View Full Version : SXDevelopments 180SX (SXD180)
Hey Guys/Girls,
I've been a long time reader of this site but never bothered to sign up or post. I've followed some build thread on here and have been quiet impressed by them. I thought I might actually pull my finger out and contribute my own build thread which some of you might find interesting =)
I've been the proud owner of my 95 blacktop 180SX for over 6 years. During this time the car itself, my technical knowledge and my driving skill have come a long way from where they first started. From total noob to having a reasonable idea of whats going on in most areas of the car.
A lot of this knowledge I have due to good advice, experience and friendships formed initially though NSCC (http://www.nissansportscarclub.org) and some through NS (http://www.nissansilvia.com). This is something that has added heavily to the enjoyment I've had from owning my car.
Inspired and by some extreme aussie time attack builds I'm aiming to step the 180 up to the next level over the next period its off the road. Turning it into my vision of what an RPS13 should be. This is something that I've been planning for over 2 years now and cant wait to get finished. I booked in 2 weeks annual leave at the beginning of august 2011 a) to be a world time attack scorch racing groupie B) to help NFI with his WTAC campaign and c) to get the car stripped back to a shell and the build kicked off to a flying start! =)
The end goal is to have a sub 1100kg car making an easy 300rwkw(+) with reasonable response good suspension setup and basic aero package. Still maintaining street registration and have the car fully engineered but also be able to put down some serious times at the track.
I'm planning on doing a brief recap of where the car has come from when I first got it as I've taken well over 4000 photos of all the different mods done from the first weekend I got the car until now. Then updating reasonably regularly.
More updates coming!
Cheers,
Martin.

Here is the original ad posted on SAU. I actually saw the car on carsales and still have the pictures that were posted up there(below) The last picture was taken by me and is of how the engine bay was when I first bought it and picked up the car. Not the duck tape and zip ties where the BOV should be! :P

For the most part what he said about the car was correct and although afew of the mods were incorrect and there were some slight issues mostly it was pretty good.
So the first major thing I did to the car was fix the catch can setup it was plumbed up completely wrong and was pressurising the sump. This meant randomly the crankcase pressure would build up and push a ****load of oil through the turbo seal into the exhaust. Subsequently the car behind would become invisible but not for the right reasons. =)
This first happened the day after I'd bought the car and I was totally freaking out the motor was screwed and I'd sucked a big fat... lemon. But was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was the above issue. You can see the initial way it was done with garden hose like stuff in one of my first posts and how it was fixed it up below.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/fornetP1010035.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/fornetP1010043.jpg
As you can see no more garden hose! =)
The next thing I did afew weeks later was installed a plumb back BOV.
The previous owner had "borrowed a mates" and had to give it back so the car came without one. You can see in the second post I put up the outlet on the hot pipe for it which is duct taped up.
The car got terrible compressor surge. You could feel it let alone hear it. The car was only running 14psi and under hard acceleration you could feel it between gear changes. Boost would drop right down and when you planted your foot in the next gear would take a second or two before it was on full song again.
The GFB plumb back fixed this up and the car performed much better and also sounded a lot better in my opinion. =)

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/fornetP1010092.jpg
Here you can see the new hot pipe I had made to suit the BOV.
Plumbs back nicely into the intake just infront of the compressor housing and has worked a treat to this day. Unfortunately the bonnet skin rubbed some of my black spray job off it =(

Its a build thread champ, sorry if I didnt make it clear enough. That ad was the one I saw before I'd bought the car.

:D, sorry, I missed that.
Heheh
I thought I must have forgotten to put that bit in for a second! =)
The next step was grip which the car had none of. The chromies the car came with had Nankangs on the rear and some ****ty faulkens on the front with no alignment items other than stock adjustments. Ontop of its it was 80mm+ lower than stock so bump steered and skipped like a mofo.
I bought some R33 GTS-T rims to throw on while I waited on the new wheels I'd order to come from japan. Finally some boxes showed up to UAS and I went and got them wrapped in SP Sportmaxx tyres the next day then we put them on!
Looking back I thought these tyres were pretty awesome in terms of grip. Now I have a set in the garage specifically for skidpan days lol

Ah yeh I forget you guys dont get many R33's in the states huh. Over here they're very common. Yeh quiet afew different nissans have them stock I think ceffys had them too.
The chromies saw the chop

The car also saw its first event while waiting for the rims to arrive from Japan. Which was an SAU skidpan day and alot of fun with the whole pan being used for courses. I think this is still the best skidpan day I've been to till this day

If he is already done, then he needs to post the whole damn thing. Chat is clogged up enough with this crap.
OMFG a SR with a BOV!! OH EM GEE some crappy offset wheels came in today!!
Rulez
Build Threads
Almost everyone enjoys building their cars and sharing that experience, as well as checking out others' builds for inspiration. Sadly, far too many users have a tendency to do half-hearted builds and either rarely update or update with trivial progress. In the interest of keeping the Chat forum clear of three hundred 'Install SR, ziptie aero, rattlecan paint' threads, incomplete, or in-progress build threads are not allowed. If you have completed your build, wrangle all those pictures into a post and tell us about it, but make sure the build is finalized. If you insist on having an in-progress build, Premium members have a specialized subforum for that specific purpose.
I may have missed it but are those Buddyclub P1 SF or QF rims?
Its in there man, they're P1's.

P1's, look forward to seeing a better looking kit on it :)
Over the next 12 months I did lots of small jobs on the car, installed some cheapy guages to monitor my temps at the track. Installed new nismo "butt plug" gearknob fitted pinapples and got the wheel alignment under control and made an airbox. Also got out and about enjoying the car! =)

Towards the end of the year my stock T25G decided it had had enough abuse and threw in the towel. The next thing on the cards had been suspension as I hated the tanabe sustec pro coilovers I bought the car with. They were way to stiff and would make the car skip and your ass tense at the sight of a pothole. This had to be pushed back to get the car running with a brand new 2860RS .63 the turbo was thrown in and tuned with the FPR st unigroup as I still only had the stock computer at this stage. Then lots more driving. I took my car to wakefeild for the first time after this clocking a 1:14.7 with no front camber and sportmaxx tyres. I was pretty happy with this for my first time at the track. =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P4230036.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P4230037.jpg
The new turbo was a fair bit bigger than stock but not stupidly.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P5040040-1.jpg
The next items to go into the car were some 740cc Tomei injectors and a PFC. This netted me the same 195rwkw as just putting the turbo on but were were able to get a nice fat mid range out of it as well. So overall the car felt far faster.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00398.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00122.jpg
I also shelled out for the biggest kincrome tool kit I could find in handheld form so it can be lugged to the track if need be to pull things apart as required. =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00553.jpg
So I'd been doing all the reading I could on suspension and what seemed to be working best at the time. I ended up choosing a complete kit that a suspension engineer from sydney was selling. Custom valved bilstein coilovers with selby swaybars front and rear. Also came with noltec adjustable strut tops for the front so I could dial in some camber. These were exactly what I was after and really made a world of difference to the car. No longer did it hop skip and jump over rough surfaces it just soaked everything up. While the bars kept the car feeling stable in the corners.

The car had been off the road for a while with a busted lca so I'd also managed to save up for a Nismo GT Pro TT 1.5 way mechanical diff. This is one of the best mods you can do. It totally transformed the car adding way more grip. We dropped the whole subframe out to make it easier fitting the suspension kit and the diff in/out.

