nx1600 cluster problem help needed

ok i know they wire up to a 91+ but i got a 90 tried it with my friends already wired up harness and it started to smoke from the back were theres a metal plate
is it cuz its a single cam harness? if so can a single cam harness be wired up to the nx harness?
has any one with a 89-90 owner got this to work?
