Well this is my goal a VH45de powered AWD 97 240sx. Started off as a base model and I did a 5-lug/300z front brake conversion. Pulled the engine to put into my son's 91 240sx se that he is learning to drive (pretty cool first car to me). Well enough talk here are some pictures.

My hope is Maxima Knuckles, same suspension setup as 240 with everything you need for the fwd portion... So far the difference is the steering arm location. I will get them bolted on soon and take some more pictures. That and pulling the interior for the floor pan mods.

Thanks a lot of good info. Wish the pictures were still there. Yes my plan on the attessa is to use a carpc with inertia sensors to PWM the hicas pump gving me 50/50 split during takeoff and dialing it back in the turns. It will take a lot of seat time to get the percentages right and I can always have an on/off switch to make it just work at first.

I would say clip the shock towers out of R32 or 33 and weld them in place of the S14 shock towers. At least then you won't have to have custom coil overs etc. You can't deny the badassness of seeing axles in the front of an S chassis :)

Don't need custom coilovers as the Maxima's mount up exactly the same. Finished my 300z lsd swap into my 92 240, and manual seat belt conversion and tomorrow night I am working on its dash....

Night after that I will pull the 240 front knuckles and mount the Maxima's to give everyone an idea of what I am going for. If the spindle count is the same then I am GOOD TO GO! Any one know the counts????? :x:

I hadn't seen that. Called them again. $5k. Asked if they would break the kit up as I am not doing the skyline suspension bits. He said he would ask and get back to me. My R33 xmember fell through it was for a 2wd ;-(

I would venture to guess that this will be achieved the same way it is in the GT-R's, incorporating it into the oil pan somehow.

have you ever owned a GTR or a GTS4 to understand exactly how the AWD works?

How are you going to run the front diff, and axles? The RB26 and GTS4 RB20 had cast aluminum pans, but for a inline 6... The VH was never offered in AWD...


Leaves me scratching my head as to how you're going to run the front driveshaft to a diff, through the pan, and into the front half shafts...

That's not even counting getting the ATESSA-ETS to work properly, that's a whole 'nother animal, as GTR's and GTS4's are in a sense, 2wd, and the ATESSA-ETS computer controls front wheel bias based on G load/slip. HKS Kansai made a AWD controller, but when left on max, the weak front diff would grenade.

If you somehow graft the 26/GTS4 oil pan, and need a touger diff, don't pay out the ass for a skyline diff, the LSD's used in the Honda H22 drop right in, and can be had for around $400.

Don't doubt this man, he may try to come off as "not knowing what he is doing" and lost. But in reality he knows. He has a AWD Durango with a Viper V10 in it that is supercharged with full Viper interior as in 4 seats 2 in front, 2 in back.

I'm pulling for ya bro, I think you can have this finished by the end of the year, if you stop spending money on the SR coupe you bought from me. Haha.

I agree I might have jumped the gun on posting this build but having multiple opinions/ideas may shed new light on issues I have ran into or not thought of. Things will start moving a lot quicker once I get the 92 sr20 car reliable so my son can start learning to drive the 91 hatch. Got laid off from one of my three jobs so I have more time but less money. :-(

I have 94 maxima spindles. Being the pair cost $46 it is a low cost alternative and cheap for testing. Spindle count will determine if I go custom. I had GTR axles on their way but ??????

I haven't located a GTR crossmember yet so currently the s14 one is holding the v-8 up as I measure clearances and decide what I will be cutting and moving. Once I have all these numbers I will pull the v8 out and start the front diff modification. Below is my current tight spot. If I could move this back just a little more then the body mounts for the tranny crossmember will not have to be cut and the shifter will line up almost perfectly to the stock location. I have started pulling the interior but life and sr20's have happened.:cry:

At first I was planning on modifying the GTR oilpan to replace the VH45's then looking at how shallow the factory VH pan is I am leaning more towards chopping up the GTR pan and leaving the VH pan in place. The RB pan rails are wider than the VH45's so it can fit around it. I do have to "thread the needle" as the front output shaft has to go between the starter and the slave cylinder. That ultimately decides where the front diff will be located.

Controlling the AWD. My current plan is to use a HICAS pump to provide the 300psi to engage the power split. Then using a car PC and intertia sensors vary the split. Most basic can be a simple on/off switch.