P1's, look forward to seeing a better looking kit on it :)
I actually like the kit excluding the front bar it was always fugly.
New tune agent rear toe arms and camber arms went in to help with the rear alignment. Also picked up an ultra racing 4 point rear strut brace I could notice far less creaking from the chassis in and out of driveways after installing this so it must have been doing something.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00287.jpg
For the next track day I managed to pickup these stock R34GTT rims with some old kumho v70 r-comps on them. This was my first time driving on R-comps and I was totally hooked. The way they break so progressively and let the car move around. It was definitely a feeling I wanted and want to chase more of!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/Martins180.jpg
The car had to head in for an alignment after fitting all the arms.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00300.jpg
I picked up this basic sparco seat for a decent price and ordered some bride rails from an NS trader. These arrived in afew days and I took them down to get modded so they'd fit the seat. I couldnt get over the amount of extra feed back you get as a driver with a fixed back. I had been under the impression that the benefit only came from not having to brace yourself on the door and console! =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P3240324.jpg
A ross tuffbond oversized water pump pulley was fitted to help reduce pump cavitation at high RPM and therefore also temp. My water temps have always remained stable after this was installed. I think they're only like 7% bigger. Looking for a slightly larger one now actually if anyone knows of any? The only ones I've seen are the NAPREC ones and they look quiet expensive.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P3240326.jpg
Finally got some EBC love happening my trusty profec b has never failed me to this day. Not sure if I'll need to upgrade once the car is running more than 20psi.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P3240327.jpg
So the next wave of parts hit, this included a new greddy fmic as we thought the old one might be choking the power abit. A greddy oil cooler kit, nismo power brace, ultra racing front fender braces, new nissan o2 sensor and some whiteline rose jointed sway bar links.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00309.jpg
You can really see why these make a massive difference when you look at what it replaces... When you look at how flimsily the front rad support is attached on an S13 chassis its no wonder it helps either!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00329.jpg
New kit together.

Big gap

Better in black?
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P3270038.jpg
Closeup of the new cooler fitted. Turned out to be a massive headache as the kit was made to sit infront of the radiator
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P4040038.jpg
Whiteline rose jointed swaybar links. These ended up being quite average and very overpriced. The new design is far improved!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/DSC00332.jpg
I couldnt fit these as the fouled on the guards I had on the car =(
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P3300071.jpg
Better economy after this was installed!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P4030029.jpg
This was on of the best purchases I've made. Lets you to all the fundamental data logging nothing fancy though but god is it a help when your looking where to improve! One handy feature is the ability to combine all your best sectors from a session so you know what the car and you are capable of if you can string them together in the same lap.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SANY0144.jpg
The 180's first unexpected large mechanical failure which involved some decent $$ to fix. Driving on the road took off at a medium speed and then shifted into 2nd. As I did this there was a huge bang. It sounded like the engine had fallen out the bottom of the car and I was driving over it. I pulled into the nearest driveway and realised either the clutch or gearbox had let go in spectacular fashion!
It turned out to be the box. Due to the recent power increases and a very unforgiving driver who didn't think the box would break at this power level (oops) =)
Looks fine!?

I took the gearbox to award diff and gear where they rebuilt it for me. I was suprised to find that it was actually an S14 gearbox in the car. While it was all out I thought it best to put a new clutch in. An extreme cushion button was purchased with a custom pressure plate (more pressure). This was good for 250rwkw all day every day (cause I could never want more than that!) while also being nice to drive in traffic.

It all went back together without any major hassles other than doing it all on the garage floor with next to no space! =)
The brakes I had on the car were chewing through pads really quickly so I jumped on the sale of front and rear 33GTR brembos that popped up pretty cheap.
The first step was to strip out the crappy pads they came with and all the hardware involved in holding them in.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P5270029.jpg
After about an hours worth of kero bath scrubbing they came up like this.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P5270033.jpg
Another few hours picking off the flaking clear coat and sanding them back with wet and dry.

Came out like this.

Trimmed back the front rotor stone guards to let out more heat.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P8100089.jpg
After ripping the stencils off the capilers came up looking sweet. I was really happy with them!

I moved to the drum handbrake rear setup. Removing the stone guards neatly while the assembly was still off. There is actually a hole in the standard knuckle to locate these on. Just needed to give it a quick run over with sandpaper and slot them in.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P8110138.jpg
I was able to get them quite neat also without slicing my hand open which is easily done on the razor sharp edges!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/P8110141.jpg
Fitted up some new front end arms and the new brakes all painted up. I got some new strut tops for the front which were lower profile giving me more front travel. I sourced a Z32 master brand new for the bigger brakes which cost me an arm and a leg. Along with Nismo S14 LCAS's for improved track and some tune agent tie rod ends and caster arms. =( I also ordered some new rims!
The new haul.

def tuned in to his one! thats a lucky 180 to be getting all those gifts....spoiling the little bastard!
I finally shelled out for some bigger cams and valve springs I picked them up in a kit for a decent price. Andrew came around and I helped him with the install. We had to rig up the air compressor to hold the valves up while we had the retainers out. Worked a treat though. I wish I had of installed the cam gear aswell though because the timing on the greddy cams seems to be slightly out and cost me more bottom end power than they really should have.

I also got my hands on some corner weight scales and learned how to use them. I could feel the difference afterwards as well the car felt much better with just the driver in it.

The biggest thing was getting some avs track wheels doing a dogey spray can job on them and fitting up a set of brand new 235/45/17 RE55S tyres. These were unreal to drive on compared to anything else I'd driven on. The colour was pretty damn bright and paintjob shitty. There was an equal amount of lovers and haters :P

Keep it up man!, i just got doing the same thing to mine, you changing the subframe bushings? they make a big difference, go with part shop max solid , spl solids or energy suspension polyurethane! Good work!
New rims arrived courtesy of Jesse Streeter. Works XT7's 17x9+17 and 17x9+28 filled the guards nicely. Quiet aggressive on the front though. I also bought a dry cell battery and relocated it to the boot for better weight distribution as well as clearing up some space in the engine bay.

The car was becoming more and more track orientated so I decided to strip out the interior and sound deadening as the start of a reasonably comprehensive weight loss scheme. =)
After pulling out the seat I had to laugh at the 3x stereo cables installed in the car. It looked like it'd been done afew times and knowone had ever bothered to pull out the old wiring they'd just started again.

1148 kilograms = 2 530.90677 pounds btw =)
Before the upcoming NSCC day I ditched the old rotors which came with the brakes and fitted some new stoptech slotted two piece curved vein fronts and dba4000 slotted rears. The car also got treated to a reconditioning of the steering rack (it had developed some play) and some new upgraded tein rods/rod ends. I also shelled out for a new set of the whiteline ball joints. These worked much better and are sealed OEM style so should last alot longer too. I also ordered some new track rims while I was at it.

New new track rims I'd bought finally arrived. 17x9+22 RPF01's at only 7.2kg per rim they're a very light and well priced option. I fitted up the RE55's for the upcoming track day. I also got my rocker cover powder coated. I'd actually bought another one and got it done so I could just swap it over and not have to leave the car with nothing on it for a week. It came out really nicely I'd actually not seen any other cars with this at the time. There are quiet afew SR20 covers I've seen around with this now. =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SANY0064.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/newrockercover.jpg
I also ordered an S15 OEM oil cap. These are lighter than all the other aftermarket ones and dont tighten up when the rocker cover gets hot or cold like I've had with the stock S13 oil cap and some of the aftermarket ones.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SANY0043_1.jpg

Used some red nissan gasket goo and fitted a new rocker cover gasket before we put it on.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SANY0019.jpg
The writing had the powder coating shaved off leaving the fresh alloy. Makes it look brand new imo. Pity about the rest of the engine bay :P
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SANY0030.jpg
I bought new washers for the rocker cover aswell. These ended up being some stupidly expensive price well over $100 from nissan australia. I wouldn't have ordered them had I realised. But they did look nice anyhow.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/SANY0065.jpg
Purchased a new Cusco strut brace to replace the old one which was looking rather dated and cruddy. Also the older bar was just one round section between the towers. This flat tube in theory should provide slightly more rigidity. Probably never tell the difference though. =)

World time attack 2010 came around I had my car in the NSCC club display not that I really though it was show car worthy but we got a good club deal and it was a nice close place to park. A car that really changed my perception of what a 180SX could and should be was Wanyes 180. This thing had some serious styling and is hell fast. I was and still are blown away by the attention to detail on both this and later his brothers car, serious dedication to finish I've not seen matched on any other cars in the JDM scene here.
Had had the NSCC day the weekend before. This was the first superlap under the WTAC banner with all the international cars. Was an awesome event! I cant wait for this years!!

