Hey there,

I swapped in a sr20 from a s14 into my car and realized my oil seals are blown in my turbo since I had oil leaking into my intercooler.

From what I have been reading:

A. It is expensive to rebuild T28 Ball Bearing turbos and pretty much not worth it.

B. Rebuid Kits don't exist for ball bearing turbos. Only for journal bearing

So my question is:

If the seals on my turbo are blown, can I just replace the seals without messing with the bearings. I think the bearings are just in a cartridge..

And if thats possible, where do I get the seals from. Get them from a rebuild kit for a journal bearing turbo?

Thanks for any help.

Ball bearing turbos, are complicated to rebuild. The best solution is buy a replacement CHRA from a Garrett distributor. Then you'll have a brand new turbo for about $350US.

Thats a really great solution. Thanks. I don't have to mess with taking a lot of the internals apart. I have a few questions:

If I choose to change the CHRA, is it possible to and easy enough to change to a larger one and possibly get a bigger housing as well if its worth it? I'm still learning the parts so please bare with me. If someone could post a schematic of a T28BB, that would be helpful lol. I couldn't find one.

Would you be able to recommend me an online Garret distributor that could send me what I need to Canada?

Edit: I was looking for a CHRA online, and I can't find one anywhere close to 350 USD. They are about 550-900 which is not really worth it. I can get a new s15 oem turbo for 900ish

Thanks

You need to send in your CHRA as a core. You can go to Garrett's website and look for distributors whom are close to you.

Getting a new CHRA for a turbo you don't have is kinda cheating the system.
And yeah, without a core just buy a new turbo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the seals on the turbo that prevent the oil from leaking is on the core and therefore the seals cannot be replaced unless I take apart the core? I am assuming the seals between the housing won't be the problem.

Thank you for all your help

Most of the time the seals aren't bad. It is more often a oil drain problem.

Also the Garrett chra exchange is more like $500 plus shipping..but that all depends on the condition of your turbo..if they can't rebuild out it will cost
you alot more

Old thread.. but we can rebuild BB turbos with seals only. It is complicated, it needs to be completely disassembled to replace the seals. I don't recommend one does it themselves. Best left to Pure Turbos. It will need to be cartridge balanced afterwards too.

Seals only BB rebuild - $300 (includes balancing)

Thanks

I can get you a full ball bearing rebuild kit..includes the bearing cartridge, both o-rings, both piston rings (seals), pin (restrictor) for $275 shipped
Then send to anyone for a chra balance for $50
