View Full Version : SXDS15 -Lets try go pretty fast n stuff and keep it street registered. .
We figured it was time I brought those interested up to date on the car. I know I promised a while ago to put pictures up. Here they are. =)
As many of you know the car has served nfi pretty well but he'd decided it was time to create something a bit more hardcore that was lighter, had more grip, looks the part and is much more rewarding to drive. Its still going to be registered and fully engineered... In fact it already is http://www.nissansportscarclub.org/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif So its a bit of an all rounder at the moment but I guess pretty much directed at the track.
Figure we'll let the pictures do the talking since thats what everyone wants to see.

This sound deadening was the worst job to remove. On s13-s14 they use a sound deadener that is easily removed with dry ice simply cracking off. The stuff in the s15 was really bad... dry ice barely helped, you it left a dirty residue that was stuck to the floor and was really hard to get off.

The big job started.......... I reckon removing the sound deadening and getting to the clean pics you see later on took 3 people on average working on it at any point in time about 70-80 hours all up. The SXD180 we did recently by comparison would have been lucky to have taken 15-20 to completely finish.

Love your builds dude, keep it up!
Great start to the build, beautiful car to boot. What are the overall intentions with this build?
This car is has been built as a weekend street car (lots of twisty roads around Sydney) and for club motorsport. We competed it in WTAC Open class (World time attack challenge) last year and its being rebuilt again this year with lots of upgrades for this years event. I suppose the overall end goal is to build quick cars that are a shitload of fun to drive! Also having fun hanging out with our mates at the same time... =)
We're mostly S chassis or nissan lifetime owners and plan to own our cars until we cant drive them hard anymore (and there is no point in owning them).
Thanks for the supportive comments guys, like us on facebook for some more updates surrounding WTAC and general other stuff to do with the builds! A tonne more stuff of the build coming soon on here too! =)
Some shots of chassis work, there was a lot of little things done but James is abit cagey about them. =)

The next task was painting the interior. The perfectionists involved got a little out of control and the interior was not far off being a bare metal respray.

Whats the point of the spot welds in the interior?
Whats the point of the spot welds in the interior?
The same as spot welds anywhere man, chassis rigidity. Some of those are not welds from the interior either they're marks made from welding the other side.

You guys sure work quick!
Some of this is old material just have to take the time and go through it all looking for the good photos and writeup a bit about it. Besides half the fun of a build thread is waiting to see whats next right?? :)
Once we catch up to where the car is now it'll be a bit easier for me cause I'd do updates withing a week or so of the work having happened so its fresh in my mind! =) To give you an idea though I've been working on my build from the beginning of August 2011 though and its been getting at least 20 hours a week if not more. So if things seem like they're moving fast thats why :P
So the car ended up getting painted afew weeks later. We ended up doing Clear over base (COB) that is more time consuming and difficult to do but gets a better, deeper finish. The car ended up getting 6 coats of base coat and then 3 coats of clear. The paint is extremely white in the sun. Nobody could look at the car the glare was so bad. The finish came out really well and the extra effort put into prep shows. James Snell will also be painting the SXD180 (My car).

The top stage boot lid had arrived the week before as well. It came in very light at under 3kg if you look closely you can see the top stage logo in the mould which was a bit disappointing given the great expense of the item.

Thanks mate, having too much fun not too! :)
Some of my happy snaps the car looked amazing in daylight. The engine bay had quite a bit of work put into it to clean it all up. Looks miles better than it did before but still needs and engine out respray and new bits. This was planned for later on though so not much time wasted on this now.

In all of these shots the car had yet to be cut and buffed which added a much nicer finish again.
More soon!
The car finally got cut and buffed. Also the bonnet arrived from Japan. I reckon it looks mega tough and its also very functional so far as removing heat but there is an issue with getting water on the coils cause the vents go so far back. We'll have to run some sort of coil pack cover on the street.

It's looking great! I've got a soft spot for Vertex kits ;)
So shortly after this nfi jumped on the bandwagon with WTAC and forked out for his entry fee. The car had already done a 107 at Wakefield with nfi at the helm prior to the large increase in track and rubber. Eastern Creek being the track it is though there are alot of easy seconds to be had with more hp. Funding would not permit for a total overhaul of the little SR so our choices were pretty limited to something reasonably sensible. We measured up the trailer and the car and realise there was no way in hell it was going to fit with the extra phatness so some "Modifying" had to occur.

3071 T3 external gate with vband rear housing arrived for the car along with a 6boost manifold to match with the black high temp coating on it. The end goal was to run this with E85 and decent boost with the stock internals + large cams. The end power goal was around the 280-300rwkw mark.

is there a benifit of the flange being oval?
is there a benifit of the flange being oval?
This is 6boosts design the theory behind it is the velocity of the gas heading through a smaller area is increased and spools the turbo quicker. Given the results we had I tend to agree it works.
Our 3071 ended up having better response and less lag and made substantially more power than the 2871 we pulled off which is obviously a smaller turbo.
Jacked up to pull the old turbo setup off and make some changes for the new setup.