Hmmm whats with you youtube tags comes up with all the embed code in the post and then doesn't actually load it?? I had a look in the faq for youtube stuff and couldnt see anything. Hmmm if someone knows what I'm doing wrong can you let me know please? I've got some more youtube vids coming.
I kept having issues with the gauges I'd bought because in the daytime you could hardly see them due to reflection. The oil pressure gauge being near useless cause you couldn't look at it while driving. So I shelled out for a defi link unit and 60mm boost gauge. This let me set parameters which if anything goes outside of it sets an alarm going. Also you can record several minutes of replay and record your peak values. The alarm and peak values are very handy. Especially when setting up your boost controller or flat out on the track. You can concentrate on driving and know you dont have to check any temps unless it screams at you.
The sensor kits I got were oil temp, speed, revs, oil pressure and water temp.

This is some in car of the next track day I made it too. There was so much more left in the car and I was driving reasonably conservatively due to brake locking issues and having tried too hard in the morning. The next session pissed down rain which was fun in itself but not helping me lower my pb at all :P Quickest lap in here shows as 109.2 the official timing had it as 109.16. I haven't had a chance in my car to go back to wakefield since.

Here was the last trackday I did in the car before it was pulled off the road. The bottom end finally gave up the ghost on the way home from this trackday after 170,000km and the last 40odd thousand of it making 200ish rwkw
This was my first and so far only time driving eastern creek. Awesome track really forces you to respect turn one or tears are inevitable :P

So I thought I'd post up some pics of cars which have been a big influence on my ideas and slightly pimp the other two SXD cars both which fall into that category anyhow. =) We'll get around to doing a build thread on nfi's car soon too (SXDS15) when we get time. hahahahaha.. he started this build thread at 930 am in the morning, posted like the first tenth of his build so far, and then less than 24 hours later you are calling for his head?? it takes a while to actually post up and make a build thread dude, so the fact that he hasnt completely posted it up inside of 24 hours is a bit harsh dont you think??
give him some time before you jump all over his nuts..
edit - i just realised since he has continued to update the build thread you havent come in and been a dick about it anymore, so i assume you realise your "stock Sr with a bov and shitty offset wheels" comment is null and void..

So I've finally started "the build" in the gaps when nfi's car was off getting tuned or we were waiting for something to be done before we could start on the next thing.
Took some quick shots of the car before I started but lighting was bad and the workshop had **** everywhere in the lead up to WTAC so space was limited.

The first task was to remove the body kit to allow easier access to the rest of the car for strippage and so it doesn't get damaged during the process. At this stage the same kit + a new front bar was going back on the car as funding wouldnt stretch enough to allow me the luxury of a wide body. This has since changed as the whole project as kinda got bigger and bigger and has now turned into a no holes barred full house build. :P

The front guards turned out to be rather difficult to get off due to the sills being crushed over ontop of them at the base. The side skirts required some serious massaging and a heat gun to get off as whoever fitted them had bought a tube of sikaflex and gone to town like a mofo! After I'd pulled them off we discovered that the sill panel on the passenger side had been giving sound rough love too. Another thing was added to the list of "to be fixed"
Next I removed all the intake piping, afm and air box.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_4988.jpg
The next step was to drop all the fluids from the car, diff, gearbox, coolant, engine oil. Then I removed the radiator to make space for the engine/gearbox to come out in once piece. The gearbox crossmember, engine mounts, wiring looms and fuel lines all had to be disconnected first.

The motor came out without any issues. You can balance it perfectly with the chain off these two points and with two people it was piss easy.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5396.jpg
The engine bay already starts to look pretty bare and you realise these is actually a tonne of space in there compared to alot of cars.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5399.jpg
The next step was to remove the gearbox.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5403.jpg
Then the clutch pressure plate, clutch plate and flywheel all of which were in tip top shape having only just been fitted 6 months earlier.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5412.jpg
Then we put the engine on the new engine stand (thanks nfi) and tipped it over to empty out as much coolant as possible.

More coming soon.

holy dick this is gonna be awesome!
Thanks for the kind words guys glad your enjoying the thread. Haters will always be out there, in the end I'm trying to build my ultimate 180SX not anyone elses so as long as I'm happy with it I cant really go wrong! =)
Engine out was the easy part. Stripping the rest has been far more time consuming!
Went over to the workshop one night and stripped some stuff off the motor aswell as starting to scrub/degrease it. Its crazy how heavy the power steering bracket and alternator bracket are. They're made from chunky cast iron and probably weigh the best part of a kilo each just for the brackets alone. I ordered a naprec power steering bracket and we're looking at making a new lighter alternator one aswell.
The drivers side engine mount was actually loose as well which would have been letting the motor flop around much more than it usually would.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5464.jpg
The front half of the loom (engine bay and dash) out its crazy how big it is its around 1.5x the length of the car not including the back section. Will be able to loose a reasonable amount of weight out of this in the rewire.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5425.jpg
It really was very time consuming to get it to this point. The dash was rather involved/time consuming to pull out as was the loom from the interior. It does all come out in one piece though its just rather fiddly. Pretty excited in that everything I'm touching on looks pretty easy to improve on in terms of simplicity and weight. I should have it 100% stripped by the end of tomorrow and be able to get stuck into cleaning the whole interior/exterior. I cant wait to look at it and not feel dirty. =)

I'd put an extra day into stripping the car and got basically everything out of the engine bay and interior bar the essentials to keep it rolling.
boxhead helped me remove the remainder of the sound deadening tar. It was on the sides of the tunnel, under the dash and behind the firewall mat nether of which had ever been out of the car before. While I've owned it anyhow.

Good build, can't wait to see more update.
Tuesday was a mission out to pickup steel. We're planning on making a chassis stand so the car can roll around the garage with no subframes in it for awhile.
Here some pics of what I got upto next anyhow.

The other side is shivering in its welds ready for tomorrows linaging! :P
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_5534.jpg
Got a fair bit done that weekend. I spent about 9-10 hours chipping away at things on Saturday afternoon/evening. I got the other side of the "parcel shelf" out and the seat belt mounting point. Along with the spare tyre bracket in the tyre well. I also cleaned up the passenger side of the tunnel from all the tar and removed 90% of the seam sealer along that join in the floor on that side.
Sunday arvo wheats and nfi came over and helped me sort out all the boxes of crap and they got stuck into the seam sealer from the rear towers down to the rear passengers foot wells on both sides. Damn the air die cutter is loud my neighbors will have no love! Thanks for the help too guys! :)
Anyhoo some pics!
Looks far tidier in the rear without the side parts in I think. Cars looking very bare now! :)

Very nice...wanna see that sr22 kit fired up! For saving weight just cut out the whole spare tire hole and weld a sheet of aluminum over ir.

