Recently sent my turbo to Turbos Direct in TX. They had their techs open the turbo up to inspect it. The guy calls me and tells me the turbos getting too hot and he said to get it better cooled or it wont last another 1500 miles.

I daily the car but not far and rarely push the car but when I do I really push it.

Here's my routine:
Start up
Warm it up til operating temp (via oe water temp gauge)
Wait til oil press drops to <60psi
Shut down
Drive out of boost for a few mins
Turbo time for minimal 1-2mins Hard drives 2-4mins

Setup:
93 s13 ka
Garrett T3 GT35R Top mounted

Water cooled (lines running from throttle body)

Oil:
Skulls and bones Oil block -->
-3an ssline -->
Earls -4an inline oil filter -->
Turbo -->
-10an drain

Ebay -8an oil cooler (not sure the size)
Trust GREX oil filter relocation block w/ thermostat
-8 oil lines

Koyo radiator
Stock clutch fan w/ shroud

Down pipe wrapped
Turbo blanket

Soon to install a nismo thermostat - water and oil temp gauges.

Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated

EGT's Might be to high.

Engine is running lean possibly

Yup. Check your air/fuel ratios. Probably running lean like Sil said.

Imho not a problem of water / oil cooling, but more something to do with poor / no mapping, too small injectors and too small AFM. I hope you are not running a boosted engine with stock fuel system, air metering and oem tune, otherwise you sure are making holes in your pistons ...

As always, do things right. Slapping a turbo on an NA engine and hoping it will work is not the right way.

You want to keep the turbo hot, that's why you insulate the turbo. I believe they run best at 1500 degrees f.

Also, warming your car up is no good.

Wait maybe 5 seconds or so to build oil pressure, then keep revs low till it warms up.

Don't have a water or oil temp gauge yet. but i will soon

AFR is 14-15 @ cruising 11-12 @ WOT idles @ 14.7-15

Car would have blew the motor already. I'm running
750cc injectors
greddy fuel rail
walbro 255
tomei fpr
tune is from efi specialist for my setup.
I also have a knock light which has only come on once with mild knock at 3rd gear @ 6.5k

I know this already. Hot air moves faster. But guys at turbos direct is saying it is getting too hot. That the insides are cooking.

And my car cold starts with over 130 psi. Is that really safe to drive on?

if you can get an EGT sensor, try to install it ... but i cant see what you can do to cool it down, unless you use lower boost and a less aggressive ignition map :/

Take off the turbo blanket then?

I'm running 9.6lb spring. and I'm thinking about removing the blanket but it is really close to the bmc.

I can't remember who makes the shields for the bmc. But they work pretty darn well. Only reason I can think of on why the turbo is getting too hot is because of the internals are cheap. That's not like Garret either.

Megan Racing. You can get one on frsport.com.

What exactly is, 'getting too hot'?

What has accelerated wear to the turbo which makes the shop believe it is due to overheating?

I highly doubt your turbo is getting hot enough to glow like this.

As said before, running too lean will cause danger to t3h manifold.

sounds like the shop is full of shit and looking for an out if they actually repaired anything......

I use a circuit sport heat sheild it's pretty nice but still gets hot.

I found it weird too. they said the turbos all black and blue inside. which points to over heating. I thought turbos were suppose to see high heats like that.

Sometimes I think so too. They are a big shop though and authorized by garrett.

I'm going to hook up a safc to fine tune the efi specialist tune.

What size exhaust? Do you have a cat?

It really kills me when mechanics at shops don't know their shit or either their trying to get over you. Similar to what kik said....
