View Full Version : HKS Boost gauge help

I'm having a difficult time getting my old style HKS electronic boost gauge working correctly in my s14 as i don't know how to use the "reset" or "select" functions. The needle is all the way to the left when i turn the car on and revving the engine has no effect.

Back of the boost gauge has a green, yellow, and blue wire which run to the selenoid harness which is plugged into a vaccum line on my RB25 intake mani.

Now, for the part that is confusing me...

The other 4 wires are

- Yellow (light source) Which i have wire correctly
- Black (Ground) Which i have wire correctly
- Red (12v ignition) Which i have wired to the red wire on the ignition switch
- Orange (Constant +12v) which i have wired to the White w/ red stripe

Now, do i have the red and orange setup correctly? Are these the correct wires for the S14 ignition switch. I could have sworn they were.

Tried looking in the FSM for the correct wires coming off of the igntion switch and cannot seem to find the answer to match to what i have done.

Need to know what color is the ignition and which is 12v constant

Boost gauge needle does not move when the car is turned on.

Select and reset button don't do anything. Red light turns on when I hit select

I'm probably a little late, but I would take it out of the car and put it on my bench. To at least verify that it works. I'd find the correct wires in the car later. Just pull out the MM!

You can run ign an 12v con together on the bench. I do this with all used electronics, radios, boost controllers, etc.

You know, I had the multimeter out and was testing it with the gauge and everything I checked turned out fine. I had checked 2 things only while the boost gauge was connected.

I found the correct ignition wires so hooked up the gauge and tested for 12v constant which was perfect at the back of the gauge. Then tested for ignition 12v when turning the key which checked out perfect with 11.96v

The sending unit is hooked up correctly but is not mounted in the engine bay. Would this effect it? Does mounting it ground it?

I truly appreciate the reply.
How should I go about testing it?

The last hks guage I tested was a compound meter, and I just hooked up power, ground and ign. Then connected the sensor to the gauge. The sensor was grounded by the gauge. So I didn't ground it. Soon as I connected the ground the gauge reset to zero, the I added compressed air to the sensor , then used my syringe to pull vacuum.

Oh for sure! So using the compressed air as simulating boost and syringe for vacuum. I will give that a shot and see how it goes! Thanks for the info.

Right now I have power, light, ign, ground wired up. I also have the sensor connected to the back of the gauge, mounted in the engine bay, and vacuum connected to one of the nipples on my RB Greddy IM.

When I turn the ign on the gauge does nothing; no sweep just stays to the very left. Turning the car on does not move the needle either. When I press the select button a little red light on the gauge illuminates. Reset does nothing or I'm just not working it correctly.

Sounds like the sensor is not connected or busted.

That's what I'm thinking! that the sensor is toast. It's hooked up properly.