Some shots of things coming together in the weeks leading up to WTAC last year.
Unfortunately everything was so rushed we didn't get as many pictures as we'd have liked.
Fancy external gate stainless vband 3" dump pipe which was made up by Andrew, worked a treat!

That must be one of the nicest custom exhausts I've seen on here. Almost looks like a buddy club spec 2. I wanna hear a sound clip :)
It was the lightest most simplistic and straight design we could fit. It'll put up a youtube clip of it shortly it sounded pretty average at low rpm though!
The refreshed bilstein coilovers arrived back from Jono looking very serious. These now have adjustment on them unfortunately not independently but that was simply out of our budget for now.
The 3071 with fitting attached ready for its new home.

This is a shot of the wiring loom that runs through the engine bay on the turbo side. This is what brought James prior trackday to a screeching halt. A turbo gasket leak cooked it at an eastern creek trackday. The first James new of it was the windscreen wipers came on by themselves mid lap! Thankfully stuff had only melted not caught alight.

If this is a street car then why did you make a straight pipe exhaust for it?

For WTAC, it got a normal hotdog muffler later on before it got road driven regularly.

beautiful car, keep the updates coming.
This was a shot at the end of our first proper shakedown after the event. (a bmw track day from memory) had issues with the vacum fitting on the tial gate falling off and running unlimited boost. Fortunatly the stock bottom end survived unscathed.

Some pictures from the Saturday of WTAC2011. This was a seriously fun event to be a part of and the car and nfi both performed well. We were very happy with our best time of 1:39.6 on a set of Hankook TDZ221 with 260rwkw on pump. We were hoping for some more power and E85 but time and funding ran out. Car made it though the event unscathed and we had an overall whirl wind of a week and weekend. One of the highlights of the event was the Thursday evening. Meeting Susuki san and having a broken English and even more broken Japanese conversation about S15's and sharing a beer. He was very humble and just seemed happy to be there competing (even though he'd smashed his box for the first time that day).

So after this the car sat in a garage for many months. Know one really wanted to work on it for awhile as it had consumed so much time in the lead up to WTAC that we were all abit over it. My build was starting to consume alot of time and it finally got some much needed attention from everyone.
After afew months the exhaust was fixed up into a streetable version with a new rear muffler and the car was weekend driven for several months. We had some big plans for the car power wise but needed time to let funding recover and organise things. The next event we attended was the annual NSCC Wakefield day at Goulburn.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SXDS15-1.jpg
James managed a 104.07 on the day which we were happy with but not ecstatic about on one of the sets of used tyres from superlap. Andrew drove the car for some testing laps and managed a mid 106 in it.
SX Developments/Hankook Time Attack S15 Wakefield 2012 104.07 - YouTube (http://youtu.be/Fklr6Zpq8lw)
There was still more time in it though it was just a matter of getting back out there but we wouldn't have time for this as several months of solid work lay ahead to get the car prepared for this years WTAC.

Sooooo with very little time of several months and the fact we all have full time jobs an epic project was embarked on. To completely strip the car from the back of the doors forwards, rewire the full car, new engine, new cooling setup and hopefully revised aero along with a mass of "other" chassis work. Getting the motor out itself is only half the job. Lots of time was spent completely stripping the entire engine bay. Big thanks to Jimmy and Luke for making short work out of it. As you can see the engine bay was in need of some attention as it looked like shit in comparison to the rest of the car. Everything was so filthy you didnt want to touch anything let alone work in there for hours.

The three day slave fest 4000 was started the following weekend with James, Jimmy and to a lesser extent myself put in the hard yards. We had to get the car to the panel shop on a trailer, off the trailer with no front wheels or even subframe. (the worlds most epic wheel barrow). Bogged up, sanded back, highfilled, sanded back, painted, baked and back on a trailer in 2.5 days. This shot was taken at 3am on a Friday night. This shed looks so awesome I'd love to come back and shoot my car there once its completed.

So the rest of the weekend was had slaving away and taking the piss out of one another. We also visited the worlds most expensive chicken shop for lunch which left bugger all change from $50 to feed three people with shitty salad. lol
The car almost ready for highfill.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8526.jpg
Was a mamoth effort to get it up into the booth with only three of us and a shitty rolling computer chair. Which managed to take the entire weight of the front end (with nothing in it) how the legs didnt snap off it I'll never know.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8542-1.jpg

Was nice and warm in the booth so we took extra time to let the chassis warm up before Jimmy worked his magic.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8554.jpg
Sunday morning the car was in highfill with the misted black spray over the top. So the high/low points are visible when wet sanding it back. This was probably the most pain staking part of the whole thing. Took three of us the majority of the day to get this properly done.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8557.jpg
Note some of the holes in the firewall (aircon) are not there anymore, looks alot neater without them.

This side was done by Jimmy and was therefore better, just ask him.

The interior looked like balls, once it was finished it looked like something better. Asa Akira maybe?? :P
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8585.jpg
Here is the highfill all sanded back ready to go. Note the computer chair of death over to the right, this was the true work horse of the weekend surviving in once piece against all odds.