I'm 99% sure it's missing the inner part that would bolt to the front diff flange tho, but maybe that would at least give you a direction to go with the front axles? Just trying to help. I can't wait to see videos of this thing when it's on the ground and driveable!

the jdm stuff is going to be pricier just for the sake of being pricier. G35x and M35x both use a seperable atessa transfer case from the auto trans. Use g35x transfer case on vq manual trans with x front diff and axles. swap x front hubs onto your altima spindles and your spline count is golden. as far as oil pan is concerned, pull g35x pan, take measurements and have a halfway decent fab shop replicate the axle tunnel.

done and done.

the g/m35x stuff is coming down since it isn't 2005 anymore.

Well life has been throwing me curve balls lately so haven't had much time to play. Fuel pump went out in the yellow boomerang (92 SR20DET). Me and my son put a little time in the Louisiana 100F 50-70% humidity to get the dash out. Have to pull the rest so we can start cutting, and cleaning and welding and painting....

That is what I got at the same time I did their Z1 TT Clutch & Flywheel Combo. They said it is easily streetable and can hold 600ftlbs of TQ. It can what I can afford for now. :hs:

Thanks for the lead on the clutch fork upgrade, I'll be using it on my RB25. I got my kit through Zspeed though because they have a chromoly pivot ball included.

Sorry for the delay. I have made some progress. These pictures are unedited and not pretty! I promise it will look a little better once my brother and I are finished.

I have reshaped the AC box to provide more clearance for the passenger side head. The piece that I am holding has been moved to the left as it interfered with reshaping the firewall. The lower hard lines rotated to fit into the new location.

There is enough clearance around the transfer case to be able to change the fluid without dropping the tranny.

I might move the engine forward just a hair to get the shifter lined up perfectly however, the further back and lower the better for balance sake.

A cool side note is that there is no interference with the seats so full adjustabilty is still there. The passenger side tranny mount did have to go as it interfered with the front output shaft. Plan is to use the subframe rail on the passenger side as a mounting point and cross over to the opposite side hitting the factory spots on the drivers side.

Ugh. Upgraded the 1'MC to a 1-1/16" MC. ME and my son get in the car to make a test drive started it and my son says "The brake pedal just went to the floor by itself!". Now I need a booster. Any recommendations? Get a new s13 stock one or put my s14's automatic one on there. I know how the hell could I be building an AWD 240 and not know the simple stuff. I feel the same way. :-(

I assume you are talking about the AC part? With the AC box after I cut the plastic loosening the fitting allowed it to be turned to the new position. In the firewall I am cutting the firewall holes to the same dimensions in the new locations and using the factory rubber to protect it...

Well the weather hasn't worked with me these last few days. Got the r34 xmember and here is the first test fit. Frame rail and x-member will need modification.

Got a spline count on r32 front axles and they are different. Now my thinking is that the hubs can be swapped with the maxima's. Hunting down that answer now....

Custom can be made. Sad thing is that the custom axles cost almost as much as the car did!!! If I must I must but trying to find the most cost effective way. I hope this is the first of many AWD 240 projects. :D

Well between 100+ degree days, thunderstorms and/or late nights at work I haven't been able to get out and work on the car. I pulled the vh45's factory oil pan (it will need some trimming on the passenger side) and used my floor jack to lift the hacked up GTR diff somewhat into place (in reference to the engine). I am getting more motivated as it looks like I can get the diff in and still have a starter! Once I get the lower control arms I will be able to positively locate the GTR subframe and Diff.

Well parts are my big hold up. Bought and paid for axles then they call back and say they don't have them. Bought subframe and LCA's, subframe came in but the LCA's haven't showed up yet. First one thing and then another, guess this is the way it goes with custom projects. Finally got the subframe modified to bolt to one pair of the original s14 bolts, once it is up and square I will drill new holes in the frame for the other 3 bolts per side to go in the same way the factory is setup.

One step forward and another back. I could not figure out a way to miss the 300z starter with the GTR front output shaft. SO I sent off the flex plate and flywheel to a custom flywheel shop to have one made that will let me use a 300z clutch and the vh45 starter. Supposedly three more weeks until it ships

Also ordered a complete r32 rear subframe and front subframe(WITH AXLES) as that was cheaper than buying new ring and pinions for the front diff to match the rear.. These are on their way from Japan so a few more weeks on them.

