I am currently in the navy right now. I've been in for over a year. currently stationed in san diego. really does what u get on your asvab and what's available and what u qualify for first. don't rush yourself into it and don't let them rush u into anything.

Dont know much about the translate thing but heres some pointers for bootcamp.

Bootcamp is a breeze, dont worry. When you get to bootcamp you will go thru P days, which is the first week you are there and its also an extra week you are unaccounted for there and its all about you getting processed into the navy, Whatever information you give your recruiter and anyone at MEPS, make sure you dont give any hidden info later on any paticular event. they go kind of haywire if its anything contradictive, believe me i know.

The obvious and most said, dont volunteer much in camp and dont try to be the teachers pet. Its gets you nowhere and nothing but responsibility that you backfire when the division does something wrong.

My division was a split one, Half dudes and and half girls. Our bunks were across the hall from each other, Most of them look like zombies but after a couple of weeks they look alot different and you start to question your standards, DONT GIVE IN TO THIS because by the time this happens, bootcamp is nearing the end and you will get liberty and beable to go downtown chicago and get a room. if your good then pull a hottie from the bar or random alley way.

Dont put shaving cream in others shoes

dont particapate in sexual activities with other dudes there.

KNOW YOUR SAILERS CREED...if anything, just memorize this otherwise once your there and you dont know it then your going to be yelled at alot.

Wipe your ass good because the whitey tighties will show that you didnt and everyone in your division sees it when laundry is past out and your undies has your name all over it.

Dont cry.

Do all this and that should get you on the right path.

If you're seriously considering the medical field in the Navy then I can give you a lot of insight into what really goes on.

I was a Navy Corpsman for 5 years of which I spent majority of it deployed with the Marine Corps as their doc.

I was EMT basic, PHTLS, PALS, BLS, CPR qual'ed, ACLS, and Fleet Marine Force qual'ed.

Lots of fun was had and lots of shitty times as well.

Get a good score on your ASVAB. I know alot of navy sailors that had gotten out didnt use their prior job in the navy outside the civilian world. The navy brings out the best in you and try to get in the right route in your life. I have been in for 10 yrs. This is the list of my previous jobs to current:
1. Undesignated airman (2002 - 2004)
2. Corpsman / pharmacy tech NEC 0000, 8404, 8482 (2005 - 2009)
3. Current job. FMF HM 8427. I will be going officer as a nurse hopefully next year.

TorpedoMan Second Class (Submarines) at your service. Ive been in for 8 years. Out of the 3 i would say i would least want to be a Master At Arms ('naval police officer.') advancement is really hard and ive heard from a lot of MA2s that they might be getting 'let go.' the navy has this 'new thing' called Perform To Serve, where you have to be APPROVED for them to let you stay in, as opposed to just serving as much as you want. Also, MA's hours arent that great. it all depends on where you are of course but a lot of em at the subase's have told me how their hours are like 12-16 on. as opposed to a normal work day where you come in around 6-8 and go home around 2-4 (again, depends where you are.) plus the job is very monotonous, very boring and repetitive.

as for corpsman, i HEAR its hard for them to make rank as well but they are needed everywhere. but it looks like you got 2 corpsman right here that could provide you more info with that.

as for ATC, idk shit about anything air... lol

thanks for the feedback guys , im just looking for a solid job i can do in the navy and once im out. but i might just do my 20 years and retire through the navy.

my only worry is job secruity, everything else is a bonus.

is there any PRE-requierments you need to get a job in the medical field?

there's a medical field topic somewhere floating around.

i know a little...

what they look for is a BSN is the standards (maybe the still take a fresh AS, but i dont know where). now, they are upping the standards to msn. pass the license exam and get a cert.

lpn or lvn is the fastest to get your foot in but...mostly Vacational nursing jobs with lower pay if you find a hospital that are still taking lpn. still got to work the pre req atleast 2 or more years. be flexable to relocate available openings. and connections helps a ton.

I was advise just to go thru bsn than lpn.

I'm in the AF but I came in as ATC. ATC has 2 sides, Radar or Tower. No clue how the Navy does their training but AF side, they'll teach you a bit of both but half way thru the course, they'll focus you on one a specific side. Tower is cake, radar is harder.

But if you're serious about ATC...Go AF.

HAHA, nah. I thought about it 12 yrs ago. But the whole 6 months on shore and 6 months in a boat kinda killed it for me. I was living close to SD and alot of my friends were Navy or Corps. All them told me to go AF.

The same asshole friends I had sent me a package of a blow up doll and gay porn in basic. That did not go well with my TI.

i was leaning on the Navy cause it seemed like they get to travel to alot more diffrent ports,

but if i go either AF or USN wont i get the same certification upon completion for ATC??

I'm currently in as an AD(Aviation Machinist Mate) about to hit my 7 year mark. Don't let the name fool you I just work on powerplant and fuel systems for aircraft. I would not recommend my job or AM as they are both overmanned and they just got done cutting a bunch of people out of my rate. If I could do it again I would go SpecWar, Aircrew(Dry or Wet), Corpsman, or something to do with Intelligence i.e. IT or IS. Try to stay away from those boat specific jobs like CS, AB, BM, HT as they are likely some of the worst jobs I can think of. DO NOT GO UNDESIGNATED ANYTHING!!!! Make sure you do good on your asvab, I recommend the ASVAB for dummies you can get at any local barnes and noble. I've had good times and bad times in the Navy, currently at MCAS Miramar as a Sailor and I would definitely not recommend the Marines. They have a lot of good people(also some bad) and all but you have no freedom compared to the AF/Navy.

alright thanks for the heads up, what are specwar and aircrew are all about ?