MOAR, very soon. =)
So zeeee turbo arrived and looks very schmick. Its a twinscroll Precision 6262 with twin turbosmart 40mm gates on another 6boost manifold. These things are pretty beefy, surprisingly run without water cooling so we're wondering its longevity but they seem to make the figures so we're running with it!

great looking build so far, keep the updates coming!
The most exciting part of the build up arrived! A Mazworx SR23VET. :)
Lots of long deliberation and hours and I mean hours ( Thanks to Eric for putting up with us) of discussion with Mazworx to get the specs just right and to see it arrive was a huge relief!
The engine is similar to R4Race which many of you will have seen but with some minor changes to make it tolerate more abuse. The engine is 90mm bore, 91mm stroke, VE head long block :) We're quite excited to hear what the engine sounds like on the big cams, that are 302 degrees on the exhaust side and 292 on the intake!!!
Here are the exhaust ports all ported out. You can see the bronze valve guides and oversize valves :)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8450.jpg
Actually machined into the rocker cover with CNC machine.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8456.jpg
Mazworx attention to detail and finish of the engine is awesome. Everything is spotlessly cleaned. ATI balancer as well.

Speed flow fittings ready to go.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8465.jpg
Mazworx transport the engine with all the holes filled with these plastic caps. Nice touch I reckon :)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8466.jpg
Small tab kits mazworx make to create a solid lifting point.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8468.jpg
Intake ports, the bit we were most excited to see in all there ported glory!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8472.jpg
From a slightly higher angle you can see almost the entire face of the oversize valve. Pretty cool imo =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8475.jpg
Another angle just cause. =)

More pics to come soon of accompanying bits :) Stay tuned.

Talk about a big update!?! Mazworx does such great work with engines...Well worth the money!
Some detailed shots of the Mazworx VE intake plenum inside and out. It'll will need a very thorough clean before it gets its final fit up. The quality of these is very impressive and when you consider the price of the whole conversion kit with these included they're second to none in value for money.
This is the right hand drive version so the end of the tank angles in to allow room for the brake booster/master.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8478-1.jpg
The welding as close to perfect as you could hope for.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8482-1.jpg
Injector ports ready for the ID2000's ;)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8487.jpg
Massive mofo will take of the majority of the engine bay on that side!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8488.jpg
Still needs to be cleaned here but looks very nice inside and out.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8492.jpg
Very neat touch the CNC cut logo.

Arty farty shot with a torch in one of the runners.

Nice and smooth ready to swallow stupid amounts of air. =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8500.jpg
The CNC O-ring grooves cut into the flange plate.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8501.jpg
You can see how the runners taper down in this shot. I'm guessing to speed the air velocity just before it rushes into the ports.

Wow, i'm speechless. These updates are amazing!
The new clutch and flywheel was picked up from John @ Unique Autosports. Someone who we've always found very friendly and helpful on our various parts shopping sprees over the years. If he cant get it he'll know who can! The flywheel is an Xtreme the clutch is a Tilton racing 7.25" twin plate.
They make this with the smaller stud pattern to suit motorsport clutches.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8708.jpg
It was acutally second hand out of Johns race car. We think the plate rattle will probably be on the loud side after playing with it out of the car but thats nothing much to worry about.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8710.jpg
Looks pretty fkn awesome imho. =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8717.jpg
The clutch next to the old one we pulled out. Its probably close to half the weight using the highly technical lift them both up and guess technique.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8844.jpg
You can see the mass that is there is much more centered so will zap less power to spin it up. We have our doubts about how nice this will be to drive on the street but time will tell!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8850.jpg
Apon following the correct installation procedure the fingers were still not sitting right and it needed to be returned for closer inspection. John happily fixed the issue, turned out one of the pivot points inside the pressure plate and come out of place during transport and it was an easy fix. The type we like on a tight schedual!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8753.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8756.jpg
New Cusco engine mounts. Lower the engine slightly and also move it forward ever so slightly. Both things we needed to happen to aid in the fitment. Note the bling engine brackets too, they're in case the driver needs to pull over and do his or her makeup on the fly. Quietly they look very clean and tidy but dont tell James we're having to much fun paying him out. ;)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8736.jpg
New Greddy water pump pulley with the ATI Balancer. It became clear the naprec cast alloy power steering pump bracket I'd ordered was no use to us as the ATI Balancer has no drive pulley in the standard location. So a custom p/steering bracket would need to be made. At the same time Andrew would make a new alternator bracket. Something we'll look at selling as a kit in the not to distant future.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8740.jpg
All sitting on the new Greddy sump with 900cc extra oil capacity.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8742.jpg
Hard to believe a motor so small can be capable of such power figures!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8743.jpg
Maxworx use these fram oil filters I've heard mixed things about them though so this might get changed for the run in. Anyone else heard of good or bad things?
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8759.jpg
New P12 CAS we decided to leave a crank trigger setup for later we simply dont have time to muck around with anything like this now it just needs to go in and work. Nothing like the standard sensor for that outcome. The big question was did we have room for it with the standard firewall position!?
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8760.jpg
More soon!
We hadn't got the clutch back yet so it was decided to fit the gearbox up and put the engine in regardless so we could see where everything was sitting and look for potential problems sooner rather than later.
Gates assembled onto the 6boost manifold with zip ties. These will be a challenge to plumb back in neatly!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8763-1.jpg
Still plenty of clearance to the booster and tower.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8766-1.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8790-1.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8796.jpg
Some of the new super special sparkle painted bits. I'm sure there will be some haters but meh I dont mind it. =) The booster was coated in this too in these shots but we decided it was a bit much so its being redone in something slightly tamer. :P
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8798.jpg
Got gate.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8801.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8804.jpg
We were hoping for some more clearance than this but it just wasnt there. The firewall had to be modified in this spot when the motor came back out.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8816.jpg
We were very happy with where the manifold positioned the turbo lots of room everywhere. Looks on the larger side even compared to the 3071.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8805.jpg
Clearance of the compressor housing to the forward facing gate is non existent but this can be linaged down very slightly to clear.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8807.jpg
A keen eye would have noticed a P12 rocker cover in the background of some shots. This will be swapped over soon as it has a nice coil pack cover for the street to keep the rain out and also lets us use the S15 coilpacks that James already had from the old setup.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8812.jpg
A reasonably good idea of what it should look like once its together and in. Basically all went as we'd hoped with just afew small things needing attention thankfully no big surprises.

