i have seen a few cars with this dome they have made pipes that suck the air from a lil vent the 92's have i was wondering if anyone has done this on a 89 or another modle that does not have one of those vents?

Its been done on the SOHC's. I think the guys car in the link below has just that. IMO gains are questionable since the intake piping is soooooo damn long. I always hated the Cold Air Extension crap for that reason. If you want to see results with a custom setup. Make a custom Short intake and relocate your battery and move your MAF and filter to the other side. There is a link to that below the first link...

are you talking about just putting a pipe in the vent to duct the air toward the airbox? seems logical to get more airflow in there... just go to home depot and get some a/c ducting pipe... that silver flexible stuff.

I've done this just for fun on my 89.

I had an extra airbox lying around, and a hose from an old shop vac that fit through the hole for the stock Y-pipe.

I hacked a hole in the airbox with a dremel tool:

routed the piping down through the hole:

and then secured it in the grill with lot of zipties(it is tighter than this):

My impressions?

A worthwhile waste of time, spent screwing around with my car. Performance value is very little below 70mph due to the small diameter and length of the piping. On the highway I "feel" the car is alot more responsive for having plenty of cold air readily available.

rennen: that's exactly what i was talking about... except using the ~4-5 inch diameter piping (flexible a/c ducting) i think i'm gonna do this today.

yeah, only problem I had with that is you would have to cut a ~4-5" hole into the metal under the airbox, where the stock Y-pipe passed through. And I have to take my car back to stock for autoX season.

Also, the next thing I will do with mine is run a flap over the stock hole in the aibox, so I can get a ram air effect at speed, but it will open up for more flow at lower speeds. I did the math and even with my weak 2" pipe, it will flow 47% more air at 70mph.

Oh, and watch out, the air filter gets real dirty real fast this way.

sounds good. i wasn't planning on running directly into the airbox but just to that hole where the y-pipe ends near the headlight. (not the resonator hole)

edit: i haven't gone out to look and actually see if there was clearance for my idea so this all could be for nothing.. haha. i'll post back with my finds.

I removed my y-pipes and resonator box on my s14 and i can notice a little difference in throttle response and top end power. I'm seriously contemplating relocating my battery and fabricating a custom short-ram intake to draw air from the passenger side of my engine bay. A custom aluminum intake box would be nice too...hmmmm.....

mixxamike: it's just louder. by removing that y-pipe you're just allowing the airbox to draw in hot air from the engine bay. not good. it's been proven.

well...darn it. I guess i'll be making my own intak. It sounds hella cool though!!!
