27FEB Update:

So the last update said something like "Car is totally done" etc etc. Well.. truth is. That's an issue for me. A car is never done.. besides the fact that I lost a lot of track time dealing with shit power steering pumps and shit alternators.. The fact that I cannot go to the dealer or autoparts store and pick up a BRAND new part for an RB is a huge issue when youre talking about reliability, it wasn't cutting it. Id like to be able to compete. Cant do that is I don't know if I can get the car fixed and back on the track in a timely manner. So I did it. Most of you will probably criticize it but I am posting this on here for informational purposes only. Now I will say. Ive been planning and acquiring information and parts for about 3 months now. car. totally done. 1 in 10 builds follow through till the very end wel here you have it. more pics to come... but a quick look...

car is running at its peak right now. melting my face at a cool 20psi right about maxing out my injectors and maf. coolant temperature a solid 180* . dont even have to run the fan at 50+mph. oil temperatures always below coolant at a solid 170* . oil pressures at idle a healthy 35psi at NOT compared to the 9 i was getting before. af ratios on point. i drove the car over an hour on the interstate with zero issues. throttle tip in a little weird but very streetable. this is a solid car all around and that was my goal. great success!

Ok. I’m finally doing it. I had several requests to write up a build thread. I usually don’t like build threads because with most, progress is slow going. I wanted to wait until I could see the end in sight so that shortly after posting, the car would be running and driving.

The story: I love building cars. I’ve done so since I was 14. I started working on 240s when my brother blew his up at 11. My uncle was a 16 Nissan Master Tech. So it was fate, basically. At age 14, my brother hooked me up with a clean shell. Did a CA swap, new suspension, wheels, etc etc. By the time I was 18 I parted it out. It was at 300whp with an S15 T28, megasquirt, DSM 450cc etc etc. I parted it out and joined the military. Upon return, I built another S13. With help from my Papi Chulo at J3 Drift Lab, I knocked out an RB25 swap in a few days with full suspension etc. Shortly after I saw any track time I had to sell the car due to financial issues. 2 years later with a bunch of money saved up plus a deployments worth of money saved up, I decided to build another car. With intent that its my last. I wanted to build a well rounded, multipurpose car. Comfortable enough to drive on the streets. Completely capable of getting raped on event weekends. Im not a supporter of cheap and knock off parts so I didn’t use any. The xxr wheels are the only thing and they are only track wheels. Once the car is done and I know how it looks I will start searching for a nice set of wheels. So feel free to talk shit haha.

That’s the main things. There are a lot of little things. The car will be stock interior with a harness bar, RYO 5 point and Kirkey Bucket for now. Will see how the 2012 drift season goes for me.

Next up was front suspension/brakes/wheels.

Went with a metallic purple for the wheels. Used a durable single stage automotive paint in an aerosol can. Cost me 45 for 2 cans. 1 can did 3 entire wheels.

This is max camber with 27mm spacing. Later on Ill pull the camber back out a little and lower bout an inch or so more. The fronts are on stock LCAs/knuckles for now hence the spacers.. Waiting on PBM..

That’s it for now. Cars come a long way in 2 months. Hopefully getting it running and driving for April 1st event. Before commenting realise that most of this stuff is mocked up. So the engine bay obviously looks like a mess. Alignments way out. not a completed car to say the least.

I have no real NEED to go 5 lug right now. why spend the money if I don't have to? When the time comes for wheels, if i need to go 5 lug i will. It will be quite easy to change over. cost wise. The bbk was already 4 lug and bought it brand new for cheap from a zilvia member. its not like I went out of my way for 5 lug parts.

forget the name of the color. but it is like a dark metallic silver with a "lavender effect" it has a hint of red/purple in it. not definate but itll be something along those lines. it looks good with the purple though for sure haha

Actually its not as bad as it looks the frame rails in the rear are in tact. What is showing is just surface rust (from what i can see) I will further investigate when I get the car on the lift tonight. funny you said something. You can only really see it with the camera flash at least its the first time i noticed. There isnt any other rust on the car fortunately.

the story with the funding is pretty much. i deployed . saved a bunch of money. paid some bills off and started getting parts shipped home over the course of 9 months. i took no loans or sponsorship. i paid cash for everything. hunted good deals. if i would paid full price for everything i would spent 40k now probably. but i spent half that. instead of watching my bank account grow i wanted to come home and have something to show for my service. cheesy i know. if you ever deployed you would understand. building this one for my dad too. he passed shortly before i left. had to go balls out. had to do it right.. for the one wondering i have 3400 ish into justcoilovers links and knuckles

will have some more pics tomorrow. had the car in the air for the first time. knocked out the rest of my brake lines, driveshaft, and other misc things. confirmed that my $50 OEM Nissan slave cylinder for 05 Maxima was a perfect fit with just spacers and longer bolts.. brakes and clutch are ready to be bled. Finally!

