View Full Version : Alignment... ripped off??
got drift
08-02-2012, 11:15 PM
Just payed $268 for an alignment for my s13 240sx... yes $268 bucks. so did i get ripped off or was it the dudes first time aligning a car and it actually took him 2.5 hours as he claimed...?
Suspension modes...
-stance GR+ coilovers
-17x9 rims
-rear traction arms
-rear toe arms
-rear upper camber arms
-front tension rods
-aluminum subframe bushings
I put these parts on myself and eyeballed everything to fit (except for the coilovers which where properly aligned before). the car is not slammed either
I thought using aftermarket arms makes the job of alignment much quicker, especially at a shop that supposedly specializes in alignments.
If I knew it would have cost $268 bucks I would have done what this dude did...

So... does this make sense? did I get ripped off? or does 2.5 hours sound normal for and alignment that has all new suspension parts?
Any input would be great thanks!

Why the fuck did you agree to that??? I would have told them to get fucked. I did alignments for many years and pretty much everything was $99-129 for 4wheel alignments on a hunter rack, even custom/track stuff.

I got mine corner-weighted and balanced, and aligned after installing coils, cost 290 bucks. Ask him if he did all that, if not, you got hosed, hoser.

It does seem a bit high, I haven't seen an alignment exceed 150 unless parts needed to be replaced.:wiggle:

I paid that much in Okinawa Japan for that much but we didn't have any choice since they're the only one on island that has a working rack.

Learn to do string alignments yourself.
Setting toe is actually most zilvian's would need to learn about since camber is set to whatever-fits-my-tight-wheels-yo specs

:shakemyhead: at people just joining in at the bashing, but I can see why.
I guess this is why there is a "Small Questions" thread so you can ask a stupid question before you take stupid action.
PS. Did anyone notice OP is in Canadia

in some places (oil country) labour is very expensive. in my town the going shop rate is 90-130 an hour; but an alignment is 1 hour labour; always if the mechanic is competent. next time make sure they charge a flat rate for an alignment and dont charge extra if adjustments are needed.

I paid about $70 at a local Nissan dealership. Set to what I wanted. Took forever but luckily they have flat rate for alignments and not an hourly labor charge.
I had installed all new spl arms all around and installed new tein flex coils, drove it around for a week to let the coils settle, and took it to a local "race car" shop and he did it in about an hour for 140$. I think it was worth it, he was starting from scratch. Now it will be cheaper because i will only need little adjustments here and there.

its probably because the guy was confused with all the extra adjustments on the suspension. Initially my buddy had the same issue but he didnt rip me off.
Usually you should go to a specialist shop that tunes race cars etc... they know this kind of stuff plain and simple..
At that price your alignment should'e came with a bottle of KY jelly.
My guy charges $75.
