Okay, about 10:16 this morning, I walk into target and leave at 10:26 with 2 items: PS2 game NBA Street 2 and an album, Kanye West: "The College Dropout..." The point of this is that album, I gathered that streets wold be worth the 20 bucks it cost me. I had ANOTHER version of college dropout at the end of November, and I thought that it was damn good, but this album is FIRE... They remoed several songs from it, added some and ALL of the ones that remained saw SOME level of alteration, even it if was a minor change or pause placed in the beat, or some obvious complete re-recording of the song. There were instances during this album where I found myself with goosebumps... The FIRST time I sat through it in it's entirety. There have only been THREE albums in my 24.583333 years on this album has this actually taken place... I leave you with this:
IF YOU HAVE 10 BUCKS LEFT TO YOUR NAME, GO TO BEST BUY OR CIRCUIT CITY AND BUY THIS ALBUM, IT'S 10 BUCKS THERE TIL FRIDAY. This is, by far, the best thing I have heard in the 41 days, 1 hour and 2 minutes of this year now, and there is plenty more to my reasoning, but I have to get my ass up and work in the morning. I KNOW someone among us has the retail version of the album and not someon bullshit bootleg album, now discuss amongst yourselves....

That version you downloaded (fucking pirate, DIE!!!) should be 15 tracks long, I had that a few months ago in wait for the retail to come out. I liked what I had in hand even then. I knew that the album having been leaked so early there would have to be some changes made to it before it came out for real. But to repeat what the post said and add a little more to it:

There are now 21 tracks after the addition of like 2 interludes, the removal of several songs and the addition of several songs. The songs that remained on the album from the bootleg have ALL seen some change of some sort, small pauses, things added to the beat, extra verses and background vocals. ALL changes were for the better on an already good album... I have now listened to it like 8 times in the now less than 2 full days with it.

I can't help you, I have had a hamburger AND a real haircut since the last time I listened to a radio station and I quit on beef and the caesar cold turkey in september of 99... I will recognize that seeing the video for Right Thurr, that his career can't get ANY better than "we got" on Ludacris' album...

no its the whole thing i checked it with a track listing of the cd. But anyway, I downloaded the cd....so sue me.
No, I won't sue you for having fucked up musical tastes, I can't imagine any individual that has heard this album and still think that all the songs sound alike. Sure, we all are entitled to our own opinions, but in this case, yours is the wrong one if you think this album is bad in any way shape or form... Testament: Steeles, YOU have been in my bedroom and seen how many CDs I actually own, now take this to the point where I rarely have any album to strike me in such a manner must have something to it that draws my attention/adoration. This, based on the vast amount of genres represented in the collection, MUST be something quite sizeable at that. No shit, I bought this album now 84 hours and 17 minutes ago, it has counted for at least 18 of those hours, while SLEEP has counted for about 24 to this point... Reason? Take into consideration Kanye's anal retentive attention to detail in the production (and he did ALL of the tracks himself) to where pauses in his rhymes are met with matching pauses in the beats BUT they do nothing to ruin the continuity of the song, where MANY producers have failed so many times before. But we all KNOW thatc Kanye is and has been one of the best producers in the game since like 98 and has by far been one of the best selling at that. Let's talk about lyrical content, how much of the bullshit you hear in popular hip hop/rap about drugs, jewelry, guns, cars and rims do you hear in this album? Right... He made a quality album devoid of that shit with only joking (and DAMN witty) references at such content. Bitching about samples? Listen to the album and name ONE sample that was on it without reading the liner notes Other than "Through the wire." Okay, the last point was unfair, because I can do that personally, but ONLY because I own so many CDs and included in the collection are a lot of the old shit he used... Now factor in the automaic soft spot I have on my heart for this man to succeed. Several members on this very site know I was in an acciden on 06/15, in which I ezperienced the EXACT same injuries he did in HIS wreck in 10/02. Yes, all of them, head trauma, broken arm (mine was a shoulder) and, most noticeable, broken Jaw... His was broken in 3 places and required reconstructive surgery, mine was in one place and was more of a simple process, but a broken jaw is 6 weeks with your mouth wired shut...