Also my grip royal steering wheel and Uras shifter came in today. Ordered the Uras shifter from RHDJapan. Got it in a week! Happy about that. I recommend the URAS to everyone. It gets rid of the counterweight for more solid direct shifts. its a little longer than stock which placed it exactly where i wanted it. My steering wheel, shifter, bucket are all in perfect position for me. I just have to mount the handbrake yet..

the turbo lines like the rest of the car were done in my head. the car was built meticulous on paper before i even started. down to the penny i knew how much i was going to be spending. the oil feed was simply a -3 adapter on the turbo with a prefabbed stainless braided hoses with a 90 on one end . getting the length right was tricky but i have a good imagination i guess haha. same with the return . bought a generic t3 oil drain kit but made sure it had all the fittings i needed. worked well i supposed. no custom there. i did the same with all my brake line in the rear as well which i will be posting today.

Awesome build man, Im doing a VERY simaler TRA Kyoto/swap (JZ) build right now that Im halfway though on my S13 Coupe in the same area. I went with SPL Pro stuff and Feal's Racing suspension, how do you like the Powered by Max quality?

25mm bolt on spacer on the front FOR NOW. until my PBM flcas get here. In fact, if i were to pull it to factory camber specs, i wouldnt need the spacer. Its set to max camber just for the hell of it right now.

As ive repeated i DONT need crazy offset wheels for these fenders. +15 max and thats with a very stretched tire. I dont know if theres another "how to build a drift car" book i forgot to read but I know what Im doing. Its not my first rodeo.

First off I read your thread, and that has nothin to do with my point.

My point is you have 30mm rear quarters/wide body but your still 4 lug. Your wheel selection is going to be extremely limited with 4 lug, let alone finding something wide enough/decent offset enough to fill the 30mm rears. Why that observation makes me an idiot, I dunno. Just my opinion and EXPERIENCE. I went through the same shit with one of my cars, you might as well upgrade to the 5 lug now while the car is still under construction.

for the 5th time. i do not have a problem with filling out the rear quarters, my stock wheels sat near flush with stock fenders after my suspension arms were installed.. If your so experienced you know that most japanese wheel companies make their wheels to order. 4 lug is available in all their sizes.

so yeah. your point is not valid. i chose to stay 4 lug. unless i seriously need to switch. i dont spend money just to spend money.. everything on the car has a purpose.

Dude SOME wheel companies make SOME of their wheel lines custom and that's extremely expensive. You could easily get the same size wheels in 5 lug for way cheaper. But you obviously know more then me and are far superior in your knowledge.

Stay four lug have custom wheels made vice go 5 and have them readily available/cheaper. I guarantee you'll save money on wheels and have a better selection if you go 5. You're all about not wasting money but youd rather have a set of wheels custom built rather then spend a few bucks on a conversion? That's all I'm saying.

I 100% understand this. I have a chassis that was full of water and mold. I't trying my best to piece the interior back together. It makes the most sense to just gut it and paint it with a cage but I like to be able to drive everything i have on the street and in comfort.

yes yes yes. been working on it all day. bled the brakes, clutch, and ebrake, nothing really to take pics of haha. just getting everything tightened up and clamped down. NOTHING had hose clamps because it was all just mock up.

the car is getting towed to the other shop to get the core support finished up. that'll be a kodak moment haha. dont worry theres definately progress. this car is SO CLOSE..

Started fabricating my downpipe last night while we wait for the 3/4" tubing we need for the front end.

Overall i was OK with my work. I was happy with my fitment. Almost perfect clearence however my welds were JUNK. I'm fully certified and this is wretched. By the end of the weld on the flange, i started to get my heat right. However, I didn't have the correct tools to prep my tungsten electrode. So my arc was everywhere. here's how it turned out.

My first weld in 16 months.

ha. i dont like compliments really. i pay more attention to criticism as it makes me better. compliments just make peoples heads bigger. I can tell you 5 flaws in that weld and in the school I went to, this weld would have failed. As you will see later in this post what I am talking about.

This downtube will be like this until startup unless I get my 3 inch vband in time.

the V band will get welded to the end off this pipe. its a tight fit and I will not be able to add another 90 without making it impossible to remove. For the April 1st event i will run a 90 off that and a turn down to toward the ground. Logistically cant do a full exhaust yet. 4 in. oval will complete the rest of the exhaust.

