i advanced my timing on my ka24e by1 so its 16 right now, and i was doing research on it cuz i got scared of detonation. i was wondering if advancing it by 1 degree would do that, and if i should use premium octane to alleviate the problem ive done research and i get mixed answers about it, like it makes it worse or it makes it better, just want some thoughts on this situation..

It really depends on the condition of the engine. I had my KA24DE cranked almost to the max at 20* BTDC completely stock and running 91 octane, but it had only ~40K since I rebuilt it. I had a friend do the same thing, but his engine had some miles on it and it popped up with a knock MIL pretty quickly so we backed it off. Personally, I probably wouldn't push past stock spec much if it has more than a 100K.

Running a higher octane gas will definitely help. Honestly though 1* probably won't do much of anything weather it be risking knock or improving power.

1 degree is nothing. It's not going to make your engine blow up, nor is it going to give you much more power, especially on an NA engine.

If you're worried though, just put good fuel in it.

good advice, and I also recommend NOT advancing the timing from the OEM position. There is very little to be gained.

any good write ups on advancing or retarding timing on a sohc without a light?

Without a light? I don't think that's possible... You're just guessing without a light unless you previously marked where your cas/distributor was to get 15 degrees.

Rent a light for free from your local Advance/Autozone.

thanks thought you could put it TDC or whatever and make sure its at top then rotate accordingly

I noticed a big difference with my car being tuned. The timing was pretty much all I changed.

We were talking about advancing the crank timing by a single degree.
There's a big difference between that and having the whole timing map tuned...

Our point was that a single degree is basically nothing. It won't give any noticeable power increase nor will it cause the car to detonate; it's just a single, measly degree.

i have a bone stock 89 ka24e on mine with about 40k on it. i advanced the ignition timing to 20 degrees at 1000 rpm with out pulling the tps off. i only use 91 octane and i have not had any detonation issue even with 100 degree plus weather. i did notice a better low end response. we also advanced my nephews ignition timing on his stock 5mge 87 cressida from 5 degrees to 12 degrees at 800 rpm and he was so happy because he gained so much more bottom end that he said he does not have to step on the throttle as much to take off from start. also makes the idle much better. he also uses 91 octane fuel. i used to run a dynojet years ago, and advancing the timing was always the first thing i do. so i`m not guessing when i say it does make a difference. BUT, you will lose a little top end due to whats called negative torque, but that`s a different story.