Specwar is Special Warfare I.E. SEALS/SWCC/EOD/DIVER(IIRC) They are most of the jobs you see on the commercials. All the cool toys/guns/gadgets/gizmos they will have first. Aircrew is the crew that flies onboard certain aircraft, you have anything from rescue swimmers(helicopters)/load masters/door gunners/Etc.

As cool as those jobs are you do want to make the Navy work for you at the same time. If you can find a job that you enjoy that you can use after you get out, that helps out even more.

07-06-2012, 04:50 PM
yea, im really trying to see what jobs i can use outside the navy, what about retiring through the navy? is the reitrment really all that good through them?

fliprayzin240sx
07-06-2012, 05:10 PM
Retirements the same across the forces for the most part. Do your 20 years and get 50% of what you've been making the last 3 years. So the higher rank you get, more retirement pay.

I've been to some pretty cool places myself, places I know I'd likely never go as a civilian. My list of foreign places is Malta, Greece, Dubai, Bahrain, Turkey, Israel, Somalia(well, the coast) and Spain in no specific order. I've also been to several places in the states that I'd never thought I'd go as well including Florida(Ft. Lauderdale), Virginia(Va Beach/Norfolk), Illinois(Great Lakes, and Currently in San Diego. Mind you that's not how it always is and some people have better/worse experiences.

I'd say shitty stuff is heat on the flight deck in the Persian Gulf, almost getting thrown off the side of an LHD from a CH53's rotor wash, aircraft wash job's in the Atlantic Ocean during winter time, and loss of internet/email for a month lol

..pussy

...............................

Call it what you want but if I'm getting paid the same I'd rather deal with less bullshit and not have to have a high and tight thank you very much ;)

How very Navy of you! Haha. Trained with the dudes going to go SEAL right after Bootcamp. Shit was fun, probably the only thing, other than medic, that'd I'd do in the Navy.

I went Army, because the Air Force was being too lazy to look at my ASVAB and because I walked into the Army's office and said "I want 35M, heres my ASVAB" and they replied "Please sign here."

^^ ok, dude to ensure you go into the Navy as an E-3 you need to take your (PFA) physical fitness Assessment, and drill. If you do that and your recruiter is not a dumb ass, you should enter boot camp as a Seaman which is a E-3. Thats the highest rank you can enter the Navy!

I believe there is also some test you're supposed to take within a few days of arriving to bootcamp, my friends wife just graduated and she said several people were supposed to get that but somebody fudged paperwork along the way. I know when I enlisted they would give you e-2 if you were able to get someone to join with you, however I had no such luck.

TougeLove
07-10-2012, 12:33 AM
you have to be careful about being E-3 before bootcamp or being E-3 once you complete boot camp.

I did rescue swimmer and did the "test" right before leaving. I was promoted to e-2 and then after completing bootcamp and aircrew school they said I would be E-3 but I just got E-2 again, which really didnt mean shit. lol I finished rescue swimmer school and was sent to be a helicopter tech (which i never went to school for) They ended up messing up all my documentation and I took an honorable separation and some benefits with me. never looked back :) now i get to watch them fly by while im on the beach haha :D

I know you hear it a lot but GET IT IN WRITING!

i got a ticket right before i left and the recruiter said they navy would take care of it since i would be out of state when i was due in court. I came back and 2 years later I had a failure to pay and failure to appear and a 800 ticket that was 100. I didnt even think to make sure i got the agreement in writing.

anyone have any ifo reguarding joing the navy with 2 misdemeanors? am i fucked or can the wavier actually go through ?

You'll get a 'waiver' if your truthfull with everything before and after you join! Keep copies of everything seeing this may shadow you for the first two years.

Get an information rating! Depends on your ASVAB as many has mention. Information posted so far is accurate to some extent, and always varies from enlistment date/year.

<----IT2 (IDW/SW) 8 years, 4 ships, 5 commands, 1 IA, 19 countries, still active duty!

Sound kick ass!

Not Anymore, the NAVY/military has changed so much since I enlisted. Use to be a place for a young person to grow/learn. Now it's no more different than working at walmart, just better benefits. No one cares anymore

^^^Dont forget doing more with less. Less people, less money with more work, longer hours and more deployments. Thank God we're out of Iraq, didnt wanna end up spending another Christmas in Balad and getting mortared on Christmas eve.

As far as all the baggage you have coming into the military, hope you can keep your nose clean. If you've made shitty decisions while you were out, don't do it when you get in. Getting dishonorably discharge is a shitty way to go.

They can get you in if you really want to be in. Waivers can cover just about anything. But I went into bootcamp as an e-2, they say everyone is a e1 until you graduate just as a mental equality thing. When the les's were handed out halfway through I was receiving my e-2 pay.

dawagarage

you COULD get a waiver for almost any and everything, but this is the 'new' navy, we're 'downsizing' to save money. so we are denying a lot of people while at the same time having our choice picks of who we want it. but then again recruiters have quotas...