The flaws in my welds are appearent OBEEWON. Along with my tungsten issue, my filler rod 3/32" 308L is too wide for this thin piping. It worked weld with the flange but there was a lot more meat to lay heat into. I'm a modest person and I'm very critical of my work. I went to school for 2 years to weld and my instructor was comparable to my drill sergeant in basic.

Also, Cage Dave has started on my front end. These are the strut tower braces. More to come tomorrow..

small update:

the car still has XXR wheels..

in other news. my hand brake is mounted and the front end is started. dave changed the design a few times. overall its coming out really well. solid.

took 2 pieces of 3/16 steel welded it completely solid at a 90. its not a perfect 90 but its formed around the trans tunnel. I was able to weld it completely on each side. given the trans tunnel is round and the mount is angled there were gaps on the corners. i didnt bother welding it. didnt need it. its not going anywhere. i prepped it good and there is a solid weld all around. i drilled and tapped the mount for 2 12mm bolts. yanked as hard as i could, leaned all my body weight into it. put my penis on it. didnt move... and its in the perfect spot for me!

alright folks.. another update. i told you id keep this shit going.

MOST of the front end has been mocked up and welded solid. Dave has been busting his ass living out of a bag to help me make my attentive April 1st shakedown day at drift nirvana @Summit Point Raceway, WV. He's done an awesome job and I'm beyond happy. Its NOT done but getting there and most likely will consist of a temporary bolt in core support and crash bar for sunday. But.. what is pictured is permenant minus the dimple died gussets that go between the 2 3/4" tubes.

This design turned out to be incredibly rigid. we each stood on the outer corners of the core support and there was minimal to NO flex. The only way it would move is because the center posts arent tied together yet.

Cars gonna get the temporary braces tonight and towed back over to J3 for wiring. While Jorge gets the wiring squared away i have intercooler and charge pipes to fab up. I will have 2 solid days to get it all done. fml..

Had a LONG fuckin weekend. Want to start off by saying it was awesome meeting a couple of you guys out here this weekend. Just in time to load it on the trailer and head to the event. My boy Jorge Aguilar @ J3 Drift Lab tag teamed this car with me to make this event. I couldnt have done it without him. Cage Dave pulled off the front end just in time.

We had little support with the wiring. An ECU pinout was all we had. Jorge nailed it first time though. He is Genius! It turned over first time like the motor was already running before. Unlike most RBs as soon as the key his the start position it turns over. hardly hear it cranking. its awesome haha.

A lot of this is temporary for the event. if it looks thrown together. thats because it is.( just look at my screamer.. it was a half inch off and was touching my rack boot. it was 4am. suck it! im the unicorn! but we did it and I had a solid day. What was supposed to be a shakedown day but ended up being a full blown drift day. i got about 3 hours of solid track time at probably 20 runs at 3 laps a run on a large 3rd gear D pad.

Only problems I had were : top of 2nd and 3rd it would cut out presumably because I maxed out my injectors. I did the sweeper in 3rd and the transition in 2nd so i was able to band aid that for the day.

also, ChaseBays! oh chasebays... your $240 powersteering kit SUCKS! my cap leaked all day splashing PS fluid all over my exhaust manifold all day.. it was tight and the rubber gasket was there. appearently the rack fittings leaked a little too and i know those bitches were tight. my power steering issues may have been the reason in the middle of a 3rd gear sweeper it decided to yank the wheel out of my hand, straighten up and send me toward the wall. Thank you StopTech and ASD!

Thats all the problems i had with my setup. the stack of tires that should have been where they were was not the cars fault and the dirt. well.. its dirt.. haha. it was so much fun.

Yeah man definately! Got a lot more track time than I thought i would. i thought i wouldve broken SOMETHING.

couple more things i want to add

Parts Shop MAX swirl pot also is pretty much junk. in fact, the one i have is identical to the generic china brand one on ebay with a PBM sticker on the cap. Same price but the problem is. the nipple on the very top THREADS in. its only held on by a thread or 2 with an o ring. it came off when i put the hose in and immediately stripped as soon as i tried to put it back on. so i could not run a coolant resevoir at the track. The swirl pot saved me and i didnt lose too much and the way it is designed, my coolant was always bled. i idled for about 20 minutes at a time with 2 or 3 back to back runs and my temps never went above 185. Thanks to the Copper radiator, royal purple water wetter, and some really good mishimoto fans with a shroud.