Thanks man, yeh I cant wait to hear it screaming either! =)
The car will still be street driven. I've had friends who have done this it makes it so much louder in cabin I've decided its not worth cutting it out. Also its a nice little whole to keep my tool bag in... =)
I just thought you were going all out cause you removed the supports behind the rear suspension towers, you might want to stiffen that part back up. If you put a cage in it then you will be able too.
I'd halted work until this point because the car needed to be weather proof but things have now changed and the cage will all be made under cover. I'd settled on a cage design which were are a few minor points still to be decided on. The cage will come in way over what I budgeted for but the end result should be the best possible design for rigidity while still maintaining my street registration. Which is a limitation but I enjoy my weekend drives too much to give them up.
Some pics =)
Some serious work will be happening here for the cage. One of the most exciting things that I'm looking forward to seeing most is the difference it makes once driving the car in anger :)

Yup fuck the haters. They aint payin a penny to the build so their opinions means nothing.
i would suggest that you minues well go and get yourself a z32 tranny and conversion kit and run a z32 tranny so it can handle alot of abuse and not worry ... i mean it can still break but wont break as easily as an SR tranny :). Very nice tomei kit. Shit aint cheap at all. That 180sx is getting MAD love haha.
Interested to see what your new turbo setup your gonna run to take advantage of the built bottom end.
P.S: Gunk those tails n get some kouki taillights :). If you like em then thats all you, but just a suggestion haha :0

Building a car bud, changed the title for you... :)
Good to see a build that isn't 25% performance, 75% fitment. Keep it up
The car got picked up to get the cage done. Was pretty excited and nevous to see the results and if it'd turn out like I hoped it would. Headed over and checking it out a few times to get progress shots. I was told I should be able to pick it up on/before the next weekend all going well! =D
Its looking very bare now without the windscreen in. I was recommended a glass guy to get my rear quarter windows out without cracking them (very tricky apparently) by a mate. They should have been taken out today so I'll bring them home for safe keeping when I go to checkout the progress.

On the Saturday afternoon we were over at the workshop doing some bits and pieces on two other cars. I decided to pull the intake manifold off as its one less thing to worry about later on. Pulled the whole thing off in once piece. I'm strongly considering deleting the heater core from inside the cabin and running an alternative option. This would mean I can remove all the heater lines from under the manifold in the second picture here. Its a total shit fight under there and its better than standard already. You can see where I'd previously removed the coolant line to the standard throttle body and looped it back into itself. At this stage I was still planning on keeping the standard S13 intake plenum and throttle body.

On the Sunday afternoon I decided to drain the fuel tank and stick the 25 odd liters I pulled out in the daily. I found an old fuel flap in the bottom of the tank. God knows how long its been knocking around in there! =) The tank scrubbed up quiet well I think I might polish the bottom just before it goes back in so it looks schmick. We may also paint it I havent decided yet. =)

people always suggest ditching the AC and heater (core and lines) and then.... what is the solution? you suggested using an alternative.
to-date, i have not seen any good solutions for AC or heater.. other than OEM. feel free to share and discuss, but i have a feeling that this is hardly a car that will need ac or heat.

I have nooooo need for A/C at all. I'm going to be running some small 12volt heaters + fans mainly for demisting but should also provide a small amount of heat for winter. I live in Sydney Australia though so we're lucky if we see more than handful of days below 0 degrees celsius a year. Having no dash matt on the firewall and the exhaust running reasonably tight should provide more heat than I'd like :P
Planning on running some of the reflective/adhesive heat pannels on the outside of the panels in these places though.

Thanks man, awesome the more time attack S series cars the better I say! =)
Yeh times are not great here either at the moment everything is starting to slow down abit. Still we're lucky to be in pretty good position financially in Aus compared to the rest of the world!
I went over and had a look at the progress afew days later and the cage was nearing finished. The cross in the rear and boxes for main hoop and front legs still need to be completed. There will be one cross in the main hoop also. Some things are still only tacked in so still need to be welded properly though. The main hoop is as tight as possible while still having the door crosses removable.
I was also waiting on some pre-fab items to arrive for the engine bay that would hopefully arrive sooner rather than later cause they'd be done at the same shop. I'd like to avoid shipping the car home just to pay to go back again in a weeks time.
Some pictures anyhow!

Was pretty happy with it so far! =)
I went and checked out the finished cage another two days later. I'm really happy with the result its very close to how I had it pictured in my head. The splice joints look really neat and its not stupidly hard to remove them but not easy either. I'd much rather have them more time consuming to remove and provide some rigidity though which I think these will.
The car was supposed to be towed over tomorrow by get it "CAMEL TOW Towing" lol. I've asked him to cancel the job if its raining though as I couldnt afford to get everything wet with all the bare metal and no windscreen. Anyhow some pictures... keen to see what you guys think of it its abit compromised but I think its the best weight/function I could achieve.

I couldnt wait to get stuck into it and clean up all the welds with the linager along with the seam welding prep! I might have to buy some looser fitting jeans or hit the treadmill if I plan on getting in and out of it with the door bars in though lol. =)
I didnt get the car back yet due to the rain all weekend and it turned out to rain every time we tried the week after as well. It was supposed to come home that sat morning but one of the people involved had a family emergency and it didnt happen. =(
That Sunday I went over and spent some time with the guys pulling down my engine accessories, exhaust manifold and turbo off the egine. The engine is starting to look pretty bare now. We pulled the whole alloy sump pan off the bottom of the motor aswell to have a look and feel the rods.
There is quite abit of lateral movement in all of them especially cylinder 2 not sure how normal this is? The inside of my engine makes me think it never got loved that much by its some of its previous owners in terms of oil changes. I was looking forward to geting it back and getting some work done finishing up the cage and pulling the subframes out!

Good to hear it!:snoop::)
So the car was stuck at the cage builders for a week and a half cause either I wasnt able to be home to take delivery, the towy couldn't do it or it was pissing down rain. These not so little goodies turned up at the crack of dawn Tuesday. Now at least cause these arrived on time I can get them installed while the car is still there and not have to tow it back again.
These will eliminate the low point in the front arches (if I ever want to run it super low) and give me more room for Xlarge rubber under the front without any lock issues. Conveniently they also at the same time replace the shitty sections in front of my wheel arches full of badly done holes for IC piping. I ordered them without the bead, just prefer the smooth look. ;)

Dropped the front tubs off but holdups with other jobs ment they weren't able to be started on till later that weekend. They were done by Monday ready to be picked up. Pretty happy with the fitment they basically dropped straight in when the standard tub was cut out. There is a small area where the top of the kelway tub meets the tower could have been slightly longer for a better fit. Overall they're excellent though very happy with them!

Couldnt wait to get it all back and pull the subframes out got some things planned for them too. =)
Finally got the car back a week later after the towy being almost 2 hours late and making me late for work. Grrr
Very happy with how the tubs have turned out. I've decided to swap to an S15 rear subframe for the improved geometry. This will meant selling the arms I have now and the new S13 Nismo LCA's I had to put in. I also needed to source a nice straight subframe and S15 diff to put my nismo mechanical center into.
I managed to get these Items through some other NSCC members selling them off.
Also needed to find a 100x100 chunk of wood so I can get the car high enough to get on the chassis frame. The 500mm lift on the bluepoint jack isn't enough! :P

Interesting man, several thousand people have looked at this across several forums your the first to comment on the welding being "sloppy". Which parts are you referring too or everythings not up to your standards?
Everything to this point was still mig welded while its not art I was very happy with how they turned out especially after being cleaned up. Maybe I'm biased though?
Spent some time working on the car when I got it back. I got stuck into cleaning up the cage welds starting in the engine bay. I was aiming to have the whole cage done by the end of next weekend and then I'll start working on the seam prep for some spot welding I had planned.

Here is the chassis stand we made so I can work on it and move it around easily without the subframes in it. They'll need to be removed to complete the chassis prep later on.