We had received word from John the clutch was an easy fix and we'd be able to pick it up later that that day so the engine came back out and we pulled the gearbox box off. Thanks again to Tim who came and lent a hand.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8821.jpg
We're hoping the GKTECH RB25 billet bellhousings on their way will be able to bolt up to the Z32 box as well. (also interested to know this for my car) Anyone have experience with swapping them?
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8822.jpg
We had the old flywheel on still in case the clutch was away for awhile and we needed to start the engine further down the track.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8824.jpg
Some extra weight but well worth it. Any of the stock SR20 boxes wont hold up for long once the new engine is in and working properly!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8827.jpg
*insert Holinger here* If only! Maybe in the very distant future though.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8831.jpg
The new alternator bracket test fit and water neck test fit.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8829.jpg
The ATI balancer came with this add on pulley to drive the power steering pump too.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8832.jpg
New alloy water neck made up as the VE one is in a FWD configuration and doesn't suit we didnt have a stock one on hand.

Amazing build! Would love to get some video of the car
So is the Mazworx motor a complete sr20ve, sr20vet (from a nissan x-trail) or is it a sr20det block and sr20ve head?
Its a P11VE head married to an SR20DET S13 block with a full house supertech head, porting and sleeved/bored/forged/stroked bottom end. Final capacity ends up being 2.32L with a rev limit of 9.5k.
We'll see how it goes probably set of rev limit of 9k for extra reliability.
There are some videos of the car up here (http://www.youtube.com/user/SXDevelopments) but that was with the old setup. Should have some more videos up soon of the new setup if we dont have any major issues.
Test fit of the new power steering and alternator bracket mounted significantly lower and brackets literally a tenth of the weight. :) We'll most likely be reproducing these in the not too distant future in a slightly neater CNC fashion.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/photo1.jpg
Sometimes its only the small things but we were really proud of how these turned out. Car will be the test dummy to ensure they're strong enough.

Sorry man not sure about that one.
With the sorts of power levels we're chasing we been told we'd need to upgrade from a 3" core to a 4" one so we started looking around. James ended up deciding on this one from Plasmaman Pro Series tube and fin range based on the proven results of other SR setups.
The whole Item is surprisingly light.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9034.jpg
Can still see the writing on the core from when the end tanks were made up for it.

There is approx a 50mm gap below the front mount when run butted against the top radiator support. This will allow the radiator full air for that section hopefully helping slightly with water temps.

Strange... this doesn't look like porn. Oh well, works for me.
Thanks guys, i think... :P
We got a call from Heasman Steering to say the suspension had been finished and was ready to pickup. These have been in James car for a long time but we had all the seals rebuild before last years event. This time we've been able to upgrade to external canisters. Its the first time we've used them on any of our cars so we're excited to see how they go and work with Jono from Heasmans to get them set up. (if we make a practice day to do that!)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/sweeeeeeet.jpg
Didnt make it in time before the fronts were bolted in so I didnt get a chance to take any pictures of them all layed out neatly. So here is a picture of the rears in a dirty old box :P

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9329.jpg
We're going to have to make some brackets that mount the front canisters up underneath the top rails. They should be out of the way here but also easy to access for adjustments.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8953_1.jpg
We've gone with SPL arms from JDM Obsession the local distributor it was just as cheap as importing them ourselves and with much less hassle. We will be replacing the rear arms with these where possible too but this will be last minute so no pics yet. The bolts in the caster arm are to suit the optional air ducts they make. They wont fit with our front wheels though so we'll have to make up some ducting later on for the brakes.

Nice chunky rod ends look alot stronger than the ones we pulled out.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9334.jpg
JDM Obession also sell these very neat little swaybar links. We're binning our current whiteline ones which are abit hammered for a set of these. Still need to try find some that will suit the rear though.

