I have a 95 240sx shell with 200k miles on it and a salvage title, I'm in the process of putting a fully built s15 sr20det into it. I'm wondering as far as resale would it mean anything to anyone about the mileage on the chassis ? would i be better off buying a different shell and using that ?

Here's my opinion. If you're building a car just to worry about the resale value, get
A different Hobby. If you're building a car because you love it,
Resale Value won't matter. Either way, the only thing that deteriorates the worth of a chassis is rust and straightness. Otherwise all bushings can be replaced.

Personally, I would not buy a car with a salvage title, if that is what you're asking?

It all comes down to how much you'd sell it and how much a person is willing to pay for it. Would you sell it for $6k with an S15 SR swap in it? Somebody would more than likely buy it. Would anybody pay over $10k for it, probably not with the salvage title unless its loaded up with goodies (engine upgrades, suspension, wheels, interior, bodykit, etc).

Yes I'm just wondering how everyone felt about a salvage title car, and if anyone felt it would dramatically affect the price . And if you think someone should get a new hobby because they want to build a resell a car you need to think that statement over . Who doesn't enjoy extra money and get to drive a slick car for a month or two ?

when people buy cars usually the first thing they look at is the title. I say sell and buy another shell.

It will affect the price some. I don't know about drastically though. It will limit your buyers though because a lot of people would stay away from salvage titled cars including myself.most people i know that buy salvage title cars use them as track vehicles.

If you're going to be looking to sell it after it's built, I would ditch the salvage chassis. If you're looking to never get rid of it, track it, and make it a part of you're life, then the title is'nt such a big deal. I never understand when someone puts time and money into building a car, knowing damn well that they will be selling it. I could never build a car to sell it. Not to mention, resale on modified imports is very low. I have just over 22k into my S13, and I'd be lucky to sell it for 12k.

how do we feel about a salvage title? hmmm.... that all depends bud
let me cut through some fat and get to the nitty gritty. owning a car that is salvaged is like marrying a girl who's been gang-banged by 50 guys in all 6 holes. salvaged why, and salvaged how? you typically dont acquire a salvage title unless its been damaged in a real bad way, or one that exceeds half its value (do i have that right?) that right there, should do a great job at diminishing any potential interest from anyone with:
- a working brain
- a pocket full of money
as for your hobby of trying to buy and sell cars, and trying to make a profit while doing so, good luck with that. ive seen enough people fail at that...

Yeah you got that right.
Also, my car does have a rebuilt title, and I bought it salvaged, but that's because I knew the damage it had, and I don't really care because I won't sell my car, unless I part it out anyway. Other than that... I don't think I'd buy a rebuilt title car. (Unless I'm the one fixing it and know that damage it has prior to fixing it).

Well on that note if anyone has a shell I'm interested . Must be a s14 unless it's a silvia swapped s13

I made money selling my first S14. Bought it for $13k, sold it for $13.5k...PROFIT!!! So in your face Mike!!!
Then again, it was sold 6 yrs later and probably $25k in upgrades in it.
Be pointless to build it up and then re-sell it. Your going to loose money either way. I don't even know why you picked the S15 motor esp if your going to build it up. Could have saved yourself some cash if you went with a s14 sr (basically same motor as s15 with some minor differences) or better yet a s13 sr.

No, if you wanna buy and sell you'll lose money. Plus you're going s15 sr20 that's huge and you shouldn't do that if you're gonna plan on selling it. People who do swaps never get back what they put into the car regardless if it's a clean title or not. You're better off buying a KA24 for it and selling it that way. It's cheap but unless you paid a really small price for the shell you wouldn't make much money. Don't buy car with salvaged titles.

I had a 00 Civic hatch. It was stolen and the wheels and radio were the only things gone when it was found. Insurance totaled it out and gave it a salvage title. Absolutely nothing was damaged. It just depends why it was salvaged.

Kicker with salvage title is no bank will loan you money for it...how many people actually got $10-15k just chilling in their bank accounts in here and buy a car cash money?

i paid 1200 for the car with a blown s15 sr20, going to end up costing me 5000 to rebuild it and push 300+ hp. So why wouldnt i keep the s15 sr?
Sileighty_85
07-31-2012, 09:43 PM
its gonna cost you 5K to rebuild an SR? and only get around 300... your doing something wrong.
xoxide
07-31-2012, 09:45 PM
^Because you can buy a S15 SR that hasn't been blown for less than 5k.

4100 to pay Zerolift to rebuild (cp pistons, scat rods, etc.) New turbo 850, 4950 almost 5 thousand dollars. Still only 6200 bucks into it, and have a bunch of spare parts for a redtop to sell so maybe 5500?

not thats fully built, and I like knowing my motor hasnt had the piss beat out of it.

Have you factored in a proper tune, etc.?
cincity240
07-31-2012, 10:01 PM
Why would I need to tune ? I'm putting the same s15 turbo on just a new one.

If I bought a car with a blown motor, and was spending 5k to rebuild it with good parts like you are, I definetly would be getting it looked over and retuned by a reputable shop just for peace of mind.
cincity240
07-31-2012, 10:04 PM
I asked about it at zerolift and they said i need a 900 dollar part to tune it then another 450 assuming it takes 3 hours.. Seems like a lot of money .
xoxide
07-31-2012, 10:06 PM
Well, Thats poor judgement in my opinion to drop 5k on a build and not spend an extra 1k to properly go over everything and eliminate the possibility of something else going wrong from having a bad tune from the prev. owner.
Sileighty_85
07-31-2012, 10:13 PM
So why spend 5 k on building an engine that is only gonna push 300 that any Stock SR can handle and that your gonna try to resell?

because i dont have the extra 3000+ dollars to push 450. but why spend 2500-3k on a s15 sr when everything i have ever heard about someone buying a motor set has been bad (things are missing or the motor was blown) id rather spend the extra 2k and know what im getting. and im not sure of exact hp numbers but i'm assuming it will be atleast 300 as thats what it was before it blew.

and when did i ever say anything about wanting to build this just to resell it? i simply asked about a salvage title affecting resale, not that im building a car to resell it. i got my answer and im not sure why this thread continued past that.
