View Full Version : kyokugen lugnuts suck! please help
i havent taken mine out in a year, and when i finally tried to take them out the other day, the key stripped....so then i found on other forums that if i dont care if i break the lug nuts, i can use a 15mm 12-pt socket, and hammer it in to loosen it..still didnt work.(well, a few of the lugnuts i got, some stripped, some i didnt even try yet
the thing that sucks, every time i hammer the 15mm socket on there, i have to bang out the lugnut inside the socket....
what options do I have> any suggestions? :(

He's talking about the lugnut thread. Honda run 1.25 pitch, and we're 1.50 pitch. I think you have the wrong ones, too. Or maybe someone overtightened them.

hahahahhahahhahaha
hurleyboi meant the right thread pitch -- Nissans/Subies are 12*1.25 while Mazda/Toyota/Honda are 12*1.5 thread pitch... LOL
BTW hurleyboi, Dousan and I also agree that Kyokugen lugnuts suck seven-sided elephant nuts. He's gone through at least 2 keys and I'm about to kill my first key. They're simply not machined to a close/good enough specification to see heavy/frequent use.
Do keep in mind that we do change wheels every other day (note the exaggeration) so the lugnuts see a LOT of use.
edit: darn, jeff beat me to it. BTW I'm 99% sure Nissan are 1.25 while honda etc are 1.5. :d I think it's unlikely that he go the wrong thread pitch, assuming he's taken them off and put them on in the past with no problems.

I might have mixed those up. Lemme go check my lugnut box :-/

according to the packaging on the wheel locks that I got a couple weeks ago, and have since removed and put back on several times, 1.25 would be the correct lugnut thread pitch,

-JeffAww don't be sad just because I'm better than you... :wtc:
:p j/k!!!! I just happened to have bought a set of kyokugens recently, which is why this is still fresh in my head. :) "Payce!"
edit: What Dirty D said... thing is, after you buy 5 Kyokugen keys, you could easily afford some nice GREX, 5Zigen or possibly even a used set of RAYS lugnuts!!

yah thats what i meant... :) mine work great, $50 shipped, 4 spare lugs.... i change wheels only when i get new tires for the street wheels, and when i autox, i put on my race wheels. so they work fine for me! :)

goto sears and buy their nut removal kit. pretty much its a stronger metal and it will bite in your current lugnut, and then you can turn it.

just wondering for those who keep messing up their kyokugen keys, how tight do u torque down your lugnuts? I've been using mine for over a year and have changed my wheels about 30+ times during that time and everything seems OK. ALso, what part of the key gets fucked up? The area that makes contact with the lug nut or the part of the key where you stick the 21mm socket in?
I torque my stuff down to something in the region of 110 to 120nm... I think that's just over 80ft/lb? Possibly closer to 90ft/lb? Recommended is between I think 108 and 118 nm (off the top of my head). I'm not particularly hard on my nuts either (har!), I try to take as good care of them as possible (naturally, eh?). :p
It's the nut side -- the 7-sidedness means the angle of each contact point is larger (smaller), resulting in easier slippage and/or warpage. If they had used a pentagonal design (or just machined the keys to higher tolerences), it would probably work much better.

Here's an idea! Someone contract a machine company to make their own lugnuts, or at least keys.

er...why? there are so many lug nut choices that are relatively inexpensive

i'm on my 2nd key now.. if i wasn't going to japan so soon, i'd probably keep a 3rd spare or just buy some mcgards or gorillas.

where do u guys get backup keys?
i can just buy the key without buying a whole new set?
damn...i found this emergency lugnut removal tool, but you're suppose to use an impact gun with it.
also, i know its the correct thread. i made sure of it before i bought it.

where can I get gorilla lug nuts?
I have some kyokugen...and the only problem I had was rust building up in the rear lugnuts....I have the open end lugnuts.

any dealer that stocks the nuts can order you a new key. they're ~$15, iirc.

I had a set before and stripped 2 keys. After I took them off they went straight to where they belong – garbage.

i only started having a problem after my friend lost my key cuz i let him borrow it, cuz he lost his, then once i got it back cuz he bought a new one, thats when my problem started, he loved to over torque his lugs, and i think it screwed up the key,