So the wiring got underway first priority getting the car to starting state so we can check for problems/leaks like everyone seems to hit with a new setup. We'll leave the interior switches and all the dash stalks stuff till after for now just ECU talking to engine.
Dividing everything out before connectors went on.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9020.jpg
Funds have hit an all time low for obvious reasons so we're going to reuse James old radiator. It doesn't look the best after being in and out of the old setup with shroud a few times but will get the job done. =)

Bilsteins with Eibach springs is such a fantastic combo. I have a set on my STi and it never gets upset during bumpy corners, trail braking or torn in under heavy braking. The only other set I would consider better are JRZ for twice the cost. Looks fantastic gentlemen.
Some pictures Mazworx sent through of some motor stuff just prior to and during it all being assembled.

omg this build is amazing!!! i love detailed clean builds like this.
With WTAC only weeks away we bit the bullet and decided we needed to out source some of the fabrication work or we had no hope of making it to the event. James had been talking to Hypertune after buying one of their throttle bodies for the car. After seeing some of their work first hand and the fact they could fit us in on short notice the choice was made easy. We dropped the car off on the Tuesday to be picked up by the weekend.
I turned up on Thursday afternoon to drop off the headlights as they may have effected where the cooler piping was able to run. Alot of the work had already been done so I grabbed some progress shots. We were really happy with the quality of work the speed of the job and how friendly all the guys were.
Alloy shroud plate for the new radiator position doubles and an air guide.

Thanks guys.
I had the day off work the next day so I headed over to Hypertune again to get some further progress pics and talk about some parts for my own build. The guys were finishing off the exhaust when I got there I really wish I could TIG weld like this! =) Unfortunatly it was all up in the air on the hoist to do this so I didn't get any shots of the IC piping all finished.

great build!!
I have one suggestion.
Fram is great for daily driving, for what your doing, I would switch it up with a Mobil 1 filter or something of higher quality.
Also, I would suggest a Tomei oil block adapter, with a Greddy Relocation block and a custom oil cooler ( B&M 8x11" one maybe ) with -10 AN hose. just the last peice of added protection for the motor, and it should take away any stress of oil breakdown from high temps of track time.

Thanks for the tips man, we're aware of this stuff. The Fram filter will be dumped after the first 100km for something better. We're going to use a greddy GTR core with ducting. With the power we're after with this thing I doubt we'll be able to get oil/water temps stable though. It'll probably be 1-2 laps on then a cool down.

Thats cool they're all good points! :)
So the car was picked up on the Saturday morning and trailered back so the rest of the work could be undertaken. I couldnt be there when it was picked up as I'd gone in to checkout the lowdown showcased thing which was quite cool indeed. So excuse the iphone pics as thats all that James had before it was disassembled. We were really happy with Hypertunes work and were surprised to see how fast they were able to get everything done.
All plumbed up.

Jimmy holding the dump pipe, looks like some sort of illegal substance apparatus. :P
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/crackpipe.jpg
Pulled it all out to allow access for other jobs that needed doing. Also bought some Royal Purple run in oil recommended by Mazworx to run the engine in on. This stuff seems extortionately expensive for run in oil but it was decided for the extra money why risk it if thats what they suggested to use. After talking to Eric the reason they like it is the high zinc content.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9222.jpg
We cut the extra piece of the bracket of OEM off the VVL solenoids as its not needed anymore and just makes for less space in the engine bay and weight to have it.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9227.jpg
Link G4 Xtreme was the ecu of choice for James the plan is to run the car on a flex fuel setup in the future and this is capable of that as well as some other fancy stuff which we can get into later.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9228.jpg
James was eating a jam donut hence several sugar sprinkles whoops. :P

New flange welded onto the Mazworx T/B by Hypertune.

Different angle, matches up with the Mazworx welding well.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9233.jpg
The R33GTR calipers have had a very hard life which is only about to get harder. We thought we were having issues with a sticking caliper so it was decided to give them a fresh set of seals as a small kindness before what they'll have to endure soon. ;)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9235.jpg
The fronts were looking pretty shabby before with several coats of paint so we had them soda blasted which brought them up like this.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9236.jpg
Looked new I might get this done to mine. We were tossing up if we should just leave them raw like this.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9238.jpg
New 2L Hypertune made catch can for the corner of the engine bay. Nice and neat/out of the way. Up in that corner its away from all the turbo heat and allows reasonably short piping to it.

IF it were an RB26 I'd agree. I've yet to hear an SR setup with gates to atmosphere I thought sounded awesome though?
Regardless we'll be running the same dump pipe setup on the street as a weekend car so its not an option.
Once all the fab work Hypertune had done for us was stripped out along with the turbo the wiring work and plumbing for everything got back under way.

