DIY rear window replacement anyone?

Whats up? I recently picked up a 92 lexus sc400 that needs the rear windshield replaced. Instead of paying about 1200 bucks to get this done, id figure someone might have some imput on this.

Ive noticed that there is no gasket to cut into....almost as if the glass sits right on the bodyO_O.

Ive google searched and forum searched and received nothing but 'just psy the 1200'....yea....no, im not paying 1200 for a fucking piece of glass i can get for 100 bucks. As always, any help is appreciated:-)

just a thought. not sure if its true but i bet its like all other windows and windsheilds they are glued on to the body. its a metal lip that it rests on. look on the back of your car and theirs probly a rubber lining around the glass. this needs to be removed first then you remove the glass from the metal body. next you remove all excess glue on the metal . finaly instalation apply the rubber linings to the edge of the window(they might have ripped or broke when you removed them so just sorce them down. then buy some glue specifical for this check your local auto stores and apply this to the metal place the glass on it and seat it firmly and straight. pm if u need any more help

best of luck and fuck that price lol if anything get a hammer and start smashing it lol it will make a mess but an hour vacuming is better than that

Well if it sits in place on the body then use some sealant and press in place carefully and make sure it cures correctly. Just don't overdo it but make sure theres enough to be fully put in place with no leaks. Any strong and weather resistant sealant should do shouldnt it?

You need to remove the upholstery from inside the car around the window. Then you will be able to get at the urethane sealant. There are specially designed razor blades just for this sort of thing. I have done a rear window on an s14 before. We used a guitar string and soapy water to saw all the way around the window through the urethane. The hardest part is to cut the window out without damaging the paint on the outside. Fortunately when I did it we didn't care since the car was junked.

im sure some caulk would work thats probly what it is but just buy the stuff they sell for sealing the window. then theirs no chance it might fall off this is of course that you seal it corectly

yep you want to pull off the rubber around the glass then work a type of metal wire through the sealent(its a pain in the ass). what i use is old bike brake cables or throtle cables from an old car. only use a couple of strands like 2-5. and make sure you have a buddy that will help you out you wont get it out by yourself.

i think your refering to electrical wire if so dont waste your time lol i had a foot to go on my windsheild and no more steel it broke in 2 pulls.

Just get it done professionally, windshield and back glass are structural component of the vehicle. It is not something you want to mess with as a diy project. You don't need to remove the interior to remove the back glass. With a proper knife you can cut and remove the back glass. And no you can't use a substitute adhesive like silicone or some other caulking, it's glued on or adhesively bonded with urethane.

You'll need new back glass molding. You'll need glass primer, glass cutting knife, scrapper. When applying the urethane the bead must be of certain width and height.

My buddie works at safelight and he installed my windshield.... And omg I was so god dam impress ... He sanded the location where the glass works, then they put a primer on the glass and windshield , after that he puts some other thing don't know what it is, then they used this glue that's he says it's really good. I've seen other places do my windshield on other cars and nothing compared to how he did mine

Kiro according to the manual i do have to remove the interior to get to the glass http://home.comcast.net/~ishootstuff/lexus/Lexus_SC_300_400_Factory_Workshop_Manual.pdf (section BO-54). i dont wanna seal it myself, that would be fucking crazy! haha, i just wanna take the glass to my glass guy so he can put it in. I'd rather pay 100 bucks plus labor to put it in and get a good workout than to pay basically half of what i paid for the car just on a piece of glass.

Brent this is what i plan on doing for the future but i cant ride around a whole month with just a plastic sheet covering my window. I've already got pulled over for it and they tell me to get it fixed IMMEDIATELY :-/

yea safelight has a lot of commercials play in my area....i dunno if thats a good thing or not lol

Yeah...When I got my old one out we started it by heating up the wire red hot with a torch and poking it through the urethane. At the shop I used to work at we had this cool pneumatic powered blade called the "ninja." Basically it just vibrated the blade.

I don't see how it would... You know I meant that you poke the hot wire through the urethane sealant and not through the glass right? Well at least it didn't shatter when we did mine.
