View Full Version : Hks Silent Hi-Power Resonator removal?

hey guys. I live in california, and where i live cops like to pull people over for loud exhausts. as of right now, i have the 85mm hks silent hi power on my car with stock engine and an aem intake. its pretty much perfect when it comes to noise level, as its quite when cruising and loud at wot. i kinda want it to be a little louder though, because for some reason (cali drivers suck) i constantly have people trying to change lanes into my lane when im literally right next to them. happens probably a couple times every 2 weeks. now i have a fear of driving right next to people, so i end up speeding to get past them. i figure if my exhaust was a little louder, they would hear me and not change lanes when im next to them. of course thats using the logic of motorcycle riders.
onto the problem: the internals of my resonator broke, and now im stuck with 3 options. some important info about the broken internals is that it only sounds like shit for about a minute or 2 of driving. after the exhaust heats up a little bit, the sound goes away. this leads me to believe the break isn't that bad. now onto my options.
option 1: cut open the resonator and see if my buddy can fix it. if not, i'd be forced to take option 2 or 3.
option 2: buy a smaller, round resonator (for those of you who don't know, the silent hi-power comes with an oval, larger resonator) and have it installed in place of the old one, to achieve the louder exhaust noise.
option 3: buy a new resonator of the same size, spend the same amount of money as option 2, and have it sound the exact same as it does now.
so basically, my question is exactly HOW much louder will it be with the smaller resonator? does anyone know?
and for flamers: im running the 85mm because i plan to go turbo and didn't want to have to buy a new exhaust in the future.
additional info: its for an s14 with a KA.

sorry man, not to flame you but this is kinda retarded... but to answer your question, those small resonators are basically not resonators. might as well be a straight pipe. And.. you may have missed it, but in the book that you have to study for the drivers test, it states that you are not suppose to drive side by side next to other drivers.

I have the hks hi power on my car(sohc ka) and i kept dragging the resonator.so i took it to an exhaust shop and just got the pipe from the cat to the axles copied but it is just straight pipe now. It sounds a little bit louder but not too loud at all. I live in a city where cops always pull over cars for loud exhaust and i never get hassled. It sounds a little bit more raspy but only when i get above about 5k revs.
Anyways..i would most likely go with option 2, or just do a straight pipe right there.
Hope this helped :)

done.....
but on a more serious note.... you ought to look around youtube for different exhaust videos and find one you like. or at least get a different idea from them. if your interested in having a louder car, nothing but straight pipes will not only scream hey I'm here.... but hey I'm a jackass. practicing a more defensive driving technique will suit you best in that department. i think youtube is your best bet. however, bozo pipes will definitely get you noticed.

what book? i studied online lol. there wasn't shit about that. people drive side by side all the time where i'm from. thanks for the info though. now i have a justification to speed past them haha.

exactly what i was looking for. thank you. ill probably have him install the smaller resonator then.

i've tried searching on youtube, but not many people have the 85mm hi power on a stock KA, let alone with the resonator cut out. so i couldn't find one. not to mention, you can't really tell how loud something is over a youtube video lol.
and im not looking to be an obnoxious attention whore. just somethin a little louder so i can be heard when driving up next to someone. as for practicing more defensive driving, believe you me, i have been lol. i've even learned to read other drivers so i can tell when they're gunna get over before they even put their blinker on. plus like i said before, i now tend to try my best to avoid driving next to someone.
as much of a shocker it may be, most of the people who change lanes into me are women. i've had one teenage guy do it, but thats it.. not sexist, just stating facts lol

I had this same situation on my old Blitz Nur Spec. Blitz doesnt use a full muffler (thats basically what that piece is) but uses the round resonator piece. Shit rattled loose after getting slammed got knows how many times. I took it to an exhaust guy and had him cut it out, just weld in a straight pipe. Actually made the car sound quieter...but this was on an SR20 and the turbo kinda muffled the car some.
If I was in your shoe, I would weld in a straight pipe and get a silencer just in case its too loud for your taste. When you go turbo, then you can ditch the silencer.

Some Cali drivers suck at driving, get a louder exhaust so they notice you.......nope.
Option 4: paint your car neon orange and get a louder horn!!!! :p

can't go with the silencer option. the silent hi power actually never came drilled for a silencer. probably because its already quiet enough lol

When driving around in Cali, I like to be either ahead or behind someone in either lane next to me. I absolutely hate hanging out next to or in their blind spot because, as you said, people in Cali are some shitty drivers. If I ever find myself in someone's blind spot, I make sure to get away from them as soon as possible. I'm very sure your problems can be resolved without having a loud ass exhaust. It's not like they're gonna know you're there just because your exhaust is loud, but you potentially increase your chances of being targeted by the CHP
that just my opinion