Still looks like a shit fight in here but the car wiring wise was getting close to having the essentials done for a first start. ECU not in the car here but you can see the bracket on the left here where it will be mounted.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9254.jpg
Solenoid block mounted up on the Mazworx bracket here. James is still running the standard heater box and core so its a bit busy on this side of the motor still. New braided clutch line in now too.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9258.jpg
Closeup.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9265.jpg
When James purchased the plenum we ordered it with an S14/15 IACV flange on it. (you can order it with either 13 or 14/15) The 14/15 ones are much cheaper than the S13 valves to buy for some reason so this worked out well.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9277.jpg
O-ring seals, vacuum fittings, Hypertune T/B and IACV bolted up ready for the final fit up. Also note Jimmy modelling the awesomeness of a "snack pack" kebab the staple diet of everyone helping. =)

Hot chips (I think most Americans call them french fries?) covered in beef kebab meat with garlic and bbq sauce. MMMMmMmm =)

New twin pump surge tank setup. Nothing in the car and the second pump is only activated when our preset injector duty cycle level is met to prevent heating the fuel unnecessarily. Also no fuel lines inside the car which is a plus.

Its not actually a custom mix its a one off colour released by a company. I'll try find out what its called for you. Its near impossible to get though apparently our painter came across some somehow.

SXDS15 Mazworx SR23VET - YouTube (http://youtu.be/7fMSCeV_U8U)
The start up specs from Mazworx say that the motor should be cranked without compression and without the rocker cover on to check that oil pressure is building ok and the oil spray bars are working for the cams. Some shots of the head with no cover on it.
The P11 Rocker cover gaskets for around the spark plug holes are a totally different size to the P12 ones we found out last minute. They're the same as S15 so luckily the local Nissan dealership had them in stock so a mad dash was done to go buy a set. When they go in they only just fit on the outside of the ring around the hole.

I would give a guess since I have basically the same Mazworx setup, but if he's like me, its not information that he would like everyone to know. Great job on the build, it looks great.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
I like how clean this thread is, not only your work, but posts as well and not many people are trolling it, so build content per page is quite high.

Thanks mate, lots of building has been happening in a reasonably short period of time so there is plenty of documenting to be done! =)
I guess not many people trolling it cause there are not that many viewing it. :P
The fuel system was almost completed in these shots with just the final connections of the pumbing to be done. Consisting of two Pierburg pumps capable of -360L/h the second one only kicking in once a certain injector duty cycle is reached (set to whatever is appropriate). Both pumps on the side of the surge tank. None of the system goes into the car apart from the wiring of the pumps.
We were really happy with how compact and neat it turned up to be.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9389.jpg
Teflon lines for the last part cause it was to hard to get the hard lines up in here.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9387.jpg
Hardlines the main length of the car with an inline filter. This stuff is super light and self supportive so it doesn't need to be braced onto the chassis nearly as much as soft line does.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9386.jpg
Small amount of rubber line has to be used to connect to these pumps as they dont have threaded ends on them which is a slight downside.

Andrew spent the whole day sorting last minute things out with ecu tests and a million other tiny jobs and was able to do the first start. The car then got towed to Unigroup to be run in on the dyno and get everything bedded in and find potential issues. One thing other than some small leaks we found was that the VVL solenoids were not working properly so the car was towed back home to get that fixed along with the heap of work still to be done on everything else.

Ugh. This thing is awesome!
Excited to see numbers!
The bonnet was a pain in the ass to line up this time because the hinges had been removed from the body for painting and they bolt on under the front guards. So every time they're adjusted the guards have to be almost taken right off so it took us afew hours of swearing at one another to get it all lined up. Worked out well in the end though.

End plan to make it one of one single alloy sheet and bend it all up to suit. It will be independently fixed to the car and just sit over the outside mouth of the front bar.

If those ear buds dont work out, I have 2 sets of Nacre Quiet Pro, cancels out excessive loud noises, amplifies softer noises, like voices. I wish I would have seen more cars when I was in Sydney, but any of my buddies wanted to do was sleep and go to King's Cross at night. Anyways, the updates are great. Looking forward to seeind it completed.

The P11 Rocker cover gaskets for around the spark plug holes are a totally different size to the P12 ones we found out last minute. They're the same as S15 so luckily the local Nissan dealership had them in stock so a mad dash was done to go buy a set. When they go in they only just fit on the outside of the ring around the hole.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_9376.jpg
Hi,
so to install P12 rocker cover on P11 head, you just need to change spark plugs gasket to S15 one? and what about coils? will Denso ones will fit, which Mazworx recommends ?
Tell me please what size of your HT Throttle and did you weld HT flange on manifold, or Q45 flange can work with HT tb's ?
P.S. Nice car!
I have quite same setup

Throttle Bodies (http://www.hypertune.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=90&Itemid=83)
Its the 77mm one we used and got hypertune to weld their flange on to suit. We used S15 coilpacks as they mount straight into the P12 cover we didn't use the denso ones that came with the kit.
Yeh just swap the P11 ones out for the S15 rubbers from nissan they just seal on the outside of the platform on the head. Hope that helps, nice engine bay man some hours gone into that! =)
What turbo are you running and got any dyno charts??
We had some last minute issues and were unable to make the event this year. This is the dyno chart which is still not finished being tuned yet on E85. We're really happy with the curve and James cant wait to test pilot it shortly.