Also, the suspension. Started it off completely soft. stock sway bar up front none in the rear. dampening set at 1 out of 24 front and rear on the coilovers. oversteer was controllable and understeer was minimal. i understeered 2 times the whole day. a quick hand brake saved it both times. the car was very easy to "save" .

you can see The Loop at the bottom right. thats where i was at most of the day. its a large hairpin that you connect with Ram site. I do it in 3rd. Coming out of the hairpin at the top of third i didnt give myself to go from top of third. clutch. second. handbrake. dump second through ram site.. instead i yank the hand brake from 3rd and couldnt dig out of it in time. i even forgot to clutch kick which also wouldve saved me. which leads me to my final point

os giken twin plate and ASD 16" handbrake are awesome!

Its kinda hard to spectate the Ram Site, but its where alot of people go the shakedown the car because its more-or-less simple and a little room for error over some other parts of Summit Point Motorsports. Alot easier then Trigger Course (Uses Pistol Grip and Cave Esses for non Summit Point people reading) which I dislike highly.

Should've gone on Bridge course! I love the flow of the track and since I didn't have a car there I was taking some photos.

Dammit, I though PBM would have been alot better then the Circuit Sports stuff I always see.

I wouldve but it was getting late in the afternoon by the time i felt the car could handle it. i didnt have enough grip with the 245/40 contis at 25psi i was running. then tires happened, then the wall ALMOST happened when my rack burped.

i didnt sleep the night before and i was zombie mode as it was. i was awake purely on adrenaline. so i couldnt stop. i couldnt see out of my windshield after the rack incident to. i was just too fucking tired.

ive been working non stop on this thing for 3 months. and i started after i got home from a 9 month deployment. im burnt out! i pulled the car out of the trailor and into the barn. a few days before the next event i will get the bugs worked out and run the next event like this. THEN ill tear down, paint it, and finish the front end. i need to spend some quality time with the wifey.

ps. best place to spectate ram site is above the classroom on the top balcony. thats where my buddies were watchin me

Theres a Skyline at that event on Varrsteons, with Rays and Volk stickers + a MK4 Supra drifting all day with all of its baller parts on an insane Formula Drift/XDC build on Rotas/XXRs and nobody says anything to them.

But an uncompleted S13, 'oh god it has XXRs its the end of the world' lol

well. while this is bumped already may as well throw it out there that although i took a week off im working on getting the car on the road next week. have to do the fuel rail, injectors, EMU and tune it. paint it. then done.

ALSO. Grip Royal came through with a brand new steering wheel and NRG quick release for me. I needed an adapter to fit the nardi style quick release on my momo hub but everything works and the wheel is even closer to me for more rad driving position. Grip Royal is the shit. Will definitely be doing more business with them..

haha thanks well like i said things have been slow for me.. i need to get my bumper bar and headlight brackets made before i can drive it on the street. i really need some space at the shop before I can do so. We have a really big project that is kind of taking precedence right now. It has to get done for hyperfest so like a month?? its going to be crunch time on that one too but I the car WILL be done and painted for hyperfest June 16th. And i will be drifting the drift nirvana on the 17th.

The car is gonna get painted temporarily matte white until the car is ready for full engine bay paint etc. most likely after hyperfest. so for that even it will be matte white.. matte white and purple wont look bad will it? its cheap for now and I need to get the car painted. Ive had some huge set backs money wise. Luckily I have all the parts I need to completely finish the car.

Bout the only thing i havent posted was a 16 second video clip that was meant to be a sound clip for a buddy that wanted to here my car. needless to say, it sounds like an RB25 powered R2D2.

Yeah they do haha. There's a good amount of spots, but you have to hit and quit. There is also this mountain area with some crazy back to back hairpins, I have a few local friends that rip it up hill and down haha.

If there was a track I'd be much happier haha. But I can't complain, I mean come on it's Hawaii !

Finally some updates:

Friday started my 12 vacation consisting of a 4 day memorial weekend and an 8 vacation to Tampa and hitting up palm beach for formula d round 3. towed the car to the shop on Friday. knocked out my 550cc rx7 injectors . complete drop in replacement!! can't beat it for a little over a hundred bucks. also the fuel rail is a jgy piece. its alright. i guess. works.

so yesterday i went most of the day on the emanage wiring. but started off by getting this big assets dent out. check it out.

a little hard to see but this dent was bad. i had already started pulled when i took those. the rear fender was all the way into the truck pan . that space to get to your rear side markers was gone. 6 inches it had to be pulled.