Finally finished off the cage welding cleanup it might not look like much but there was a conservative 15 hours worth of air tooling to get it to this state. Probably taken the best part of a kilo off the car too judging by how much metal dust came out of the vacuum bag and off the floor when I was finished! :P
I also cleaned all the tar off the beaver tail that used to seal the tail lights to the body. Filling in the gaps doing this while giving the compressor a chance to cool down worked out well... =)
This was also the first time I've tried removing the front part of the cage. It actually came out without many hassles at all. Its a bit like a skill tester though working out the right angles to get it out on without belting anything! :P
This week I start on cleaning and picking all the seams in the car in prep for spot welding. The plan was to start in the front and work backwards doing everything I can reach from ontop. Then later put the car on the chassis stands drop the subframes and repeat but underneath. I still needed to finish off the cage front floor box near the drivers foot but cannot get in there without moving the car. So I'd get to that a bit later... Just tried to do things systematically so I didnt start spot fires everywhere and get nothing in particular finished. I find it much more satisfying to get to the end of the day and have one task complete rather than two half done :P
Afew bits of wire flew off the wire wheel today and stuck in the front of my shin. Good reminder on why you wear safety goggles as it could have just as easily been my eyeball without them! :P

not saying it to be mean, just saying it to say it. if you're happy with the end-result, thats all that matters. im just saying that if you compare this:
#/f/builds-builds-only/371477-austins-240-build.html
with thread on your welds, its not the same caliber. but i'll admit, the guy in the other thread has very high/advanced welding skills. honestly, i think we could all benefit from learning from his thread (me included).
So I got abit done the next week/weekend but not as much as I'd hoped. The top half of the engine bay seam cleaning is 80% done. I wire brushed all the windscreen sikaflex and cleaned up the seam around there too. This made a god awful mess everywhere though!
My S15 subframe weld on kit showed up from Japan as well Monday morning. Its basically exactly what I expected it to be. Looks like it will make a fairly big difference to the overall strength of the frame too. =)
I've also ordered suspension arms. :D

So the kit I'd ordered finally arrived which was sweet. We picked it up from UAS who were kind enough to accept delivery for me. Luckily a mate of mine, Sip was available with the SP20 for front bar and guard transport as it would not have fit in the other car.
We did a trail fit, I was happy with the front bar and the rear guards but was pretty unhappy with the front guards. They're not nearly big enough for what I was after. On top of that one of the corners was cracked in transit. =( Basically they just were not what I was looking for so it was back to the drawing board for new fronts.
The rear guards on the other hand are quiet good fit and are massive. There are some inconsistencies with them though which will require some time and effort to fix but I couldnt find any other rears I liked more than these for how I'm planning to fit them. These will look super phat =) We also did a test fit of my seat which fits perfectly but is somewhat challenging to get in and out of with the door bars in but thats all part of the fun eh. lol :P
The front bar should work well with the splitter etc that will be made later on too but I'm going to modify it slightly. We'll get to that further down the track though. :)
Some time was spent on the Sunday cleaning seams the upper half of the engine bay is mostly complete now and a good portion of the interior has been cleaned up. I hope to have the rest of the interior done by the weekend so I can start underneath the car. No pics of this though I was far to fixated on the kit :P

Deffinently subscribing to this.
Got a fair amount of work done the following weekend. I got the car up on the stands, its easy to move around which is very handy. Also very easy to sit upright under the car which made it alot easier to work under there.
The front and rear subframes are now removed the car is looking pretty damn bare right now! I attacked the standard front tow hooks with the 9" grinder as they're no longer needed. God damn the steal they use for these is beast. I haven't finished it yet thought I'd spare the neighbors for a bit of a break after ages grinding on one side alone. I wasn't really happy with the marks it left but it should cleanup ok later.
I could only work on the outside of the car as it stood as the frame needs some slight modding to fit under the rails rather than the sills. I didn't want to be hoping in and out of it until it was abit more secure...
Anyhow, some pics.

The next few weeks were really flat out I'd spent a good 30 hours a week on the rest of the spot welding prep. The chassis is all but ready to go. I've removed both front tow hooks and also the rear tow hook. The front bonnet latch bracket has also been taken off (not in the pictures). Lockable pins will replace this and also allow for better airflow to the radiator/fmic.
The doors and hatch need to be removed before the shell gets taken away for welding next weekend.
The new guards are on their way over from japan currently. Should arrive this week sometime with any luck! New suspension arms are also on their way. Picked up some new longer studs and a nismo radiator cap.
Anyhow some pics of the car from this stage.

Rear toe hook delete. Its unuseable with the rear bar on anyways so dead weight.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6582.jpg
So the guards arrived afew days after this with the courier woke me up with repeated doorbell smashings :P
I was very keen to open them up and check for damage cause they're obviously fiberglass and very easy to harm in transit. Especially after the other guards turned up damaged. They made it in one piece though whooohooo! :D
I didnt realise when I ordered them but they actually have koguchi power in the mould on the top of the guards. Not sure if I like this or not but it should be pretty easy to block out of the surface anyhow if I decide to. Unfortunately there was no subframe in at that point so I couldn't do any test fitment but visually they're much larger already.
1x sticker as well which will be going straight on the toolbox. :)
Very happy with the fit, finish and overall quality of these guards they should look awesome as part of the finished product! (imho) Also dont think I've seen them on any other cars before in person which is kinda cool. :P

Here are some pics of all the SPL gear that turned up. Thanks to Peter from JDM Obsession. I placed the order via email, got a quote, paid the dollars and it turned up at my front door a few weeks later. :D
Very happy with the quality of the gear and the service!
Some photos.
Xmas came early. =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6615.jpg
The boxes are strictly business. No money wasted on pretty packaging.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6616.jpg
Solid rear subframe bushings all off the gear came with detailed instructions with torque settings for things to be done up and and explaining different settings if the item has them. These solid bushes while allowing me to fit an S14/15 subframe into an S13 chassis, also allow for several different roll center adjustments. I didn't realise this when I ordered them pretty cool though!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6617.jpg
Ball bearing knuckle bushes. Will let me bin the urethane ones I have in my knuckles now which are chronically bad for binding up. Which is quite detrimental to handling and feel.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6619.jpg
SPL Tie rods these can be ordered to suit larger aftermarket tie rods or stock ones. They also allow me to adjust bump steer by spacing up and down the tie rod angles so the arch matches the LCA's arch better.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6620.jpg" />
Rear toe arms nice and strong come with a kink in them for extra clearance on super low cars (might be useful to me further down the track)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6621.jpg
They dont look that thick in the photos but put my finger in the shot for some scale. :P
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6622.jpg
Traction arms just to match the others. These will help tune out bump steer in the rear when everything is set up.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6623.jpg
S14 rear camber arms again with the angle added for extra clearance and moving to a half moon style so some extra weight saving over the full moon S13 style upper arms.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6624.jpg
Front castor rods thick as f**k! Even come with two small threads in the body of them and two small bolts to mount your brake air deflectors to them.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6625.jpg
I'll be using all this gear along with Nismo S14 LCA's and modified stock S15 rear LCA's as my suspension arms cant wait to get it all on! =)
I cant wait to see what SPL's new adjustable LCA's look like they're not out yet though.
More soon!
Mucking around with the new suspension parts tonight. Pulled out the new tie rods and had a play around with them put them together with the suggested setting for most cars with standard knuckles. Also took some detailed photos with a 20c piece for some scale to show just how thick they are.
The castor rods are I think they're made form billet alloy with stainless rod ends and titanium fittings. The others arms are steel slightly thinner with the same fittings.

That's some seriously well done production in that edit!
That's some seriously well done production in that edit!
Your not wrong we're pretty happy with how it turned out!
I went up to bunnings afew days later and bought two saw horses. I've wrapped them with tape and some old foam I had to rest the doors on. Worked quite well.
I weighed one of the doors with no mirror or door trim and no speaker in it. This was only on some $10 dodgey bathroom scales but it came in at 27kg so realistically they're easily 30kg-35kg each to begin with. I've also unbolted the hatch ready to be taken off. Once the gas struts were unhooked it starts to come to light just how heavy these hatches are! I have to try to lift the bastard and its still pivoting off the hinges!
My best guess is this thing is going to weigh in around the 30kg+ mark.
Another package arrived containing some new genuine nissan typex lights and an apexi metal head gasket for the new motor. The lights look shmick as and are going to be set off by the colour I have planned. =)
Fingers crossed the weather holds out tomorrow. If it does the bare shell is going for a trailer ride! =)

The next day I had off didnt go as planned exactly. I got a fair amount of work done on the car though. Both doors are now off. It took me a good solid hour of cleaning with multiple rags to get the tar that they glue on the plastic under the door trims on with off one door. This shit is nasty! I went through a good 300ml of prepsol just on the one door!
I pulled the power steering rack off the front cross member also as the cross member needed to be refitted to tie the shell down when we trailer it.
Moving the car failed though as the trailer we'd planned to use turned out to have lapsed rego! Doh. Booked it in to have another go on the following Saturday morning, weather permitting!
Can anyone feel a draft from somewhere? :P

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6673.jpg
Front cross member refitted. Believe it or not this has actually had a good dose of degreaser and afew rags thrown at it already. Needs the full kero bath to get it really clean.