Now we can sort all these tiny issues out without any time pressure and hopefully get out to another event soon. =)

How about tq numbers?
Its on a chassis dyno not a hub one so these figures are meaningless. Would be interesting to find out though.
Had an awesome weekend I cant believe how far ahead this nemo thing is. Suttons just got edged off the podium in open class which was a bit disappointing same with scorch in the last session. I could openly see the scorch teams disappointment when suzuki was unable to match Earl Bambers time while we watched the timing screen in their garage. So close!

World Time Attack Challenge 2011 by TithBrothers - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGP_z59zgNc)
Found this on youtube :spot your s15 at 4:20. Nice Build
Been a while since last update. Everyone was so tired after the lead up to WTAC things slowed down for a little while. The last few weeks have been a bit more focused again. James put a list together of everything that needed to be done to have it back on the road. The list was surprisingly long even though the car was so close to making the event.
This included:
-Fix clutch - picking up too low
-Fix dash as fuel level, speedo and tacho all not working and not finished being wired up
-Fit windscreen wipers and wire up
-Fit E85 sensor for flex fuel setup
-Fix power steering - freshly built pump decided to pack it up on the drive home from WTAC.
-Fit heater box and retrofit wiring so it all works like stock (excluding aircon)
-Better secure wiring
-Swaybar hitting sump
-Replace dodgy v-band clamps (got hot and started to fall apart)
-Electric windows wired up
-Hazard lights and cigarette lighter (For performance box as a back up)
-Change clutch master cylinder and slave
So while none of them are very exciting its quite a bit of work.
First step was to finish off the wiring. The car went to the Suttons where Andrew helped massivly by sorting almost all of it out. (since the rest of us are useless at it :P )
Since they have a hoist we decided to swap in the new clutch at the same time. We had a couple of issues, firstly the pick up point was changing and secondly it was pretty loud. Hard to explain didn't really sound like the clutch but it made the car feel pretty rough for just cruising round though on the street.
We made the tough call that despite the big weight penalty we'd take the tilton clutch out and put in a Nismo twin super copper mix. This added nearly 10kg to the car which is pretty stupid but for the street we decided it had to be done. The tilton clutch was actually very easy to drive but it just doesn't dampen the engine noise making the car feel too much like a race car for street use. Because it was so light the engine felt awesome and revvy though so we hope we don't regret it.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/20120930_112953.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/20120930_114652.jpg
Next issue was the sway bar which would have been a huge problem if the car had hit the track at WTAC. Basically when the car was on the hoist there was quite a bit of room between the sump and the swaybar but with the car on the ground there actually was very little room. The small amount of driving it had, had marked the sump from the swaybar touching it so we reckon on the track it would have done possibly cracked/pryed the sump which could have cost us the motor.
So next step was to work out why it was touching and what we could do to fix it. James Had a chat to The (R4Race) and his had ample room. So we had a look at the new whiteline swaybar and they had 9mm more room. See below... Yellow is the one of the SXD180, middle is the new whiteline s15 bar and the top one is the one we had also 27mm Whiteline(maybe 6 years old). Pretty weird to change this angle but the new one looks like it will do the trick.

We'll the S15 is almost ready to go and have the tune finished up the power steering seems to have been fixed as of the weekend. Had a dinner thing for nfis birthday on the weekend and organised this VE cake for him. Was pretty impressed with how well it turned out they did an awesome job even had the sparkles lol.

Should have some more updates soon with the car clocking up some street kilometers have properly bedding everything in. Then hopefully get out to the track early next year when the heats backed off a bit.
Finally got most thing sorted and a rough street tune into the car so we can clock up some km on the street and sort out any further issues. We had some issues with the solenoid for the EBC working intermittently so its been unplugged. Still managed to make 230rwkw on 6psi gate pressure. Going to hit 1000km and get the final few things sorted before heading back to the dyno for a full tune.
All going well we should be able to make the NSCC day at the end of May for its first track rundown.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/sundaydrive_zps1cafa18d.jpg
Put over 1000km on the clock now with the current tune without any major issues. We noticed when swapping the wheels over there was play in both rear wheel bearings. Pulled apart the rear hubs/bearings to replace both sides on the long weekend. Had some trouble getting the old bearings off the hubs but made it in the end with some help from mr grinder.
Picked up some new nismo studs to replace some damaged ones from ages ago when unnamed people tried fitting wheel nuts without open ends which were not quite deep enough whoops. :P

Hopefully have time to get it all back together this coming weekend ready for tuning and some track time in the next few weeks. Cant wait to go for a ride with some proper boost levels! =)
So we finally made it to the track for our first proper shakedown of the car. A massive thanks to Jono from Bilstein/Heasmans who helped us get there and back. Also for your feedback on setup I'm sure it'll be very helpful getting our setup dialed in quickly. We managed first and second in class with some very conservative driving. Alot of the time was spent feeling things out and with the guys keeping one eye on the dash the whole time.
Doing some final preps and checks.

Unfortunately the day got cut short with a hairline crack appearing in cylinder 4 runner one of the ones which did not have an issue last time and hadn't been re welded. We also had some minor oil pressure issues you'll hear from the incar footage some small bips. We had the warnings set very conservatively so we wont have done any damage at this point. But given that the guys were not really on it properly and the car will see higher extended g's when this happens we're concerned about this. So we'll have to look into this further.