Not much to see in the way of pictures but will post as soon as things arrive. Almost have the interior back in just want to fix some missing foam that seals the AC unit from sucking in trash in the cabin.

I have been spending what little time/money I have getting my son's 91 hatch and my 92 sr20det coupe ready for Autocross and Drifting. And on a side note my machinist has started on deck plates for my V10 Iron/Viper swap into a AWD Durango........ I promise things are moving forward but have been working a tremendous amount hours between 4 jobs to try and pay for all of this stuff. Man this is FUN!!!!!

Well I FINALLY got the flywheel in and mounted to the crank (awaiting more flywheel bolts). This allows me to clear front drive shaft! Supposedly the sub-frames will leave Canada in the next week or so. After 7 months of waiting I am not holding my breath yet.

AFTER 7 MONTHS!!!! I finally got the front and rear R32 subframes in. I am going to use the front R34 (that I have already started modifying) subframe instead but the will use all of the brakes from the R32 subframes. The GTR spindles are too small compared to the Maxima's. Going to the salvage yard today to try and source some Maxima Axles. Hope that the Maxima outer will fit the GTR axle.

Just got my modded Maxima knuckles. Got them at the shop now for new gearings and getting some maxima axles in to see if we can modify the GTR ones so I don't have to buy completely custom ones.

Got both the front and rear subframes powder coated and will post pics once I can get home in the day light.

Sorry for the slow updates and progress. Had a death in the family that has turned our world up side down and we are still trying to recover. I am more determined than ever to get this car finished! Once I can get it rolling I am moving it to a shop instead of the yard on plywood sheets!

Forgot I had taken this picture. This is the brace kit I welded in before sending the s14 rear subframe in for powder coating. Pressed in solid bushing for frame and diff as well.

Next thing to knock off the list is to get my machinist to make an adapter to bolt to the knuckle allowing me to use GTR lower ball joints to match up with the R34 GTR Lower Control arms. These will also allow me to lower the car an inch and keep factory suspension geometry and use the cool aluminum LCA's! Once in the shop (making engine pulls easy) I will start the custom oil pan and motor/transmission mounts.

You could also use small eyelets with wires crimped/soldered to them and place them under the screws for each gauge. Everything is clearly labeled so it'll be easy to figure out what trace goes where...and you can remove it in the future if need be.

I figured it out! Just had to sacrifice a s13 cluster plug and now I have the pigtail. Next step is to start digging through wiring diagrams to verify a couple of the pins (as you can see most are labeled). I have rear lower control arms on their way then I can assemble the rolling suspension and get the car to a shop for the last of the fabrication work.

I am closing on my first house next week. It has a 3000sqft shop with a 10k lb car lift! Also has 2500sqft cover for parking. This means I can finally work on a concrete slab instead of on plywood in the dirt! I also sold my sr20 swap and so a vh45 is going into my s13 coupe right now with a custom all metal widebody since I've widened it 4.5" front and rear for the PBM suspension I put on it. It is posted up on v8nissans. Trying to get the s13 on the road by March 16th for autocross and drift season. Then I promise 100% of my spare time and resources will be put into the kouki. I am learning how to widebody on the s13 so I can do the kouki right the first time! Trying to fit 315's in the rear and 275's up front.

My son has the 1991 Hatch, I have the 92 coupe and the 97. Trying to get the s13 finished so I can learn to paint on it. Then paint my son's car before he leaves for boot camp at the end of May. The s13's previous owner had a rb20 swap in it. Pulled it and sold it to me as a shell with a vh45. I worked on it, sold it to a friend, he started a sr20 swap, sold it back to me and I finished the swap. Mentioned to a friend I might be interested to sell the sr swap and by the end of the day I had a buyer. This swapped all of my priorities around and so this VH45 is going into it so I can drift and autox. The other vh45 will now be rebuilt for boost for the AWD kouki. All while working three jobs and remodeling this house we are closing on!

I sure hope so. I got married and had my son at 19. I've worked 2 and 3 jobs most of my life. I regret not spending more time with him as he has grown up. I thank God that he has turned into such a good man despite having me as a Dad. These projects have been a way for us to spend time with one another and for both of us to learn how to work on cars. I am glad that I have started this 240 thing as I have met and made great friends that I never would had without these crazy projects!!!

