hi,

i'm Pieter Gouwy from belgium and i'm flying over to Los Angeles by the end of september and plan to sty there for 2 weeks.

plan is to buy a car to drift on some tracks and use it to get arround to visit some cool shops so we know where to go to for outsiders 2 if it comes to the US.

(for those who don't know outsiders)
Outsiders: Feature length drift film - Trailer One - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0-71NflWWQ)

so the questions are:

how can i as foreigner get a car to drive arround from place to place legaly?
how can i get it back to florida to have it shipped to europe?
what shops should we deff visit?
what tracks can we go to?

kind regards
Pieter Gouwy

do you have an international drivers license?
here is a helpful link for acquiring a US drivers license if you are from another country:
Foreign Visitors Driving in the U.S. | USA.gov (http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Foreign-Visitors-Driving.shtml)

once you buy a car, you can get it back to Florida by either shipping it

or driving it across country. shipping from Los Angeles to Florida will be around $1000
or more.

i could just leave it behind then :D

and yeah i've got a international driving license, but it's more the stuff like insurance and registration that i'm wondering about, how does that work?

thanks for the info!
really worth a lot to me.

So thats it? I only need insurance?
There is no registration to be done with the state or anything?
If so, damn europe sucks...

you dont really have to register it because you either plan on shipping the car out or leaving it behind and by doing either of those theres no point in spending the $100 or whatever it is on registiring it when you probably wont even get the tags or pink slip in your name before you even leave if they mail it to you and doubt you need that anyways in europe...

ive drivin one of my 240 for about 2 months before i even registered it but i had full coverage insurance on it

You may be able to get a temporary 30 day pass still but I am not sure if California still does that, if not you have to register and get an emissions test with the state, or rather the person selling the car is responsible for the emissions test but more often then not they will dump it on you. If the seller refuses to smog the car before the sale walk away. If your willing to take the risk of buying a untested car, since you may not be familiar with California's emissions testing laws I would take someone who knows about it with you to buy the car. This state is quite strict on that test. If you get a S13 your looking at about $80USD for registration plus applicable transfer fees and taxes.

Now Vegas on the other hand is pretty lax on non citizens registering cars. There is a non citizen student in one of my college classes that said it was easier to register there then it was to deal with the California DMV.

1. Rent a car or apply for a international drivers license.
2. You have to find a shipping company and pay for the car to be shipped to florida.
3. What kind of shops do you want to visit?
4. Willow Springs is the closest real race track near LA for drifting and time attack. Thursday nights there is a small go kart track in riverside called Adams track which is small but you can drift it.

Did they ever clean up their act at Adams? I know there was a lot of hooking up buddies for the competitions and such, and over charging for like 3 runs in a whole day.