I have now presented you with objective (supported by irrefutable fact) and subjective (my own fuckin opinion) fact WHY this album is as good as I say it is, now prove me wrong.

they started playing the release version of the kanye/twista joint on the radio.. and holy hell that track is SO much hotter! I went to best buy to buy a copy and they were sold out! fawkers!

right thurr still sucks ass and would be instantly deleted from the playlist as would that new single. holidae inn stays on the strength of a Snoop hook Ludas verse and that one line from chingy about the valet. my car shall be back on the road this weekend and I hope to hell its a long ass time before I have to listen to radio play the same 10 songs over and over afuckinggain. I swear I went to three different stations and heard the SAME SONG ON ALL THREE. I thought I hadnt hit the right button and I was on the same staion unfucking real. god I hate radio.

You people need to start listening to some real music, like tool or the deftones. I hope I'm not the only hard rocker that thinks this. There is music that is so much better than all those main-stream rappers.

And thanks Phlp, I totally agree with you on his cd. I too have the bootleg version, and the release is even that much better (hard to believe)! Plus the fact that he's from Chi town makes him even that much better!

0.02 cents... main stream rap is :ghey: Actually I only like maybe 20% of the stuff that comes out. Underground or main stream. However just because you took so much time to post about it, I will go and download Kanye West: The College Dropout.. Until then I will be blasting Crystal method and waiting for linkin park and N.E.R.D's new cd to come out.

I had an epiphany the other day while listening to Ludacris's new album. As crappy as most radio rap is.. I can no longer blindly hate the artist responsible for it. the absolute BIGGEST musical market right now is the young teenage market. this is the same market that buys all that boy band 98 degrees backstreet boy brittney christina american idol TRL crap. as much as it is about the music its about them making money as well. and if they have to cater to the idiots to make money I really cant fault them for that. it dosent mean they suck as an artist (which still very well may be the case, I just wanna wait befor emaking that decree from now on) just that they are more about money than music. and looking at those type of doller signs.... I can not honestly say I wouldnt do the same damn thing. some of those idiots can actually rap. as witnessed by Chingy's verse on Ludacris's "we got"

B, you are one of my 10 best friends on the planet and chronological time is waht keeps you outta the top 10 dude, no shit... With that, I would think YOU know better. Don't dis american idol, while on one occasion, the properly talented individual has won the COMPETITION, he has fallen behind in the ultimate game. Kelly Clarkson is not as talented as her having won idol would suggest, and Clay Aiken is not near as talented as even his SECOND place finish suggested. I get gift certificates to target from work all the time and use them on CDs most of the time, and last week, I quit playing and BOUGHT Ruben's CD and I was pleasently surprised. I EXPECTED that he would use the novelty of having won American Idol to sell a substandard product based on simple name recognition, but INSTEAD made a quality product that showcased talent and songwriting ability... I actually pulled some trim listening to it in Preston's car (with my system, of course) around some broads at the mall friday, no shit. I am impressed to say the least.

Camp, having had his mixtapes "I'm Good" and "Kon the Louis Vuitton Don" coming into my having had the bootleg version of "College Dropout" almost 2 months early had my opinions of what to expect from the retail version of "The College Dropout" very high, probably unfairly high... The Addendums made to the album in that month and 3 weeks made for a product that I, as a HUGE music (and not only hip-hop) fan could NOT have been prepared for. On the other hand, I share the attention to small details and NOTICED the addition of background vocals, pauses in beats, additional instrumentation to beats, changes in vocal pitch (indicative of re-recording of songs) add-ons to the ends of songs and EVERYTHGING he did to change the album. Now pepper in the 12+ minute "Last Call," where he spits the 3 verses that got him his recording contract with Roc-A-Fella and THEN talks about how he got the deal after being passed over and fronted on BEFORE actually getting the deal on some REALLY witty punchlines and damn good verses. Now that his album has come out, lets not forget that he will be working with my favorite hip hop group, The Roots, and hip hop solo artist, Common (also a Chicago native, mind you) on THEIR forthcoming albums, let's not forget that Kanye has been the best sellign beatmaker in hip hop/rap since early 1999, when he worked with MASE of all people

yes i think this album is now one of my all-time favorites. ive listened to it over and over for the past 2 days (about 6 repeats now). i kinda get what that person said earlier how the songs sound similar though. its probably because you can play the album from start to finish and not have to skip any tracks. plus all of them have this "chill" feel to them.

