I found what i think is a pretty good deal on an 86 corolla GTS hatch. The car has 155K on it with a clean title, the body is decent(minor dings) with faded paint, the frame is straight, and the driver's side door is white(replaced). It has an ae92 hood scoop and possibly the CLEANEST gts interior i've ever seen. It has supra wheels, new tires, less than 3K on the clutch and the engine bay is spotless.Only other mods are shocks and springs, also pretty new. the car needs a new headgasket which will cost me ~200 bucks to do. the owner is asking 600 bucks for it. Buy it or no?

sounds like a good price....you should get it carfaxed for a buck from chineseboi.....$800 bucks total, and the headgasket might not be the only thing wrong with it.....when you can't test drive a car alot of shit can be bad(take a look at the posts from this girl named reille...)

hmm from what i've heard they are pretty hard to keep running when u first get them. owners spend maybe $200 a month on basic repairs for a while before the car is really up to speed. although that's expected as its so damn old... i say go for it. even if u don't like it u can sell it to some initial D wannabe for a lot more money ;)

btw, even if the engine is scrap $600 is still a great price for a '86 shell.

Go for it..thats a great deal.....A very rare car........and the only real problems are body dings, a different colored door (none of this really matters)...and a head gasket..!!!!!!!!!!!! 600!!!!!!...get it please....If you dont then i officially think you suck...cuz i would kill for a deal like that

If you are in a serious budget. Then I wouldn't even suggest the AE86 for you.

At the very end, You will be spending more than you can think of.

Shocks, Bushings, Minors things to the motor such us radiator (#1 disease on the 86), waterpump, belts etc... Those ar minors IMO. If you are going to completely drift the car then you better have fat wallets.

im not gonna drift it..im gonna use it for daily driving/ driving through the mountains on weekends..and driving to tapioca express. lol.
and i'm not on a serious budget..i guess if i really wanted too i could blow a lotta lotta money on my car.

i'll drift my s13 once jspec stocks the damn lsd.

i think the only mods i'll do to it is a steering wheel and myabe bushings. o and a paintjob, wheels spacers, better lsd,o shit i'm going broke just thinking about it.

I wouldn't buy it....unless your ready to have two cars. You may find out that buying it at that price sounds nice, but keeping it maintained is not so nice.

Yeah man... I've been looking for one to toss around... but I'm wondering... why do you need LSD to drift? I'm still learning... but I started on an open diff... same shit... just harder to get going in the other direction.

If you don't get it... I'd gladly pick it up from the guy.

if you're mechanically inclined (which you should be) go for it.

Thats a steal on that 86! I bought my sr5 shell for 50bucks, and paid 700 for everything to swap to full 42k mile gts. The cars are built very nicely and really easy to work on, i know because ive taken them completely apart (every single removable part) and put them back together, ive done this with 2 86's. I would buy that in a second if the body had never been seriously smashed, and if it had no rust.

having more than one car does get expensive, i have 2 240s, an 86, and a 91 series 5 rx7. progress is much slower with more cars

Then definitely invest your money tearing those old suspension.

Bushings especially.

Shocks - Depends on what shocks you are looking into. Such us for drift, Grip, Auto X, etc... It took me a year to firgure out what I needed for my driving availability. I spent shitload of money to for stupid things which was not needed.

As for Springs, You can usually go for cheap-o GC which will work. The only thing is searching for the right rates. Took me 12 diff springs, changing them each event which work best for my car, drifting, gripping and daily driven.

Wheels are factor for 86 IMO. I guess about everything. It just don't cut it... When people say "Ill just buy springs and shocks".

Its not easy tuning the AE86.

there's some wierdness going on....i thought all ae86 should read JT2AE86 as the first numbers of the VIN. I just got the VIN for the one i want to buy and it reads JT2AE88. what the hell is going on? i'll post on club4ag too just in case nobody here knows wassup. The pink slip reads 1986 toyota and i've seen the car, it's an 86 for sure.

For $600, you can't go wrong (clean title ofcourse).

The Vin that reads "86" is an SR5.

The Vin should read "88" if its a GTS. You can always check the engine, rear end etc...

Those things run forever, this guy at my moms work had one and drove it til the frame was haggard, and the engine blew at 295K lol. This guy didn't maintain it at all or else I was gonna try to snap it up oh well. I say get it for another project or pass the details onto someone who is interested. Good luck regardless.
