View Full Version : Bringing RPS Clutches and Flywheels back.

Hey Guys this is basically an introductory thread and a feeler to see if the 240SX Market would be interested in High Quality clutches that are rebuild-able here in America, don't cost and arm and a leg, and can hold up to the abuse.
I have developed a good relationship with RPS these past couple of years, their clutches are working wonders on the Porche, Supra, and Z Market. they have clutches for the SR20, KA24, and RB20/25/26 as well. they however have not made clutches for this market in quite sometime. I have the means and connections to bring these clutches back, question is how will you guys support a good quality clutch that is comfortable to drive, will hold good TQ, abuse, and be pleasant to own.
they only offer 2 grades of clutches so the choice would be simple and it wouldn't be over complicated like these other companies selling stage 1,2,3,4,5, etc etc.
with RPS We have the Entry level clutch (Sport) and the Heavy duty clutch (MAX) both available in either Full Face Disk(Street), and 6 puck. our 6 puck clutches don't have clutch "chatter" or i should rather say "minimal" for legal purposes but in reality our 6 pucks don't experience chatter like everyone else in the market today. the price itself well it's not bad specially when you consider the clutches are rebuild-able for a minimum price. the Average Rebuild for an RPS Clutch is about $150 depending on how many components need to be replaced besides the clutch pads.
this is the kicker say you where able to buy an RPS unit. for a KA at $210 (Sport Street) or $330 for a Sport 6puck. that would last forever and be rebuildable for around $150 in the future. RB guys would be around $255 for an entry level clutch the same $335 for a 6 puck. SR guys would be at $275 for an entry level, and $355 for a 6puck.
these figures are worse case scenario, obviously if you guys are successful and we push more product the cost would be lower (like a group buy) I can have RPS Have the clutches ready within 5-10 business day and shipped out to you direct from RPS. to keep cost down on both shipping and time for you to receive your clutch.
So how many of you guys are ready for a clutch? I can have my vendor account setup and finalized within 2-3 days if we can have a solid number of people ready for a clutch soon.

I loved my RPS street Max setup when I did my swap back in 06. I beat the piss out of it for 20k+ miles and it still had tons of life left when I sold it. When I say beat, I mean clutch kicks, major slipping at the strip with 400hp and daily abuse. Never missed a beat. However, im now into an Exedy twin. But for those people out there wanting a good solid clutch, I highly recommend RPS.

I would really appreciate knowing how much torque "good torque" is considered for each clutch.. I assume they are comparable to the regular Exedy and ACT clutches and probably aren't good for over 500hp setups.. A twin carbon disc for the KA would be awesome (and I would buy one)..

I had an RPS max street rated at 400 ft-lbs. The hub of the disc came apart on me with 265 ft-lbs of torque. I put MAYBE 10,000 miles on it. Very disappointed in the product. I have an ACT extreme clutch now (unsprung 6 puck) and absolutely no issues.

I've been running a max street for about 4 years, and its been great as long as the pressure plate holds up. I had 2 defective PP that were replaced under warrenty without issue. I cannot specify exactly what went wrong with them for sure, but I have a sneaking suspicion it was due to drivetrain chatter with my welded. Since then its been a trouble free 55,000 miles.

I'm sure I'll be able to get better deals than they did. they haven't sold an RPS product for so long now. RPS can make the clutches again but like i said as of this moment their inventory for SR/KA/RB is minimal. and I'd like to keep those good clutches going for our community assuming you guys are all still willing to buy a good clutch setup.

It's just a renamed Exedy though, right?
I thought I remember EXEDY stamped into it somewhere.

That is incorrect, RPS Clutches are RPS Clutches. if i recall correctly there are only 2-3 pressure plate cover manufactures. it's up to each individual clutch manufacture to build their own pressure plates to their specs after the casting is done. (splines, diaphrams, clutch fingers and so on) you will find it that ACT, Centerforce, Clutchmasters, Spec, JWT etc etc will have 2-3 different brand pressure plates depending on what clutch you ordered. then they change the pivot point of the arms, and give it more load. that's why lots of clutch companies clutch are really heavy, and chatter so much.

guna answer my question about the pull type for rb25 neo
I'm sorry i thought i sent you a PM about that. We Don't sell Pull Type clutches. However I can sell you all the parts to convert from Pull Type to Push Type. Makes taking your transmission off easier no worries about the TOB pin getting pulled out with heavier pressure plate either.

I won't vote as this thread doesn't really apply to me. My sr has a Ogura racing clutch and my other car has a RPS 6 puck. I actually hard bardabe rebuild my clutch since I took it out of my old ka and put it in my new ka. It is a very awesome clutch, I have one of the early early early clutches from what I"ve been told that have been produced by RPS and I love it. I hear the newer ones are even better (lighter pressure plate/pedal feel and can hold even more torque than mine).
If I didn't already have a RPS or an ORC clutch, I would pick up a RPS.

This thread is super lengthy for me to read... but i am wondering.... I have a KA24DE and am interested in a clutch kit...
I've used the stage 3 xtd (yes china or whatever) made clutch with their 10lbs chromoly flywheel. The setup lasted me over 2 years and still has life left...
It's a sprung puck cerametallic setup ...
My goal with the clutch setup is super response and able to take track abuse. That's what I liked about the xtd stage 3... i really abused it but it was super engaging and responsive i loved it... I COULD buy another... but I am open to suggestions. Alot of ppl say xtd are crap but they are not...

I'm in for a clutch shipped to 14607.
I have an unsprung ACT 6 puck now and that thing is waaaaay too hard to drive. It grabs hard for sure but it's like an on/off switch. :(
I'll be around 325-375ftlbs when everything is all said and done so I guess a Max Street clutch for an SR would be the one for me.
Thanks!

The Max Street is rated for 400ft*lbs, right?
I'm worried I'll be cutting it close. When I'm done with my gt2871r build I'm hoping for 350ft*lbs.
I'm hesitant to upgrade to the 6 puck however because I hate the feel of my current 6 puck.
How's the feel of the Max 6 puck vs the Max Street? Better than the unsprung ACT 6 puck I have now presumably, but how much better?
Does it have a good range to it, gradually grabbing rather than all at once? My current one is like an off/on switch with basically no modulation to it. It's a pain in the ass...
