So i have a coupe with an s13 Sr, and I have been getting a smell as if the engine was over heating, I'm not sure if it was the smell of burning oil or not. When I'd flip my fans on the smell went away the cooler the engine got. Now today I pull into my friends and i smelled coolant burning right around the exhaust manifold. I have no smoke at all, not losing oil or coolant at any significant rate or at all really. I'm confused as to what this would be.

You could have a small hole on one of the hoses that leaks when the pressure and temp gets up there.

Have you messed with anything around your turbo recently, because the oil and coolant lines that go to your turbo are hard lines that are pretty crappy and prone to breaking and getting bent when you mess with them

maybe oil out of the valve cover gasket?

i did notice a small leak in the lower hose at the radiator but that was when it was sitting in my driveway

nope, i havent touched anything near the turbo. is the stock turbo oil and water cooled?

maybe oil out of the valve cover gasket?

yeah i was thinking that, i ordered a new oem valve cover gasket and thermostat just the other day

test the cooling system with a coolant pressure test set. rent one from auto zone. if the system won't hold pressure then there is a leak some where, and chances are, it will piss or leak fluid from where its leaking. this is a much easier method of diagnosing cooling system issues than turning the engine on, waiting for it to get hot.... etc. chances are when you fix the leak you will see your temps go down because the system is sealed again.
flipping the fans on probably just blew the scent away. have you noticed any oil consumption lately?

I haven't been driving it very much but I don't think the oil level has went down at all. It would make sense that it could be the turbo lines since the smell only seemed to be on the turbo side. if I pressurize it will I see the leak in the turbo lines as well?

yes, it will push coolant out wherever there is a leak. its an easy test that takes about 20 minutes to do. the best part is you can rent one from auto zone and then turn it back in to them and get your money back

well i know how i'm spending my saturday now lol. also, i had to drive my car to work and i went realll easy and tried my best to not make any boost. and i didnt smell anything burning. makes sense that it might be the turbo lines if the turbo isnt getting super hot to burn the oil or coolant

Yeah and if it is stainless Steel braided lines are relatively inexpensive, and they can be difficult to install while your motor is in the car but completely worth it!

the only one that would be hard is the coolant line that fishes behind the block IF he has an s13 SR (well most annoyin out of the group)
I advise when you tackle the turbo line upgrade, get an s14 waterneck too while you at it, and you can cancel out the line that goes to the back of the block.
Or if you dont give a fuck, fish the line thru the back and then bedone wit it and hope to never touch it again :)

could this possibly be my turbo seals? because im not seeing anything leak except a real small spot under my oil pan. but i'm also not smoking at all...