What was the oil pressure reading? was that at idle or under load?
Oil Pressure sits around 30psi @ idle. This was dropping from 70psi+ to 50psi+ under corner exit at high rpm where your still pulling lateral G's but are starting to accelerate hard also.

The splitter is finished we just need to sand back the to section and paint it. Heading down to another practice day on the 30th at wake field so we're planning to take both splitters with us and run it then.

Hahah thats cool man thanks. :)
We do like Flight of the Concords regardless. lol
An issue we had at our first shakedown was a small coolant seep from the lower coolant outlet. We'd actually resealed this twice thinking it was leaking out the mating surface to the thermostat block. On closer inspection there was a tiny hairline crack in the outlet. With abit of a twist between two fingers the whole section cracked off.

Wow it sounds amazing
Well we headed down to Goulburn on Sunday night and crashed the night down there. Avoiding a really early morning for the big day ahead. JDM Yard had organised a private day which we managed to get word of (thanks Tom) and head down too. We ended up having to pull the intake manifold off again before leaving to swap out a snapped screw cap bolt in it but this happened without many dramas. We've got it down to a fine art now. :P

During the sessions we gradually worked our way down to 1.02.8, then 1.01.7, then 1.01.5 then finally 1.01.4 in the final session. But by the final session we were consistently sub 102 on flying laps. For a first time out with this setup and an owner driver team we're pretty stoked with. The car worked with only small issues we could fix throughout the day. Oil surge was basically a non issue with the changes we'd made.

The splitter survived a high speed off at turn nine with only the under side rub plates copping it hard will need to replace these before the next time out.

The amount of bugs out was rather insane, maybe pest control sponsorship is in order? :P

Thanks again to the JDM Yard team for organising this is a shot of their integra which is entered in open class. Not sure what lap times it was doing but its looking wicked quick down the main straight and through the top. Looks like the car is torque steering pretty hard making for an exciting ride!

Thanks to Jono from Bilstein Racing for his tech support via mobile with suspension tweaks. This really made all the difference to our day getting the thing dialed in much better and a more comfortable setup so James could push harder. We were all blown away by the large difference some very small changes made to the car. I'm hoping I can scrape the budget abit further and get this setup for my own car based on our experiences this weekend.
Incar from the lap.

I have some more footage of some "moments" and gopro from the front bar again which I can go through later and post.
More soon!
Back from the track today. Was an interesting day... Started off with a bit of power steering fluid we noticed leaking that we thought was some residue of the fluid boiling at the last track day. What turned out to be the case was the high pressure side power steering line had been heat effected and was seeping. Given the high pressure involved we didn't want to take the chance of the line splitting and spraying on a hot manifold. pirtek was called and they were happy to fix. We ended up driving around all morning organising and had a repaired line back at the track with ps fluid by 10:30 had the car back together by 12. We were also keen to test a new front splitter we made with a lot more complex shapes. We weren't sure whether our theory was going to work in practice and also if it was going to be strong enough.
So after finally getting out on the track we found our splitter massively changed the balance we'd fine tuned the last time and the car was quite difficult to drive with high speed snap over steer which was interesting at turn 3 and 9. Actually had my first spin in a long time.
Added some more rear wing (now maxed) and it made it slightly better but still a hard drive. We're optimistic though as even with a pretty average lap the car did a 1.01.6 which is two tenths off the pb but it felt like there was more in it if we can get the rear to settle down. The next week leading to wtac is going to be very busy...
Pics to come.
A quick rundown of our weekend past at WTAC.
I'll put up some footage and info shortly... Here is an entertaining teaser... We had a beautifully handling balanced car in practice but changing to the advans resulted in quite a different car. Really didn't expect it to change so dramatically but it did. We spent all of WTAC trying to get the car to handle nicely and tried literally everything but it just wasn't our weekend. Still had a ball though.
Below video was a last ditch test, we took off the new front aero we made thinking that maybe we just had way too much front downforce. The below video I turned in slower than all the other laps, although still turned in at about 230km/hr... Wheel turned in but the car definitely didn't! Needed a new race suit after this... Note even after going through the sand trap and out the other side I was still doing 80km/hr.

James actually turned into turn 1 slower than I was with the new splitter we just seriously underestimated how much of a difference our new splitter was making!
The bilsteins are top of the line Motorsport piston with adjustable valve stacks for rebound and canisters with high and low speed bump. They are seriously awesome. At Wakefield even minor adjustments could change the car.
Car was handling awesome on the hankooks. On the practice day I did a relatively relaxed lap and did a 1.38 just getting used to the track again. Was awesome to drive. Then we put the advans on and it was a serious bucket with bad oversteer. Problem with wtac is you get so little track time we didn't have enough time to re tune the suspension.
Since the event had a chat to quite a few people that found the advans different to the hankooks. The BC automotive guys were battling under steer in testing and then changed to advans and the car was actually better for them.
We seriously under estimated a tyre change could actually change the balance of the car. Lesson learnt...