I like the last song also; it's the one where he starts telling his whole story and how he bacame the producer/rapper that he is now. I'm gonna be looking forward to Kanye's future work. He also has a song out with Dilated Pupils (sp?) that is good as well. I would have pirated his cd too but after I heard a lot of the tracks I decided this guy needs support cuz basically...he's the shit right now. The only other cd i bought recently was OutKast- Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. But, I'm liking the Kanye West more.

u can call it the greatest album, i can call it the shittiest album, neither one of us is probably right, since there probably are shittier albums i've never heard of, and some better albums u ppl never heard of.

as for my musical choices, u are probably wrong.
Not being a copyright asshole, I do not enjoy giving money to big greedy corporations. Therefore i have to download my music, and so far i managed to download about 40 gigs(20gigs of which ride in a car with me every day) (which is what, about 800 albums? which is about $12000... probably more than u ppl ever had enough money for). And listening to all the different crap i've heard, i realized one thing: in MUSIC, i look for MUSIC. Not some guy blubbering about some random shit noone really cares about. I have enough friends doing that.

As a result, i belive rap sux, and can not be considered music whatsoever. now lets see some flames. U guys have been pretty weak so far.

Kreator, ummm ok cuz no one here on zilvia has ever spent $12,000 on anything :loco: good job on downloading that much music, you must have a lot of time in your hands. btw, i dont think 40 gb of music is really anything to brag about these days. i know people who have bought 2 or 3 hard drives just to fill them up with mp3s. i believe in supporting an artist/group if i think their music is great by buying their cds (regardless of how much of that $13-15 they actually get). thats just my $0.02.

oh look, if i put out 5,999 more of my opinions out here on zilvia, i wouldve spent as much money on them as your mp3 collection.

a. He's not talking about going to the club ont his album. You might have been mistaken about 'fitty cent'

b. he's not talking about bitches he want sleep with from the club/or at the club. once again, you might be mistaken him of 'fitty cent'.

Before I open my mouth. What music do you listen to?

nah, keep it shut :) Plus why would i want u to badmouth my music? Its funny how everytime someone says something is crap, the defense tries to go after what that person likes, to prove that what he likes is shit. I'll quote maddox on this one:

It takes one to know one:
Ever call someone a whore only to be countered with the bullet-proof come back: "well it takes one to know one"? You're basically saying "yes, I spread my legs for money, as do you." Good job Ms. Rotten-crotch, you've rebuked nothing. What difference does it make if the person calling you a slut is one as well? You're still a skanky bitch who charges money for hand jobs--and why the hell are you charging for a hand job anyway? Unless all your clients are paralyzed, any prostitute caught charging someone for a hand job should be sued for extortion. That's another reason prostitution should be legal: you can't really sue a prostitute for extortion if prostitution is illegal now can you wise ass?

that's what u basicly are trying to do here, "wise ass". But back to the point. I'm not here to listen to you bitch about my musical tastes. Bitching about someone elses tastes is easy. I know you are wondering why am i picking on the easy role of the bitching person, and making u defend yer shit instead of vice versa? Easy, i'm not the one encouraging everyone to spend their last 10 bux on some album that is so fuuckin GREEAT, and doing it in actually 2 threads. Well, if its that great, prove me wrong, prove that i'm the asshole and that album is that cool. Can't do that? Then keep it shut.

and baka sama, it doesn't necessarily have to be music with no words in it. It just has to have MUSIC in it. I listen to the music from different countries, so some of their singing is in other languages all together.... And music is not considered same set of chords over and over again untill your ears die or your subs blow out. So yeah, that eliminates techno... which i dont listen to :) so keep guessing.

and i guess i could say which music i listen to cuz i dont really give a crap what u ppl say, but since im so sure u'll all jump on me flaming my tastes and get away from my main goal here: watch yer pathetic attempts of proving how great rap is.... which it's not :). So i'll leave it at this. For now.

got sileghty: Ok wait, i'm confused. First u say 40GB requires alot of time, and then u say u know ppl that have filled up way more than that. And u know those people... which makes me think u are one of them.... damn nerds :). At any rate. Whatever it is, i used to dl it overnight 5-10 albums a day. Right now i'm kinda stuck, since i work fulltime, and actually dont have time to setup the dls.

I've probably lost more music to dead Hard drives than you keep on you. MP3/wma player in the car rules. and dont make me go through my old tape collection. chit I could crush children with just one box.

