Pulling A/C out....how to release refigerant???

Is there a certain way to perform this when wanting to discharge what is left in the system before removing it? I plan to do this in a weeks time and was wonderin what precautions I should take....thanks in advance!!

Edit: Just read a thread on A/C so I have an idea of what to do with the refigerant, but I ran across another issue and was wondering what a solid answer was. I'm taking out all relative components under the hood and that's it...not going under the dash and what not for the remaining pieces there....will my heater be affected when doing this or no? A/C can takeka hike..gotta have my heat though....

Your heater will still work. It uses engine coolant. If you have an older car that uses R12 refrigerant, please take it to a shop and have them empty it. It won't cost much. If you have a newer car that uses R134A ('94 up I think) just remove a valve to release the refrigerant. It does not contain CFCs so it won't harm our enviroment.

Not sure if 1995 is considered an older car, but I think I may just have it done professionally to avoid pollution.

we let mine go by accident, inside a garage (got stuck on motor, ripped the pipe) and let me tell you, that stuff will mess you up. i couldnt think or see straight for a few hours, im sure i lost a few brain cells that night. lesson to be learned: if you do it yourself, do it outside, and have fans, it sticks, and cant be to good for you.

Around here some shops will vacuum it out for free if it is 134 becuase the can capture it and resell it to other people. At least I know of 2 around here that have done for free for me in the past because of that. Just let you know you might ask around and see if they will.

Have it released properly. Depending on what you have in there, it could really mess you up, and polluteing because you are lazy is sorta stupid.

correct. most any shop that does a/c work will take out the old (134) for free.

Was your refrigerent r12 or r134a because i find it werd that you got messed up on r-12 because i beleive i saw a video where they were saying it was perfectly safe and the inventor was breathing it in to show it wouldn't do anything.

whatever comes in a 1990 240. it seriously made me light headed for like 4 hours, and bright lights hurt my head. ill never mess with that stuff again.
