I just got my license and me and a couple friends are going to the local track before it closes for the winter and i've never raced before how can i get a good start with an auto?
Thanks

all you can really do is work on reaction times, because if you try to rev it up and launch from neutral and shift into drive, you will be picking up your transmission in pieces from underneith the car.

the only conceivable advantage of an auto car that i can think of is in nitrous oxide applications. an auto is ideal for nitrous, because keeping the engine at WOT is less of a problem.

Brake stand. Put your foot on the brake so it holds the wheels while you press the gas down. Then when it is time to go release the brakes and launch away. DON'T got from neutral and slam it into gear, it is a great way to leave your transmission on the ground behind you...

the brake method works well, but i always use both the e-brake and normal brake...you just have to adjust your timing on this, because your foot will come completely off the pedal before you fully disengage your e-brake (unless you slam the bitch down really fast)...just time it right and you can get a pretty good start...

buy a better auto tranny, hahaha
the good ones shift faster than pro's using stick

auto tranny's w/ low torque like our cars (compared to like monster v8 autos w/ crazy hp) won't work as good, better auto tranny or not, it will still slow it down compared to a stick.

yes...triptonic or something isn't it? the new porsche uses one and its only .2 seconds slower than their best manual time.

Venom quick shift.....believe me it's worth it.....it works great....also never never go 2 d4.....d3 max....cuz i doubt u gonna pass the rev limit in d3...thats .2 seconds...well thats what shifted 2 d4 cost me <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

don't manually shift an auto...just stick it in D3, power brake, and go when you see yellow.

never dragged, but should u go when u see yellow in a manual 2?

go when you see the last yellow light...trust me, the car won't move until the green light glows b/c no human has a reaction time that fast.

i always hear them talk about reaction times on t.v. n stuff, u know how they do that? do they just see when the car crosses the starting line?

oh this is just horrible.. too much bad advice on this thread..

1) &nbsp;Dont bother drag racing the auto.. its lame and not fun. &nbsp;Unless you've got a seriously beefed up motor w/ a modified auto-tranny.. its useless to race.. just useless.

2) &nbsp; If you want to have fun with your car, have fun in the twisties.. you can still have a lot of fun with the automatic, especially through the turns.

Feel free to shift through the gears, its the ONLY way the car is driveable. &nbsp; As long as the car and tranny are warmed up, then feel free to drive hard and romp on it while shifting around. &nbsp;Like any transmission, you have to upshift/downshift at the right moment. &nbsp; You dont want to put it in 1st over 30mph, 2nd tops off at 60, and put OD on if you are revving too high on the freeway. I &nbsp;know 3rd tops at ~100, so OD should be on when you are cruising at those speeds..

Brake stands are okay if you are racing from a start, but like I said.. its not worth the trouble. &nbsp; You'll gain what, .2 of a second gain? &nbsp; Its not worth risking the wear and tear on your transmission. &nbsp;Dont even bother wth neutral drops, those are just rude to your car.

well u might not like to race an auto n think it's &quot;just useless,&quot; but hey, maybe he likes to race it n he can compare it to other autos n test his car out. i think driving through turns is better w/ autos n manuals though.

if he wants to race an auto then that's his choice...it may not be fun for you but if he likes it, that's on him...who's to say he shouldn't race???

just don't lose!!!

listen the auto was the only car i could afford at the time, nobody bought me a car i worked two jobs last summer and if i want to go to the track with my boys i'm not gonna not race just cause i got an auto.

good attitude

hehe icer don't feel bad you got an auto becuase i do too...and feel good that it won't put a strain on your left foot in traffic jams..hehe.nah but i don't care i race that mofo like it was a #### stick...push it to it's limit..i like the brake stand tech when i'm racing another honda(eh no other brand of car ever messed with me besides these &quot;airplanes&quot;)....it's great..good take off..especially with our car with low end torque..i've been able to beat a few other cars out in the streets and there stick shift....i'll enjoy the freedom of driving a auto while i wait for my 5 speed swap...

Are you saying autos are better on road courses and the like? &nbsp;That's where they suck the most. &nbsp;

aight i got a 240 with an auto i take it to the track all the time ... best way is to not use the foot brake just hold the e brake up when the yellow hits floor it and drop the e brake at the same time.. trust me on this it works perfect ...

actually its faster if you shift an auto &quot;manualy&quot; your a few tenths of a second quicker because you can hold the gear for longer. but you gotta time it to the cars tranny when you do that becaues its not instant. it takes a second for the tranny to respond so you gotta know how fast your engine revs so you can anticipate it. &nbsp;power braking is the best way which is when you hold the brake as hard as you can and press the gas. &nbsp;then you let go of the brake. &nbsp;using the ebrake is pointess because its the same brake the only thing it does is slow you down and. &nbsp;you guys forget that the ebrake uses the same calipers as the regular brakes the only difference is that it has its own brake cable