Yeah I sold my 240 hatch so I could take a few extra classes this semester so I can graduate early next year. I'm just so happy I already have a job lined up after I graduate so I can buy a new one and (and a few other cars) and do my projects right. In the pictures it is 3,000sq ft. There is an additional 2500sq ft covered without a concrete floor. Air and power is available inside and out with hookups every few feet. My plan is haul in a few hundred yards of dirt and level things out to make it 100% low car friendly and so I can pour the rest in concrete and enclose once my $$ catches up to my dreams (or my wife starts working again!).

It also has a 1200lb hoist on a swing by the main door and a 750 lb hoist under the covered area for cleaning deer (current use) and hopefully for unloading junk yard scores!

Finally a small update. Things are slowly getting back to a new normal after losing my father in an accident, my grandfather (6 months of hospice from cancer), and my son leaving for boot camp (Proud of his decision to serve sad to see him leave).

No it isn't moving very fast I am embarrassed to say. The s13 is nearing completion and everything that I have learned with its vh45de swap is getting me ready to finish this one up. My latest hold up was a truck load of insulation being dropped off to insulate my shop and my brothers shop and house. I am almost done getting it out of my way so I can work again, on something, anything....

I have hung most of this insulation by myself and climbing the scaffolding while carrying these has not been an easy indeavor! I am helping a friend with his 5-lug/300z brake upgrade, misc upgrade everythings, and then the s13 gets the lift again for the final push to get it back on the road. Then the Kouki will get brought inside for her love.

Also a lot has been going into my Sons 91 hatch. This picture really doesn't do it justice though. We found the bumper extensions and have gotten side skirts for it so we can get the paint job finished up, then his is due a j30 diff swap and 5 lug conversion before I take it up to him. I have been in communication with SCAT cranks to build a stroker kit for the AWD kouki. We are in talks of a 92mm stroker to get it right out 5.0Liters with a +1 overbore and still keep the rod to stroke ration no worse than other 5L on the market today. So I have been getting all of my ducks in a row so I can get that done as well. I think you guys will be impressed once I am able to focus again and not being torn in so many project directions.

This is one of the builds that I hold a lot of interest in, I was thinking of making a time attack S14 and this seems like it could be a beast with all wheel drive cornering.
I'm probably gunna stay simple though seen as how that would require custom parts that aren't replaceable. Just wanted to say though that I love the build, and we are looking for updates in the near future!

I am sorry my projects aren't moving as quickly as you would like. I would prefer for them to have moved faster as well. These cars are my hobbies, I work on them when I have the time and money. During the winter money is the problem and during the summer time is the problem, there are bursts of progress when the two align perfectly.

Yes I have already done the rear fenders but have to make some small adjustments. Stupid me, build the fenders to be flush BEFORE I got the alignment just needs some tweeks.

Here the car is slammed while I was testing clearances. This is as low as the PBM setup will go without the coilovers even being in the car! No rub anywhere.

This is the car that I am learning on, my s13 with a vh45de swap as well. Learning as I go so I can be faster and do better quality welds on the s14. The final goal with the Kouki is 315's in the rear and 275's up front to have a staggered setup and still be able to run AWD.

Unless I get MUCH more proficient at welding (I really need a MIG with Shielding gas or a TIG) and metal working, I may have to swallow my pride and just build wild fender flares out of glass. My brother owns a UTV roof building company (Mayhem Manufacturing) and is VERY proficient at fabricating things out of fiberglass. Won't know until I get to that step in the Kouki process. Right now I am finishing the s13 up so I can have a daily driver I can love to drive every day. I have BIG plans for the kouki and am not going to cut corners just to get her on the road!

Yep that happened at 6:30 yesterday evening, didn't get home until almost midnight. Had to leave the truck there as I hauled my excavator out there to lift the truck out of the tank. Just got the truck home tonight. Had to replace the hub oil seal and remove all the dirt and flush the wheel bearing. Praying I got all the trash out of it because if it fails a new spindle is nearly $2000 Not including everything else.

Thankfully they said they needed it pumped anyway and less than $180 everything they needed to have it fixed was done.
