted on the curved edged towards the pocket. The stuff I'm using is real vinyl and it's on the thick side so not great for complicated parts like that. I'll update my progress with pics tomorrow got the other a pillar done looks good and the give box is not so hot this stuff have a stretching limit till the pattern stretches and turns just black so the conclaved indent for the handle didn't turn out so good but it gets hidden by the handle for most part.

Nice man, i've dabbled in this a couple times now. First wrapped my door panels when i first got my s-chassis.
First time with generic adhesive, lasted probably a year max. Non stretch fabric.

Just did these the other night, all wrinkled because i haven't cut-out and installed the power window controls and door handle trim. Also going to trim it out with black piping of course, or it wont look finished
This time with 3m trim adhesive.
And goo gone

The insert fabric looks thin. Is there a backing on it?I wish there was a thinner carbon vinyl but there isn't I have prepped the driver door panel to attempt it but Been holding off on it doing smaller trim peices to get some more practice in. I am about to move up to the big guns with a spray gun and weldwood contact cement like the upholstry shops use I'll post pics tomorrow. Hard stuff to get cause it been outlawed in Ca but u can get it in small 8oz cans only better than nothing for now

Im hoping to use an HVLP based contact cement, broadfield recomended me a good one i'll grab the name later.
The fabric is thin, no backing. These doors are temps, i just couldnt resist doing them so i didnt get the backing.

with that kind of pattern you want non strech, the reason being if it streched the material wouldnt line up sraight and would have all kinds of waves in it, you made the right choice the glue we use in upholstery we get it in 5 gal jugs and will get you higher than a kite when spraying it. super expensive if you dont do a lot of upholstry or spraying

so heres what the box box turned out looking like
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0929.jpgfinished
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0920.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0928.jpg
you can see where the pattern faded. everything but that one spot looks great. i had to add another piece at the handle area to cover it thats y you can see pattern at the inner edge.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/Hernando1459/IMG_0927.jpg
so i havent sprayed with the weld wood just yet but hear great things its been outlawed in large amounts in CA can only get it in select places in 8oz cans and its $8 something so a gallon would end up costing $65 when they sell the gal for $32 in other states.

Shit looks great! I've been wanting to do this on my S14 for a while after seeing a friends E39, very good way to update the interior without looking too gawdy.

Thanks! I would recommend using a stronger glue to prevent bubbling. This was the second one that I did so I'm still learning

Yeah Norm, you will want to use contact cement out of a spray gun. There isn't an aerosol spray adhesive on the planet that will hold over time and in heat. The DAP stuff works great.

Let me know of you find it cause it's probably banned in ca due to vocs

Did you remove the old material off of your headliner before applying the suede? What side did you place the reflective material on? Top or underside before applying suede?

Cruz_240sx
08-24-2012, 04:41 PM
I left the old on was in good shape. The reflective material is on the underside that faces the roof. Make sure to leave room on the edges cause it's to thick to get some trim back on if it's to close to edge.

Hopefully your adhesive will stick better than mine did. First time around my suede was installed the same way. Started peeling off at the track due to the heat. Eventually got tired of it and took it off completely. Removed old headliner material and used 3M adhesive from AutoZone and has worked fine. Though I haven't driven the car enough to really see how it puts up in heat.

how much fabric did you use to wrap the panels?

Cruz_240sx
09-30-2012, 10:35 PM
I got like 2-3 yards. I haven't finished yet lack of time but the pillars are done just need to do the 2 rear panels. Make sure to sand n clean very good so it sticks.