What you call music is probably crap to alot of people. me I'll listen to damn near anything. whens the last time you saw a black man in a japanese sports car riding around lisening to kid rock? im talkin the country sounding new album too. not the old bawitadba stuff either. I'll throw james brown and jimi hendrix in and sing along with the grateful dead.

and if your friends are blubbering about some random shit noone really cares about you need new friends.

why should we flame you if we really dont give a rats ass what you think about rap?

and p.s. U posted your opnions on a message board. There will be people who do not agree with you. I'm one of them. :fawk:

a. what do you listen to?
b. so tell me, so the 'kinda' songs that you listen to. Do they not talk abut the same thing over and over and over?
c. proved me wrong.

Since we are technically speaking about Kanye here let me answer your q's.

a. He's not talking about going to the club ont his album. You might have been mistaken about 'fitty cent'

b. he's not talking about bitches he want sleep with from the club/or at the club. once again, you might be mistaken him of 'fitty cent'.

c. ehhh you are a moron.

umm...
question 1. (c) prove you wrong
question 2. (d) your the moron... Im not talking about kanye west. I said I havent even listened to his album yet, but heard good things about it. I was talking about mainstream rap and what they play on the radio now.

I listen to all types of music... I have albums from N.E.R.D, black eye peas, linkin park, mos def, talib kweli, foo fighters, everclear, outkast, bone thugs, utada hikaru, diesel boy, and various other artist.

And no the music I listen to does not talk about the same things over and over.

ah an educated reply. Well, seriously, i give huge respect to the black people that go to the concerts i go.

At any rate. Alot of people i know think my music is crap. hell, half my coworkers hate it. Do i give a shit? not a chance. Now that's is great u realize that there are different opinions about a type of music and that this particular type of music is not the only type in the world. Too bad all the other people in this thread dont. Otherwise there won't be this thread in the first place.

edit: and of all the bands mentioned so far, almost all are mainstream american bands. Other than the fact that mainstream american music is made for money, american bands have a very WEIRD definition of music. Outright wacky. Expand horizons.

Why do you give black people huge respect for going to concerts you do?? What does race have to do with any of this?

1. Cuz majority of people listening to this stuff are white... so basicly other than respecting them for making a right choice (ofcourse i think this stuff is hte best) i respect them for making that choice while experiencing peer pressure to be into rap/hiphop. Hope u see what im saying.

2. Nobody listens to the same type of music, true. And no, last time i checked this thread wasn't about kanye west. It was about how GREAT his last album was (or not). And note the last sentence in the original post. it says: "discuss".... ! ..... so we are "discussing" :) And as of right now the "discussion" has abruptly ended with people not liking me saying that album sucked... even though i'm just expressing my opinion in a "friendly" discussion. lol

Haha Phlip hates when I get all logical. anyway.

outside the US huh.. hmm well to be honest the whole Euro-pop movement of the 80s kinda scarred me :ugh: so my tastes have stayed pretty much here. I actually have VH1 blocked from my TV cause of all the 80s crap they play. man that stuff was horrible :barf: thats when I started getting into hip hop. heck before that I wore through my vinyl copy of Atomic Dog.. I dunno how my copies of 1999 or Thriller survived. and I still had my Earth Wind and Fire tape in fifth grade. hehe playin it back to back with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC.

The Enya/celtic movement of the early nineties was a little scary at first but that stuff is great to :boink: to :)

Research has shown that on average, the higher the IQ a person is blessed with, the more closed minded they tend to be. Not that all of us geniuses are closed minded, but there is a tendancy in that direction. I for one am generally pretty open minded, but I gotta tell ya....Rap just drives me freaking crazy.

Even if you can...it will still!! They can be some really weird little buggers! NSYNC seems SO masculine compared to some of them. The ones I get a kick out of on JMTV are those BozoZoku bands. They are so funny!!

There's nothing like some good old country-western!!

got sileghty: Ok wait, i'm confused. First u say 40GB requires alot of time, and then u say u know ppl that have filled up way more than that. And u know those people... which makes me think u are one of them.... damn nerds :). At any rate. Whatever it is, i used to dl it overnight 5-10 albums a day. Right now i'm kinda stuck, since i work fulltime, and actually dont have time to setup the dls.

whats so confusing? to me, downloading 40GB of music IS a whole lot of time, but its really nothing to brag about cuz there are a lot of people out there that do the same thing. it would probably take me 5-10 years to get taht much music. because like i said, i believe in supporting an artist or group if i like their music. ok im a nerd?? :loco: u know u shouldnt assume things right? cuz assuming only makes an.....ahh u know how it goes.

