View Full Version : Do you wish your 240 had a cup holder? Maybe I'll make some.

Update: As of 2/20/2016 I have actually made the cup holders that I wanted to finish so long ago. Here's a pic and a link to my business site www.UniqueAutoCreations.com (http://www.uniqueautocreations.com) Now we can all enjoy an nice cup holder. Thanks for being patient!

http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/riprodder/UAC%20Standard%20Edition%20Cup%20Holder%202%20edit .jpg (http://www.uniqueautocreations.com/products.html)

Original post:
Not having a cup holder in my car is annoying and I'm sure I'm not the only one. So I was playing with the idea of making a cup holder for the S13. It would be made out of vacuum formed plastic and fit inside the armrest storage pocket of the center console. There would be room for two drinks.

As far as I can tell the only options out there are to get one of those pop-out ones that fits under the radio (shifting?), use your ashtray (ghetto but works), or whole saw a couple holes in your center console lid (I have to buy another tool). The latter looks the best but I think a drop in piece that doesn't require modification would be best.

I'm playing with the idea of making it out of either black, clear, or smoked clear plastic. What do you prefer? The clear plastic one could be painted on the back side for infinite color options while keeping the topside durable so you wouldn't mess up your paint job by actually using it.

Anyway. What do you think. If I made some would anyone else be interested in buying one?

Thanks for your input.

lol exactly, I used to do this in my Prelude, and when I get my s13 up and running, I'll be doing it there too.

I'm down for a replacement there. Although, as an aside, that gives me something else to think of for my build. Custom drink holder?

With the pop-out ones u have to switch the radio and cup holder (radio buttom, cup holder on top) so it it wont inerfere with shifting. Plus u get to have 2 sodas with pop-out
(1 only with ash tray). With the arm rest itll have to be open and u gonna give up that space. Stick with the pop-out, clean OEM look, cheap ($5 bucks at junk yard) and after ur done with drink just push it back in. I think i used a maxima one, dont remember

So a lot of you would prefer to have just one cup holder in place of the ash tray instead of two under the armrest? What about if you're a smoker or if you had a buddy riding with you who had a drink too? Isn't two better than one?

the passenger can hold theirs, and for smoking, the windows roll down. if i can hold a drink between my legs while driving, my passenger should be able to do it while just sitting there no problem

I agree about not smoking in the car or at all for that matter but I'm just trying to think of all the angles. There are enough smokers out there for Nissan to have designed an ash tray in the first place for them instead of putting a cup holder there.

I'm also starting to get the feeling that most of you are content with having nothing to put your drinks in. That's fine. But as for me, I'm actually trying to build a nice 240 so I'll be having a place for my drink or no drink at all. I'll still post up some pics once I get mine made and we'll see what happens then.

Cup holder is a good idea!

I haven't got the wiper cover yet cause I still may just delete the whole system, that and eventually going RHD.

I was thinking the other day about asking you to make a speaker holder to put 6x9's in the space behind the location of the power seat belt bs. I was thinking it would take a little thicker material then what you have been making things from though.

Harrypotter, I'm not sure what space you are talking about. Is it the space behind the console? Also the wiper covers are thin due to the complex shape and the fact that it's not a structural item. Making a speaker holder from something thicker wouldn't be a problem.

A single cup holder that replaces the ash tray would be nice. I usually just take out the ash tray and use the hole but does not work well with styrofoam cups.

hOngsterr
03-15-2012, 12:48 AM
i dont like the ash tray loaction, that would make your arm awkward like s2k's cup holder while shifting, yeah you can get used it. But i say for the arm rest holder or the door panel one, but shit looks complicated, or maybe make the arm rest a flip back, strengthen the lid to support drinks etc so you can place drinks on the underside of the lid.

^ That's nice but I actually use my armrest for my arm... The ash tray is really the perfect spot IMO.

And you don't need two cup holders. Your passenger isn't driving so he/she can hold their beverage haha.

KiLLeR2001
03-15-2012, 02:27 AM
I don't agree with any beverages in the center console region, my arm is too active around that area and sometimes I like to rest my arm on the armrest (go figure).

That passenger side door panel cup holder is perfect IMO, but would only work for power window door panels. Manual crank lever would get in the way most definitely.

yayforsteve1
03-15-2012, 03:11 AM
i would say the cup holder insert in the armrest(where you have the lid open) would be a good place to start. so you can have your armrest without holes on the top, and your drink wouldnt get in the way of your shifting.

the door one is pretty cool idea but i have manual windows =\ so iono if itll get in da way

Sucks! hate rare.. Would love to have something like that.

But having any drink bottles in the center console area just gets in the way IMO.. I have the USDM extended arm rest/cup holder (like those JDM ones) and had drinks, my elbow just knocks it over... The extended arm rest is only useful for me.

Wow! So many diverse opinions. Like I said earlier, I'm going to make the ashtray one first because it's a little simpler and won't take as much R&D as the arm rest one but I am working on both right now. The dash vent ones are interesting but don't they put additional stress on the vents themselves? I don't know about the rest of you but my vents had trouble staying put when I got my car. So I ended up taking them apart and adding a small O-ring to one end of the vent on the plastic peg that it pivots up and down on. Then I snapped it back together and voila, like new vent. It is tricky to get them apart without breaking the tabs but it's much easier with a little heat.

