View Full Version : Too much fuel? What to do?

Took apart my sr this winter got everything back together, when I try to start it, it cranks and cranks and all you smell is fuel and there's no leaks. If you unplug the injector plugs and try to start it, it cranks and kinda starts and idles for like a second and dies, plug the injectors back in and try it, it idles for like .2 of a second then will only crank.
Pulled the brand new plugs out they're black and covered with fuel. Tried raising the gap from .28 to .35 and the same thing. I'm running a walbro 255, 555cc injectors and a stock fpr. It ran fine before pulling the engine maybe a little rich but never had any problems.
All I can think of is before I pulled the engine I was using a lawnmower battery which made the car crank slow, so maybe it wasn't giving the fuel pump it's full power and now that I'm using a high powered miata battery that it's at full power and pumping out too much fuel because I'm only using the stock regulator.
Does that sound like it might be it?
Is there any other option besides buying a fpr?

what tuning setup are you using

i don't think the battery would be the cause. The only thing i can think of is you might have a leaking injector. I would aslo check to make sure you are getting spark in all cylinders.

yea you defintely need a fpr i have a aeromotive works great i have mine set at the minimum which i believe is 38 psi

A walbro 255 is an upgraded fuel pump that pumps out 255/lph. Not too sure on the tune I just know it's a "rom tune". Hmm that's what I was thinking it would be just seems kinda weird it ran fine before no worries and now it doesn't. Do I need to find an adjustable fpr for an sr20 or can I find one for something else that will fit, really don't want to order something online and wait 2 weeks for shipping to canada.
Edit: Sorry irving thought you were asking what a walbro 255 is. Didn't see that I put 355.

Doing a little searching and people were saying they run walbros with the stock fpr just fine they only run rich which I know it was before. Could it means my stock fpr is dead and not holding back any pressure? Is there anything else it could be?

The same thing happened to me. I put a walbro in without a fpr and flooded the cylinders. I put the stock pump back in since I didn't have a fpr and cranked the engine without the fuel pump fuse to burn off the excess gas. I also replaced the spark plugs to make sure it would fire.

yeah i really think its fpr, can u find any locals with a FPR, there are so many different ones out there u might be able to get one local

I hope it's only that would definitely be happy even double checked the timing last night by taking the valve cover off and it looks good so I hope a stock replacement would to me good. Thanks guys.

before you do anything crazy - pull the injectors again and check them carefully for ripped/torn/gashed o-rings. any of these will flood a cylinder(s) instantly.

Wow did not know that. I'll check that asap.

yes and when you reinstall them, lube them up good. auto trans fluid/engine oil is excellent to lube them with. it washes out and still helps to seal the 0-rings.

Damn checked them and they're all looking good. If it's not the fpr what would my next step be to check?

Haha I can't even get the car running!

Try again with a real battery. Your lawnmower battery is unlikely to have the power needed and may catch fire.
As for the FPR, i think it really is an urban legend. It only happens on US forums ! Everywhere else in the world we are using walbros without changing the FPR, and it works very well.

lolwhat?!
I've been using a lawnmower battery for 2 years now... haha

True.
I had a stock single cam with a walbro. fuel pressure didn't change.
But if his FPR died. It would lower his psi, therefore giving him LESS fuel, Not more....
Did you pull the rail with all the injectors in and then turn the car on to prime it? It could be leaking that way.
You also could have an injector getting stuck open.

I said I used to have a lawnmower battery but now have a miata one. I'm thinking maybe if the fpr died for whatever reason that it's not holding any pressure back therefore dumping too much fuel. Buying one tonight for $20 to see if that will do the trick I'm praying it does.

I don't see how at full working battery going give too much fuel to the vehicle. Your fuel pump might be pulling too much fuel..

Well fuck a different fuel pressure regulator didn't solve the problem still the same thing. I'm thinking it's either getting too much fuel or not getting good spark. Doesn't make sense though how it started and ran perfect before pulling the engine and now something isn't working properly?

What you saying that the car wouldn't run right now??

what kinda of ROM tune is it? i had the same problem with my pfc...it wound up needing timing adjustments. after that..car idled and ran just fine!

check your timing.
You say you took it apart and now it doesn't run, check your mechanical & CAS timing again to make sure.

Hello every one he's running a 550cc injector on a stock ECU if I'm not mistaking. buddy your injector give 100% of the 550cc fule to the engin that's too much. You need to have it tuned Or to get a Power FC from there go to injector you will see 100% drap that to 65%.
If u don't want to spend any more money take them off and have your stock one back 370cc.
