So when i bought my 92 240sx, the owner said it had a 1.5 NISMO LSD.

They also said it had a Z32 MAF but turned out to be a regluar STock MAF.

Im getting ready to buy fluid for the DIFF and want to make sure i get the right kind of fluid. If it is a 1.5 NISMO LSD like he claims, then ima get MOTUL 90PA which is for clutch type LSD right?

The only test i did so far was to jack up the rear and turn the wheels. they both go in the same direction, meaning i have some sort of LSD right?

as long as youre not holding the input shaft and they both turn at the same speed then yeah it should be lsd. idk about clutch type though, I know this works for vlsd, I have no experience with clutch type so that only gets me so far but hopefully its a start.

your best bet is to pull the cover and look at it, if you're changing fluid then pulling the cover wont hurt.

Only way you can really verify if it is what the seller said it was is yes drop the diff, pop the rear cover off and you can see for yourself. Hopefully you have the mods in writing at the time of sale then you actually fight it and try to get some $$$ back if there is no nismo 1.5 lsd in there.

:werd:

unbolt the diff from the axles, driveshaft & subframe, drop it down (with a floor jack), then pop the cover. Might as well since your doing a oil flush anyways

Does it "Clunk" when you make sharp turns? Im not referring to tire chirp.

If the Diff clunks then you have a real LSD, But opening will tell you what kind you have.

that may also depend on what kind of diff you have though. I know what you're talking about, cuz Kaaz 2 way diffs are clunky as hell, but I've also driven cars with Nismo 1.5 ways that are super silent.

nope no clunks or noise when making turns,

Lets say i either have a VLSD or a 1.5 Nismo LSD,

would Motul 90PA work for either of em? or does the VLSD need a different kind of fluid?

nismo 1.5 shouldn't clunk around corners. they mainly lock up on deceleration. they still lock under the go but it takes a little more to lock them than the 2 way hence why they dont "clunk."

and for fluid. i used just any regular gear oil. dd'd my car and tracked it every weekend for about 2 yrs and had no problems. still got it and waiting to put it in my car. and i have a nismo 1.5

okay thanks for the info, iended up buying motul 90PA anyways not too expensive, bout 22 bucks for 2 quarts at the west covina Nissan. LOL i like how they sell sr20 turbos and megan coilovers

so how do u tell the differance between LSD and Welded?

is it just noise and tire chirping?

This is what you have to do, because your asking this question!
Drop the differential and open it up, look inside, then take pictures (because you don't know what you're looking at), post them in this thread.

You bought the car with a z32 mafs and you later realized it was a stock mafs. You got beat on something you could have verified on the spot, You definitely got beat on the LSD!

im not very mechanically skilled, but i will be takin it to a shop today so well let you guys know, and as for the MAF, this would be my first 240 let alone nissan, so just assumed it was *facepalm* LOl, but its all good, running a N60 which is more than enuff for my 5lbs of boost :)

Do a burn out and see if you have two strip of tires mark...

yess! agreed^ haha one of the easiest ways to check if your diff is open or if you have some type of lsd

if he burns out it will only tell him if it's some sort of posse or open. open the diff cover and if it's welded you will know it right away. if it's not welded and it is a nismo it will have nismo stamped somewhere. just clean up the diff and gears and spin until you see something. and he could have some sort of diff and burn out with one wheel peel if his clutches are bad.

Wrong...........I still have open diff, I can dump the clutch from stop and leave 2 nice long black marks, I can dump it 2nd gear, 40mph in a straight line and still leave 2 marks. If I turn a corner and dump it only 1 tire spins.

turn a corner and do a burnout then...lol

1.5 way will clunk on accel and not decel, 2 way will clunk on accel and decel, if you turn your wheels, dump the clutch on a straight line and both tires spin but only a 1 wheel spin when your turning the wheels and dumped the clutch then you have a VLSD

sorry to tell you this, VLSD also have a life span of approx 150K before they start slipping depending on the beating they get

^ wrong a 1-way will clunk on accel and vlsd will lock up around a corner unless i'm totally kick ass at drifting a 1 wheel peal.

Frankyy
07-27-2012, 03:51 PM
1 way?!

and VLSD will always break loose around a corner, unless you start spinning before you enter the corner depending on the angle of your wheels also, and it is still fairly easy to drift a VLSD around a corner with narrow tires

yes 1-way = accel, 1.5-way = decel, and 2-way both.

If you have a VLSD any gear fluid will work, the viscous fluid is encased in the VLSD.

Best thing to do if you are changing the fluid anyways is to drop it and just pop the back off and take a peek. Not too tough to do, just kinda heavy so use a jack to lowe it down. Have fun!

yes 1-way = accel, 1.5-way = decel, and 2-way both.

wrong a 1.5-way locks on accel and only a bit on decel js

godsmack

^ I said it locks on accel but it's main race application is for decel. if you use it for drifting it stays locked for you while you're off the throttle where as the 1 way will actually unlock until you hit the throttle again.
