View Full Version : Limited Slip Question

Ok, I have a 1997 SE, which has a Limited Slip, right? Well I'm wondering what's up. Maybe I just have no idea what an LSD actually does... anyways.
The other day I got stuck in some grass (don't ask why). One front tire and one rear tire were in the grass, up on a curb, like parallel to the curb, and one front/rear tire were down on the street. When I was trying to get out of the grass... the rear tire IN the grass spun and kicked up dirt... but the one on the street just didn't move at all. I thought an LSD would do the opposite thing?!
Also... can someone explain this? I was in a parking lot just messing around. It was wet and freshly paved... and whenever I would try to hit the gas from a standstill to spin out a little, it would just ping at 2K RPMs and the car would kinda jerk a little. But if I had momentum, like 15 MPH, I could just cut the wheels and slide very easily. This is in an AUTO, so that may have something to do with it... I tried putting it into D1, and that didn't do anything different. The only things I could come up with were Traction Control (doesn't have that...), LSD effing up, or not enough power? Someone please shed some light on this.
Thanks,
John

It doesn't have to have an LSD. My car is a 1997 SE w/o LSD. Only vlsd's came with the hicas package. It sounds like you have an open diff. since your one wheel is just turning away on the grass and the other tire not moving. Thats a sure fire way of telling. And for the rain matter. It's all about initial break away. If you just start mashing the gas pedal, it's going to just start spinning because there is to much power put to the wheels for the tires to hold traction in the rain. Now if you gingerly feather the pedal to get it rolling, its a different story. I think that's teh first time I've ever said teh KA has too much power :p

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH A!!!!
Oh man... well in S14's VLSDs were an option, so it was basically determined by the original buyer... On S13's only Hicas cars came with VLSDs. that means Fastbacks, no coupes were hicas.
Anyway go to the FAQ/Archives forum and read my shit about LSD types and info about them...

Please clear this up for me because I'm confused, they didn't offer hicas on s14's, or they just had the option to get the lsd and NOT the hicas? :dunno:

Nah I didn't say "too much power," I said not engough. I wasn't feathering the pedal or anything like that at all... I was just pushing it down... but not SLAMMING it down... if that makes sense. I think if I slammed it down the same would have happened. The wheels didn't spin, the car didn't go... it was just a jerking kinda, and the RPM's pinged.
Thanks for the LSD info though.

S14 in US did NOT come with Hicas. No option/package combo ever had hicas for USDM S14. MOST S14s with LSDs also have ABS. But not all S14s with ABS have VLSDs...

Whoops, yea I should have known that, I confused ABS with Hicas for some reason, thanks for the clarification.

????
How do you plan on telling by peering under your car? Oh, you mean that little orange sticker that SOME S14s have on the diff. The one that falls off a lot? And sometimes was never put on.