More soon!
So finally a more detailed update. The second half of my package arrived from overseas with some new goodies for the build or just the car in general. Also with the help of 7 mates (thanks boys!) we managed to get the car on the trailer and off again.
I recorded the whole thing on my video camera but need some software capable of speeding the footage up 10 fold otherwise the 90mins of footage will bore everyone to death windows movie maker cant do this doh!

Welding started the next day couldnt wait to get stuck into it. I spent all arvo over at the workshop cleaning off the surface rust ready to go!
More soon.
So the welding is well under way pretty happy with how the TIG is coming out its very neat compaired to some cars you see and will only require minimal cleanup. We will still have to MIG some areas as the TIG is crappy at filling holes/gaps.
Trying to stay ahead of Andrew with the prep so he isnt waiting on me. So far so good!
Couldnt wait to go and get stuck into it again. Also ordered a carbon hatch on NS which I ended up freaking out abit over as I'd sent the guy my money and didnt get the Item for ages longer than was originally talked about.
Hard to get good shots and avoid welding flash! :P

More soon!
I put some more hours into the car over the xmas period. We didnt get a chance to do much more welding at this point but I'd cleaned up the areas that were already done. Some in part and some ready to be primed. Also have removed 3 out of the 4 seat belt mounts with the linager in the rear. We tryed a spot weld drill bit and after drilling a hole straight through the floor decided to return the the linager. :P
The weekend following it would get another 10 hours plus from me alone to get it moving more.
Also needed to go and pickup the new S15 subframe I'd sourced and get moving on that.
Some pics!
Given some wirebrush to take off the (most) of the burnt paint and ****ness.

The hatch I'd ordered turned up undamaged just after this. I still didnt hear anything back from the guy though. I guess he was just lazy with sending it. Cant wait to test fit hopefully the fit is reasonable!
Weighs in at 4.5kg the finish looks quiet good there are some small imperfections but this hatch came at the fraction of the cost of others from overseas so I cant complain too much.
The hard part will be getting it to the shop without damaging it. For a trial fit it and see how close it is. (fingers crossed its pretty good)
Some shots of the hatch.

I can probably cut abit of weight out of it with a hole saw without losing much strength. I hope to have it at 4kg before it goes onto the car.

excellent build man, glad to see you went with spl parts. i've got the same rear bushings to run an s14 subframe in my s13 and they're awesome. their gear is top notch and you won't regret it.
Brought in the new year had an awesome night and a mad view of the fireworks! :P

After this I picked up the S15 subframe and dash from a mate (thanks Pat). They both fitted in the back of the daily with the seats all folded down no probs. I cant decide whether to use this dash or go with the S13 one as I do like both for different reasons. I have the luxury of either now though. The end goal is to make a custom S13 dash from carbon but there is alot of time involved in doing that to a standard I'm happy with so I'll most probably be goin with the S15 one in the mean time.
I started working on the subframe removing all the stock nissan welding crud and excess blobbage there is everywhere on them. The end result should be a super smooth finish once its all painted up.
I also need to source some urethane diff bushes and go pickup a special tool which supposedly makes removing the subframe bushes a piece of piss.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6782.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6784.jpg
This is the airbag assembly as is surprisingly heavy (around 8kg)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6785.jpg
These will be replaced with the SPL offset bushes posted earlier.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6786.jpg
This is why your better off with stock bushes instead of urethane ones. These were so stiff you had to stand on them to get the arms to move! The new setup will have all rose jointed + stock style bushes in the LCA's so binding like this shouldn't be an issue.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6787.jpg
Top half attacked with the linager. You can see just how much crap they have on them from factory from all the shiny bits. =)

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6795.jpg

Anyhow an update on what was working on the next few days which was the rear subframe still. I've finished linaging off off the factory welding blobbage now. Spent the better part of a whole day removing the subframe bushes. Finally got them out though with some help from Tim and Andrew, cheers!
The next day I went through the weld on subframe kit I got and worked out where all the bits go. You can see how this will make a difference to the strength of the frame but gusseting just about everything. The next step is tracing out where they go and cleaning off all the paint of the frame +bits to be welded.
Pics.
Core drill
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6796.jpg
We ended up having much more sucess with the others by first drilling out the rubber with a 10mm drill bit then using the core drill with water and wd40 for lubeness.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6797.jpg
First one took the same amount of time as the other three did total cause we didnt drill it first. Also mad way more mess cause of all the heat.

Deleted a stock tab/bracket welded onto the subframe too as we wont need it anymore.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_6843.jpg
More updates next week.
So the following morning Andrew and I used the frankentool to squeeze the new offset billet alloy bushes into the frame after working out which way to out them in. This required a frapper drilling out the insides of the holes to clean off burrs and excess metal so they'd slide in. It also required us to linage the hard tapered edge off the bushes themselves.
I also wire brushed the new welded on guessets which were done the day before. I'll be cleaning up the welds with the later.
The next step was to test fit the thing and see if it would actually go on! There was good news and bad news. The good news was the offsets were correct and the frame would actually fit onto the pins. The bad news was it fouls on the car before it bottoms out. The front of the subframe hits on the floor of the car in a big way without any of the spacers in.
Anyhow some pics of all the "action".

Andrews very own 260Z with an off its tree L-series straight 6. Cant wait! :)
Another update, I'd been working on removal of the standard diff bushes and cleaning up the standard cap which must be reused to fit the new aftermarket urethane bushes. I've also started modifying the floor so the S15 rear sub frame will fit in. Its not far off fitting now but the floor needs some proper panel panel beating to make it look a lot neater as it currently looks like shit. I'm not 100% sure its going to be fixable so we might have to cut it and and box the section. Excuse the pics they were camera phone specials.

We were discussing using a wilwood pedal box for my brakes and we did a mockup fit of the pedal.
This would allow me to ditch the booster from the engine bay which is both heavy and ugly and also hopefully provide a very precise and easy to modulate brake feel. Still need to do more research into this though.
Andrew was able to spend some more time spot welding this week and we're hoping no other jobs get in the way of finishing off the rest of it this week. Also headed to Bodyform to discuss the bodywork and racetech steel to pickup some supplies we need.

I buggered up beating out the floor. If it doesn't turn out better I'll need to resort to cutting it out and welding a boxed section in. I have afew ideas on howto make this look ok if it has to happen.
This poor little wire brush has had a hard life. The one next to it isn't full size either!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_7342.jpg
I removed the rear hatch lock which will now be replaced with lockable flush pins.
I also ordered something from japan was pretty excited about it actually not that anyone else will be :P
Made a rough pizza box template of how I'd like the floor box to be if we have to take that route.

this is awesome
Cheers man, lots more to come.
Heres the part that came from Japan I was harping on about. Had just been working on finishing up spot welds with the linager. Also removed the spot welds on the rail cap where the new section will be going in. Also used some extra hands to do a rough fit of the dash and get ideas on how I'll trim it accurately to fit the cage. I think I've come up with a solid idea to cut it in the correct places before it goes in.
I found this youtube vid which should help abit the gaps on his are where my front cage legs will go so it should turn out well and look pretty neat.