I see the thread I started about an album that, in MY subjective opinion, is DAMN good has tunred into a war about musical tastes and statment about race and intelligence differences. I got this album the day it came out and was effected by it, I spoke on it... There have been plenty of other albums in my life that have done so and by FAR, not all of them are hip-hop albums. Take for instance the number of times people look at me in traffic BLASTING Funkadelic's "Hardcore Jollies," or any of the Pink Floyd CDs I have. I listen to a lot of jazz, imagine sitting next to someone in traffic with a well placed together system listening to Ronny Jordan's "A Brighter Day" and I will NEVER forget the number of people I caught LAUGHING in the car next to me as I sit listening to Nirvana's "Nevermind" as loud as I can get it and singing just as loud. Steeles, you can vouch for the fact that I just don't get cold (think of the number of times you've actually seen me wearing a coat) and rarely ride around with my windows up, even in the dead of winter, so nothing about what I am listening to is hidden from the outside world... Back to what I personally like most as far as musical tastes. Kreator, I have and have had FAR more music than that 40Gb you got on that hard drive, most of it is hip hop, so I would call that my favorite genre of music, but it is WRONG of you to make a decision on what is or isn't music based upon what is readily presented to the world. Scratch the surface a bit, listen to Kanye West, hear the music behind the words, Listen to The Roots, realize that ALL the instruments (classical jazz instruments) are played BY them, in realtime at that... You listen to the radio, you hear a lot of bullshit keyboard beats and Lil Jon-type SHIT, produced with an 808, a beat machine you can really buy for less than 500 bucks and is about the size of a calculator, and the resulting product SOUNDS that cheap. What I deem as MUSIC may not be to you, that is MY subjective opinion, just as what YOU deem to be music may not be enjoyable to me, but know that I will not blindly go in and say that an entire genre of music is SHIT just because I don't like it... Trust, there is plenty of stuff I don't listen to, stuff named in this very thread, like the Jpop and Jpunk, Techno, House, Drum n Bass, plenty more that has NO place on my rack. That makes it no less relevant to someone, maybe even you...
Back to the task at hand, I never said that Kanye West has, with this album, created my new favorite album. That is still Buju Banton's "Friends For Life," a reggae album, which actually happens to be the last album that effected me this heavily. I got a burned copy of IT about a month early and waited for it to come out so I could buy it, I have since listened to IT every day for MONTHS. I'm not saying that Kanye has even created my second favorite album, that honor would go to the album that WAS my favorite album before that, which is Common's "One Day It'll All Make Sense." What I have stated here is that Kanye West has made the best album I have heard in the now 7 weeks of this year and that it will likely be one of the best I hear for the rest of it, I invited people to discuss this amongst one another, not to insult other people's musical tastes, race or intelligence.

I never said that anyone is racist for expressing their dislike of rap, I said that the race card was played and shouldn't have been in this case. Nor should the question of anyone's intelligence have been adressed, but damn if it didn't sneak in too... Maybe you are racist, but not because you dislike rap, hell I'm racist, but I don't think it counts because I dislike ALL races for some reason or another, but that is another story...
To answer your next question, I said I like the album... A lot, I give reasons why I like the album, but then some dick decides to generalize on how much "rap makes him sick." Is is inappropriate to disagree? Of course not, I'm sure there are albums that you or any of the other posters here LOVE that I would bother pissing on to put out a fire, but what I would NOT do is take the high and mighty stance as some people seem to do from time to time like someone is less of a human being for drawing enjoyment from it, it is easier to just live my life and ignore it than to waste the time ACTIVELY disliking it. Bottom line is that this is a public forum and we are all entitled to our own opinion, but there are little things like respect that should remain on our minds when we speak to people about our disagreement with their subjective opinion.

I still like Kanyes Album.
Its not mainstream.
If he wasn't with Jay z he wouldn't have been as popular (MAYBE)
Just because people like his music and buy it thus making it popular thus making it streamed out to the main buyers thus making it mainstream

Thus I still love his album. And yes This way with Dialated Peoples is hot!
