I got pulled over the other day for speeding. The cop let me off with no ticket but he wrote me a citation for not having my insurance. I have a little book in my glovebox that has the insurance and the registration in it. I don't know why he wrote me up for not having insurance. Can anyone help me?

He also said something about going to the courthouse and showing them my insurance and paying a 9$ fee or something.

he prolly never saw the insurance.. when you go to the courthouse... you show them that little card and you dont have to pay that insane fee.. i guess it varies for each state.. but i just brought my insurance card.. and i didnt have to pay anything.

the effective date on the insurance card? ..its the date that it is valid from.. it may be that your card was outdated..and you were mailed a newer one... if its expired, youll need to find the one that isnt..

The effective date was June 3, 2002. That is when we first got it insured. Is it only valid for a year or whats the deal? My dad handles all the insurance and he would've given me the newer one if it had already expired. So whats going on here?

My card says "not valid for more than 6 months after effective date". You must have been expired. You should start taking more responsibility for yourself, and not make your parents take care of things for you.

I had the same thing happen to me, I had what I thought was the insurance card from my company when the cop asked to see my insurance. I'm under my parents name/policy so their name appeared on the card even though my car is listed on it. Cop said that's not "official" which surprised me. Its a $10 fine here in California. When I showed the clerk at traffic court my card, they said they can't accept that as a form/proof of insurance. He suggest that I just make a copy of my policy with my name/car highlighted and keep that in my glove.

I did that, and just paid the $10 fine. I know there's a lot more information on there that really shouldn't fall into the wrong hands, so I just got a big black sharpie and covered up the other cars/vin #/family members so only my information is showing.

Its total BS but whatever, its a cheap price to pay in case I were to get into an accident and for some reason a cop wouldn't accept my "card" as insurance. Suffice to say, I avoid attracting attention to myself and have real proof in my glovebox.

I do take care of myself. Just becuase my parents pay for my insurance doesnt mean i can't take care of myself. I am paying for my freakin car.

Yea, the cop didn't really tell me why my insurance card wasn't right, he just said take it to traffic court and pay $9 and show them your insurance.