Anyways, some pics!
Rail, we ordered the same section for the other side. The floor profile is the same so will fit perfectly. It is going to be slightly tricky though as its inside the other rails at both ends.

Been meaning to read through all of this for quite some time now. Finally accomplished that tonight.
I gotta laugh at the assbag who has literally nothing else to bitch about other than how the welds look... Good.
Hate on hater.
The new chassis rail was now in place ready to be welded in I was super happy with how it has turned out. I managed to rust convert most of the drivers and passengers door sills I just need to do the tops of them now which may prove difficult as gravity is against me!

The plasma cutter was used to cut out plate sections to cover holes in the firewall. Once the car is rewired no wiring will be in the wheel arches at all anymore. I hadn't seen one used before they're a pretty cool bit of kit!

The plates we cut from the sheet turned out quite neat no more giant holes in the front wheel wells anymore. I started treating all the seam welds with rust convertor to minimize the risk of rust later on also going to go nuts with fish oil once all the welding has stopped. Getting the rust convertor in was quiet a tedious task I had to use the syringe to do it ugh.
Spot welding has almost finished up.
I went and bought the seam sealer and 1k primer this week from VG paints. I think I'll probably have to go back and get at least one more tube of the sealer from him though after looking at how much there is to seal back up.
Cleaned all the paint of the triangle gaps they'll have plate welded into them as they are no longer needed for wiring.

So the next part was a super busy period on the car. All the rust protection priming and sealing had to happen in three weeks before the car went off to get some bodywork done. I'd been doing 7 day weeks on the car currently ranging from a min of 2.5 hours a day all the way up to 8 hour days on the weekends and days off. Lots of work has been getting done though! =D
The shell had the spots linaged back, rust treated, sanded, vacuumed, cleaned with solvent and then primed. This was an epic job and this doesn't include sealing which is another massive task in itself. It was really starting to come together now and not look so much like scrap metal though. =D The following Monday was the deadline for the body shop so it had to be rolling again by the Sunday prior. This was now very achievable with another big week stuck at it.
Oh and huffy sliders are fkn mad fun we wasted afew hours one night on those. =)

I managed not to get this all over myself accept when James decided to plaster my leg with it while looking the other way lol.
Very happy with how the front towers came out yesterday the rest of the engine bay is way time consuming cause I wanted it to look as neat as possible =)
The engine bay and the interior remained then I needed to get the suspension/running gear in so the car can the towed easily.

The next week I got a surprise delivery from the UK, I wasn't expecting these so soon. Poly carbonate very light less than half the weight of the standard glass at a guess if not less.
I did a test fit on the rear hatch. Fits very well with the seal on there it should look very close to standard. Its awesome how they come with the black coloured in sections like standard glass does as well to hide all the pillars. =)

I sat it over the rear hatch to get an idea of fitment. They're pretty damn good I'd highly recommend them. Just keen to see how well they go with some time on the car and scratches. They comes with a scratch resistant coating as an option which I got. I might see if I can run some tear offs on them still anyhow as lexan ones look shitty once they get all scratched up.

plastics4performance champ.
Another big day on the caulking gun was had again. James came to lend me a hand too which was a big help. (thanks) =)
The interior is I would say 90% done there are only a few more seams which need to be done and then some fix up work in afew spots I'm not quiet happy with. Then the doors, steering column, front guards, running gear and suspension all needed to be refitted so the car was back to a rolling shell.
Anyhow some pics of the sealing work. I'm really happy with how its turned out its looking about as neat as I could hope for.

Yeh there is so much time in the shell just as it sits and still looked like a car wreck lol =)
Yeh I've noticed that but fear they all face rust issues after not too long cause the factory paint gets burned during the process so everything needs to be treated and oxygen kept away. I've put alot of effort into trying to do that so hopefully this can avoid issues later on. Time will tell though I guess!

Things are powering along at the moment. There is a pretty epic engine for this in the pipeline will be more details of this in August. The SXDS15 is stealing alot of time away from my car cause it has to be ready before World Time Attack Challenge for testing.
So much to do so little time!! :)

Nah you wont find those in the trash! Will be kept for a rainy day :P
Had a massive weekend following, picked up the old side skirts and rear bar from Matts who has been kind enough to store them for me since I stripped the car. (thanks again Matt)
Got the car back to a rolling state as well, just put the S13 frame back in so I didn't have to get all the new S15 arms dirty at the body shop.
I've got my concerns about fitting the kit there is a fair amount of work involved to get it to a stage I'm happy with. The origin guards are far from a perfect fit. Also did a bodge trial fit of a 18x9.5 +22 CE the new guards swallowed it whole. You could almost fit your head in the gap! Should fit 11's without much hassle I think!
Have to get up and organise a tow truck the following morning.

So the car was back out of my hands and over at Bodyform. It got towed over and slightly sprinkled on but I whipped out the car cover and also dried it down with a rag once the cover was on. The steering is now bodged up and its much easier to move around.
The front koguchi power guards going on have no top pin line through them so I'm considering removing it from the doors and rear guards too. My gut feel is it'll look good but I was slightly worried it might look odd without it as the rest of the panels are so plain.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_7895.jpg
Was looking forward to a few weeks of much less strenuous work!
The car sat at Bodyform for a lot longer than I'd initially expected which was rather frustrating as there was plenty of other stuff I could have been doing with the same time. After afew weeks Peter free'd up some time and got stuck into making the new inner guard out of the old guard. I popped over on a Tuesday to drop off some wheels that came in from Japan. The outer skin of the guards had already been cut.
You can see how much has been cut away from where in inner skin still sits.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8050.jpg
This bend is to give the inner guard a lip to rivet too and the whole thing more strength.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8053.jpg
I was pretty surprised how thin this metal actually is, so piss weak its not funny!
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8054.jpg
Reminds me of the garage sale flyers with the tear off tabs :P

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8060.jpg
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8064.jpg
You can see in this shot he car is actually stiff enough now that where jacking it from this point the front wheel lifts off the ground well before the rear. I really need to get the rear droop shortened though when the Bilsteins get a makeover in the not too distant future. The current rear droop is total overkill and is more just an annoyance when trying to jack the car up than anything else.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8065.jpg
Should be alot more room in there soon! =)
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8070.jpg
More soon!
So the next time I went back Peter had riveted the inner guard to the new lip on the outside already and cut the excess off. The origin panel had been stuck on with afew self tappers to line it all up and see how it fitted. It was actually better than I thought when we did our bodge tape on method which was a pleasant surprise, usually its the other way around. :P
Looking up in the guard at the new riveted inner guard with the widebody panel on.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8074.jpg
Lots of tiny cuts mean over all the whole thing can have a nice rounded transition. This will all get tied together with urethane paste once its done so it wont fill up with water.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8075.jpg
The gap to the outer guard will be covered with a new section of fiberglass.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8076.jpg
How the panel will sit.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8077.jpg
You can see a dip in the back of the panel. Average glass work, will need to be skimmed with bog. =/
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8078.jpg
So while we were there with the guard on I thought we'd try on one of the 19x11 -9 SSR rims I'd ordered for a Mate of mine. At full droop this looks like it wont quite fit but once the suspension is compressed it should easily. I've heard the S15 rear subframe pushes everything out 15mm odd further each side though so I'll need to get that in before I can do a proper fitment and order some wheels.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8079.jpg
I wish we could have jacked the wheel up. But nothing was handy to do it with that didnt risk damage.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/IMG_8080.jpg
There is a good 25mm or so space on the inside to the strut helped by the 19" size though. I'll probably stick with 18" wheels though so this might be a much tighter squeeze when it gets to ordering wheels. I'll have to wait and see though.