What a neat contraption. I removed my stereo and was planning to just have two din pockets, but this would be a much cooler space-filler accessory. Was it made by Nissan though? I am somewhat skeptical.

I know Nissan made these as a universal cup holder for their 90's vehicles:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3598/3321538814_8c1bddd773.jpg?v=0

Then there is also this kind:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b314/whojohnny/PIC-0219.jpg

Though I am not sure what other accessory can be used above/under it. I doubt it was was designed to leave a gaping hole.

Too many options to choose from!

Progress update: I am getting really close to being able to form the actual cup portion of the cup holders. I'm perfecting this first because I'll be able to use it in both the ashtray and center console models. Also I had to make some new frames for holding the plastic while it's in the oven. My old frame was barely holding on there toward the end of the last run of wiper motor covers so it was in need of replacement. I made a pair of new ones from 3/4 MDF so I can be loading one while the other is in the oven. Hopefully it will make production a little faster.

If everything goes well tomorrow I should be able to post a pic of the cup part, but we'll see because the Good Guys Car Show is going on this weekend and I may be going to that. My buddy is putting his Plymouth GTX in so it should be a good time.

ive been thinking about doing this for months. i could easily design a pop in molded plastic cup holder that popped in just like the ash try, print it on my SLA machine, then make a silicone mold for it. Id be able to get 25-50 units out of it depending on the final shape of the part and how well the mold holds up because of it. cost wise, it could be a lot depending on how much the SLA costs and materials. The material alone for the plastic 3d printed part I make the mold from may be a few hundred alone.

i could always make it out of carbon as well...hmmm

so if riprodders version doesnt pan out, i can give this a shot if people are interested. If Riprodders works, then his will be the cheapest option since it'll be vac forming.

riprodder, if you have any issues with getting the plastic to form, let me know, and Id be happy to trouble shoot it with you. i kinda want your cup holder since it means i dont have to make one and can concentrate on my diffuser design.

A few things in response to what I've read:

I usually ony buy bottled sodas and drinks if I really do drink in my car, but most of the time I'm busy doing this thing called driving to drink in the car.

With that being said I do drink redbull while driving and it would be nice to have a mini can holder located somewhere. So I'd buy one of those, that's my problem with cup holders or the ash tray trick is that it reall doesn't hold those mini cans the right way.

Someone said what about smoking and passengers: uhhhh who actually ashes in their ashtray, it's called a window and ash is biodegradable, as for the butt roll out the ember and toss it on the floor and clean it out when u get home... And as for the passenger, seriously if they're too lazy to hold their own drink they can just not ride in my car.

Thanks for the offer RedSIBarron. I'll hit you up if I run into a snag. Do you work at a machine shop? Just wondering since that cup holder of yours is aluminum and fit's like a glove.
I worked all day and still am not there yet but at least I made more progress. "Make progress everyday" is what I always say. Making these sounds simple but this really takes a lot of work. But I'll pay off in the end cause these are going to be bad-ass!

Here's a pic of what the "cups" of my cup holders will look like. I just formed them today. These are not the actual parts though. They are actually undersized a little because they are formed over the cups I made that are actual size. Also the finished part will not be made from white plastic. This is just what I'm using to help get my moulds made.
There is still a few back and fourth steps with pulling a mould off of another mould until I get the final mould that I can make parts off of. I'm still working on the framework that will fit into the ash tray and hold this cup. It will probably be at least another week before I can make a finished part.

I'm getting really getting close to having the cup mould finished. I just have to clean it up a bit more. I also got to make the mould for the ash tray insert today and I'm hoping to clean that one up tomorrow along with the cup mould. Then I still have to form a cup and an insert out of the moulds and combine the two into the actual part. Sounds complicated but it's really not that bad, just really tedious. If I can I'll post a pic tomorrow of the parts I make after work.

Here's a picture so you can get an idea of what it will look like. This one is still two pieces. The actual part will be one piece if I can get this plastic to do what I want but these are proving to be rather challenging to make with my current setup. Sorry it's taking me so long but I want the final parts to be really nice so bear with me as I iron out the bumps in this project.

The one pictured has a textured base and a smooth cup. The actual part will be either all textured or all smooth. Which do you prefer?

riprodder
04-12-2012, 05:24 PM
Update: I've been having trouble forming the cup portion. The previous form I was using was sticking and wrinkling in one spot so I bought a better oven that has more even heat thinking that that would help the wrinkling part. Wrong, but the plastic does heat more evenly and ABS is now easier to work with so it wasn't a total loss. Anyway, I decided that I didn't like the original form so I opted to have one machined out of aluminum. Well it grabbed the plastic like a son of a gun and I ended up having to cut it off. Well I can't sell two piece cup now can I, so I took it back to the shop and had them rework it. I just tried it this afternoon and it released WONDERFULLY! But the wrinkle is still there. I have a few more tricks up my sleeve so I'm going to keep at it until I get it right. Just takes time to learn all the tricks of this new trade I suppose. I'll post more later once I have some news. Thanks for keeping track.

I have one in my S14 and nothing fits well in it. Have it below the radio and drinks still sit too close to the HVAC and tilt out. Never trust them. I always feel they're gonna fly off when I drive.

Plus you cant have something in there when it's in park (automatic). Shifter sits too close.
