yes.
all you really need is the tach.
Not to still your thread.....well yeah to steal your thead. What about a SOHC HUD? Is it still as easy as changing the tach?

you might run into some obd-ii problems the wiring harness obd-ii conector stuff like that, I was going to swap in a 98 motor but peopel said it would take alot of work because of all the obd-ii stuff, if you find any info that regards problems about swapping 98 motor into a obd-i 240 plz post here, dont need info about the intake manifold, distributor and stuff like that need info on what it takes besides taht swapping obd-i to obd-ii

Im looking for buy a 97 motor off my friend, but i need some guidence... I need to know if i can retain all the of the emissions hardware from the 97 obd-ii motor. Because i live in cali and id like to stay legal as much as i can, i also plan to install the greddy kit if and when it becomes carb legal, again so i dont have to worry about emissions. I have a 91 240sx with stock motor and i guess im looking to swap 97 obd-ii ka motor and convert it to conform with obd-ii standards(ecu, obd-ii plug, ect...) Anyone in Cali dont the obd-ii ka swap and been able to pass smog legally?

If you are going to be Turbo Charging your Engine I would just suggest leaving that single cam in there. The compression on the single cam is alot more turbo friendly. Your 1989 KA24E has a comp ratio of 8.5:1, that 98 KA24DE has a comp ration of 9.6:1. The Single cam will get you alot more power turbo charged than the twin can will if you are using stock internals.
Just my 2 cents.

Oh and just turbo charging your KA24E, is alot less headaches.
About the OBDII questions. All you need to do is use S13 KA24DE equipment and wiring and you will be fine. I've done the swap. I used a 1998 KA24DE and used the wiring harness and equipment off of a 1992. I turbo charged it once I was done, after I lost it due to an Accident I bought another 89 and turbo charged the KA24E. I'll never go back to KA24DE. The Single cam is much more responsive once turbo charged.

LOL.. Hey there Legal Beagle... swapping a newer motor into an older chassis IS legal, as long as it conforms to the smog requirements of the newer motor. So... yes it IS legal.

I am sorry to dig up this old thread, but i really need help.
if i drop a 98 motor into my 90, then can i make it stay in OBDI mode and still legal in california?
now my situation is that my ka24e is not running so well, and my friend is giving me his low miles 98 ka24de with automatic tranny. I "think" the ka24de swap into the ka24e still requires alot time and work, so the installation cost is about as same as install a SR20DET? So at this moment i cannot decide if i want go for ka24det or sr20det. Also if i install the Greddy turbo kit (CARB for 96-98) in my 90 that equiped with 98 motor, will it still be street legal?
if you are cofusing about my question, here it is
SR20DET swap -> front clip + installation = about $4000
KA24DET swap -> Free Ka24DE + 91-94 ECU, harness, intake maniford+ Greddy turbo kit + installation = about $4000
or rebuild my 200k miles ka24e + turbo = i have no idea
oh yes one more stupid question is that do i have to get a ka24de tranny? or can i match up my ka24e tranny with ka24de?
Thanks alot

are you sure that they are all the same? i also thought the same, but after i swaped a '98 twin cam into my '90 i used my single cam tranny. anyways my friend with the same rear end in both of his twin cams seem like they have closer gears than i do. maybe my gauge cluster if off(twincam cluster), but at the same rpm in the same gear his speed is lower than mine.
correct me if im wrong but its just my two cents

they are the same.
the tachs though, whoever said that about the hud, NO!
the hud tachs are NOT the same
I had an 89 hud and I got a 93 analoh cluster and I had to swap needles and gauge faces from the hud tach onto the analog tach to get it to fit into my cluster. And swapping needles is a pain in the ass!
I strongly advise you to try and find what you have (ie, if you have hud, get a dohc hud, if you have analog, find an analog). its possible to do what I did, but why bother?