Those Pre made fender well weld in thingys, where can I buy them?
I went over to see the car and check how things were going again the week after wasnt quite as much as I was hoping for but there had still defiantly been big steps forward. The guard had been sanded back on the underside and re-glassed evenly making the fit tighter and the guard much more sturdy. It was also glued onto the car with epoxy resin before the glass resin had set so the new position on the car is where the glass will set. Rivets were applied for an extra tight fit as well.
A new fiberglass inner guard has been made and glued in bridging the gap between the new metal inner guard and new glass outer guard. There is still a tiny gap but this can be filled with sikaflex.
Very happy how its turning out there is still alot of sanding and probably a light skim of bog through the panel to remove all the waves and give it a nice glassy finish once painted. I was trying to organise with Jimmy to go over and check it out and show him what lay in stall for us to work on.

Got them off a fabricator based in South Australia called Rex Kelway look him up on nissansilvia.com and send him a PM.
I dropped over to bodyform at the end of the next week to checkup on the progress. The guards had been glassed on and I was told the car should be good to go soon.

Gah...Oh well :( ...Lets see what you have in mind :)
I went over late the following week and early this week to checkup on the car. The other major job he was sharing work with left the day before my second visit so my car should get done more quickly now. The first skim of bog has sealed up a lot of the gaps the later photos are of the third skim. You can see where the gel coat is still visible at the edges showing how thin the skim is. The whole face of the guard needs a light skim of bog to remove all the ripples before paint. I'm aiming for a nice glassy gloss finish like we got on nfi's car but there is alot more work in mine cause the panels we've started with are much more wavy than his were.

Hahaha!
I personally love the rough-type of look rivets gives the car, but this is good too.
Yeh I agree they suit some cars but its not a look I'm after and I think it screams drift car. While this will probably spend some time sideways when its finished its by no means a drift car so I wanted to get away from that a bit if possible... =)
Visited the body shop the following weekend and was pleased to find the car almost finished. Had to organise a tow truck for the following week. The guards have turned out ok you can see but the bog marks how smooth the guards are from origin though. :/
They're going to need a coat of spray bog and cut it right back to remove the highs/lows before we high fill them though but this should give us a pretty good finish. The gelcoat on them doesn't like sanding at all.

We spent some time trying to decide how high up to cut the rear bar it was eventually decided the free hand top line on the left hand side was going to be the new height. A street diffuser will be made to go on with the bar and stay there. Then a more wild lower one will be fitted below this for the track.

No reason to take pics and upload just for me.... Was just curious that's all.
So my ebay special order arrived the other day. A new wiring loom for the car with a new neat little fuse box. We wont be needing this many fuses so the loom itself can be stripped right down to probably two thirds of the size/weight of this.

Picked up this very neat little setup few weeks back. I'm not running a Haltec so we were unsure if I'd be keeping it for awhile. I've now found out it'll work with what we have planned so its staying.

Well my initial review is that Haltech were a pain to deal with and I'll avoid buying anything I can off them in future. We ordered two of these and listed the ECU's we'd be using them with which they said were ok except one which needed something extra to work. We then found out they were not ok cause the "haltech" version has some internal changes so they told us they'd have the standard racepaks in 7 days. Two weeks later we'd not heard anything and the car the dash was for had a very tight deadline so we had to return it and they wanted a god damn restocking fee!
Not happy campers. :bash:
So Wednesday morning was spent rummaging through all the parts boxes I have of the stripped parts that came off my car. I was looking for the brackets that run between the top and bottom radiator supports which the front bar hangs off. They turned out to be in the very last box I checked which also happened to be the box on the bottom requiring everything else to be moved before I could get to it Murphys law. Pete needed these to finish off his work with the front bar and I was organizing the car to be towed that afternoon.
Front bar custom work. I was really uphappy with how the intake of the bar tapered down to a small mouth also it wasnt straight and bowed in. We cut and re-glassed the whole mouth into this new and improved shape. Should be much better for airflow now.

Neat trick for the gas flap
I got the car back and wasted no time in fitting up some borrowed 18x11 TE37SL with 295s on. The rears swallow them whole they need to come out approx 15mm per side for me to be happy with them. Which is hopefully how much the S15 rear frame pushes them out.

The fronts needs some low and small slip ons should be good. Still didnt have the rear bar back yet though as Pete had not finished modifying it. I'm really happy with how everything has turned out except where the front guards have to cut right back in to fit into the bar. I'm probably going to make up some canards to cover this gap cause it only really looks shitty from the front imo.

Wait and see I guess I've had about 5 different people who have done it or know someone who has done it who are telling me 30mm total track gain though so I'm thinking that its probably on the money.

Over fortnight parts from Japan. So turns out I'm mildy retarded and ordered the incorrect boss for the steering wheel. The bolt pattern is totally different. So I have a short splash short boss kit to suit not a nardi wheel. Also got a new dipstick and the pipe for it cause my old ones look... old.

did you know what the offset was on the 11's te37sl that you test fitted? and roughly how much clearance did you have from the rubber to fenders? just seeing if i can cram a 18x11 +4 285/30/18 with only approx -1.5 camber under a 50mm rear
ps: sorry for the small letterings cpu is wacked
They were +18 the lowest offset they come in.

Shit... I think it looks beautiful; love the widebody style and diffusers. Plus it's racecar. Who cares what it looks like, provided we never get to see it upside down due to a crash.
Is this the team that was doing wind tunnel testing? Or was that the matte black strawberry hatch conversion?

Check out my post a few things up. I was asking if they were the team that did the wind tunnel testing for WTAC. Then my follow up was I guess not... It was a matte black 13.5 hatch. Can't remember anything about the team or the driver other than he had a pretty severe pedosmile.

Ah that car wasn't at the event this year that threw me off abit. I'm not sure about it being wind tunnel tested I haven't seen anything though.
It finished second last year with a 1:35.7. Open class cars stepped up a notch again this year with that white/carbon S15 above running a 1:34.2 and finishing 4th! The conditions were super windy and cold compared to last year so that would have robbed some time as well.
Not really that related to my build but I thought it was pretty awesome, some shots of the scorch team flying into action. Its nice to see Suzuki isn't shy of working on the car in the slightest. They blew the diff on Saturday aswell and he was under the car fixing it not long at all before his session started. I dont think you'd see that in most of the other pro class garages much respect.

Measured the distance from my current wheel to the indicators its only 55mm so I think with the short boss and an the new works short removable hub kit should work out. I think the ideal position for me would be 60mm.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h27/mutto_101/20120818_175557.jpg
I'm happy with how its going to look it'll require some rather tight offsets to really set it off though. The only thing I can really pick on is how the guard drops away in front of the front wheels before the bar steps back out. Not a fan of that part at all, only really notice it from the front though. Pretty much everything else I'm happy with. Going to see if I can come up with some sort of canard which hides this though.

Thanks man I cant wait to drive it in anger! Dunno about the hours your car is alot closer to finished by the looks of things! :)
Sooooo was finally able to pickup my completed rear bar from bodyform. Glad to finally get everything back. Pete had his doubts about how it'd look when I told him what I wanted done but its come out very well. Exactly what I'd pictured in my head. It obviously looks abit odd without the diffuser which will be completed later on.
The idea is to have the diffuser for the road that also stays on for the track. The main function in reducing drag and then aesthetics. Then for the track there will be a proper diffuser which goes on to generate some down force, neaten up the airflow and also look pretty aggressive. :)

Lol nah didn't get a chance to get pics, hopefully really soon though.
So I received a delivery not long ago defiantly the part of the build I'm most excited about! =) Something I've been waiting on for several months now a Mazworx SR23VET. Pretty over the moon that it made it here in one piece its a bit scary while its in transit. Its been decided even though it will take longer everything needs to be fitted to the car for a "test fit" before we paint it. Any further brackets or changes to the chassis can be done then without damaging the paint.
Really happy with how the crinkle black has turned out though. I'm toying with the idea of painting the lettering some bright red colour, should look pretty good against the black I think? Sticking with the P11 cover I dont like the P12 one much, dont think it looks enough like an SR20 anymore :)
Thanks to John for taking delivery for me much obliged.