this was my mess last night. the emanage ultimate was about 40 wires . 5 hours and a half roll of tessa tape later this is what i got. anyone cam do this... im coloring! just time consuming. i had to go back and fix some stuff after i read the directions but no issues. turned it on and told it i had 550s and boom started up.

so today i went through the maps briskly all i really needed to do. was set the injector lag time for the injectors. man did that make a huge difference. revs are very very snappy. sounds like its pissed off. like no other RB ive ever heard. turned out that the injectors i used before, the older rb25 sidefeeds, are different than the neos. they flow 10 less cc/min and the lag time is different. even .10ms made a different in idle stability. i mean it sounds the same but man does it rev fast.. for an rb..

needless to say, i didnt have time to really do much especially with a dead battery so i helped my buddy get his e46 ready for hyperfest. i sponsored him in a way. i saved him almost 500 bucks. i took about 5 hours and made him motor mounts to give his BMW - Toyota power! this 1jz fit like a glove and once the mounts were done it looked like it belonged there. if you are in the midatlantic area and will hit up hyperfest you will definately be seeing this car... heres a peak..

Cody Toby. Drift937 on here. iirc he did them for 350? plus a core charge for the knuckle. he had them to me in about 8 days and didnt have to wait to send mine out. they are more comparable to driftworks. (where the tie rod mount is) also DW knuckles are 50mm drop. but he custom makes them to YOUR specs. which was 40mm for me. im a certified tig welder and these things are SOLID. i like them! cheaper than DW and PBM. Im i have good faith that they will do great.

in reality. they dont fit. i called Nate at PBM while i was installing. told me its ok the way i had it. the brackets dont sit down on the crossmember because the bushings are too big. they are meant for s14/s15 rack. i installed them the way they are supposed to and the bolts to torque down just as the bracket starts to bend. there are some pics on the suspension thread.

as for an update. I plastidipped the car for last weekends event which overall was fun which is all i care about. but as far as the car was running, it was a bust. i need to be able to drive it on the street to get the tune dialed in and im having a problem with my ignition timing. i have yet to find a timing light that will read my tach loop.

after the event i peeled it all of and the car is the orginal red again. the hood bumpers fenders and side skirts are painted, spraying the rest of the car with real paint this weekend with a goal to get the car 100% by July 4th. so check back. even though i know most people have lost interest already.

that's the issue man. i bought a pro car kit. with the Wagner power sprayer and 2 gallons prethinned . the cans aren't thinned and will take you 20 cans to do it right. the power sprayer i received produced too much air pressure and the paint dried before it hit the car. left a rough texture a lot of overspread and me pissed off. better off painting it haha

well didnt make my goal. but i got close. i actually ran out of money to tag and title the vehicle. never thought it would come to that!

i did paint the car though, some of you may have seen of facebook. but heres the story. local mom and pop paint store recommended i do a single stage but he can add a flattener to make it a satin. was supposed to be satin. turned out semi gloss. which in some light looked like an uneven clear coat. but im ok with it. I have 140 bucks into a paint job and it looks better than Maaco wouldve done. here it is..

few odds and ends need to be tied up but for now i can drive it on the street, get a good tune on it, and crank up the boost a bit.

note: there is NO bumper support in yet so alignment of front end is still a tad off. needs lowered an inch in the front, etc, etc,.

Thanks guys.. Took it out on the road first time today to get it home.. Wife shot a video so you can can hear it at least.. Video later tonight.. I have to dial back my fuel pressure and get the front end welded solid so the right front corner doesn't sag anymore.

finally uploaded a video from drift nirvana. i did terrible but i progressed a lot throughout the day. this was one of my very first runs on this track. that last turn was a little sharper than i thought! it was also the first time the car was running 100% correctly and not bogging down or cutting out. it feels great.

What are your wheel specs/spacers if you dont mind?

the wheels are 17x9.75 +25with 245.40.17 tires. I have 30mm overs front and rear. 30mm spacers on front. 8mm of spacing in the rear due to the dual caliper bracket.

However, with my pbm suspension links and LCAs I have widened the track front and rear. 1/2" on each side in the rear and about the same in the front. 0 camber rear. 3-4* in the front.

p.s the xxrs look cool in purple lol if you still stay 4 lug, i think some white rota grids for a spare set of track wheels would be dope.

thanks. right now i have a set of fn01rc for spare. finally getting to the point where i need more tires than that. so i will probably pick up either grids or square wheels for next year. completely content with 4 lug. i would not only have to change out my hubs but i would also have to get new center sections for my front stoptech rotors. no need for 5 lug any time soon. plus tire changes are like 15 seconds faster! haha...
