Hello everyone, i'm new here. I made this thread because I found someone looking to trade their 240sx. I'm wondering if you can help me with some questions and if you think it's a good deal.
I'd be trading my 1999 323i BMW with a few goodies such as coilovers, aftermarket bumpers and some inexpensive wheels.
My car has.....
5 speed manual
about 180,000 miles on the car but only like 90,000 on the engine
http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k501/DominicGrillo/Build%20Thread/DSC_0205.jpg
The 240sx has, supposedly....
5 speed manual
right hand drive conversion
s13 front end
bad tranny (but he has a good one to give me as well)
103,000 miles

QUESTIONS!
1. I thought the s13 front ends had folding lights?
2. If that is a 1989 could the front end be changed to be a kouki front end?
3. What would it take to do that?
That's all for now I guess

So I see that it is possible to make the front end look like a s14 kouki?
I guess the owner wanted to go very JDM with the right hand conversion and the front end Silvia conversion?

Keep your bmw, you'd be trading down
But if you insist; if you want an s14 front get an s14
Very few conversions are ever done right

It'd be among the silliest things I have heard of if you traded your BMW for an S13 with bad transmission, even if you got a potato sack of cash on top

I know i'd be trading down but I really like how 240sx's look and I want something a lot cheaper to maintain.

How much are new transmission's for these cars?
Thanks guys

Damn I despise BMW's with a passion but if you wanted a more fair trade I'd look for an actual RHD S13 Silvia. But why expose yourself to the attention of RHD (especially in CA)???

Would you mind educating me about RHD? Is it illegal? I thought that on older year cars it wasn't illegal? I don't know though.

Personally I would keep the bmw as a daily. But thats if you can afford 2 cars. Because the s14 WILL become a money pit.

This. Sell your BMW and grab a Honda accord and an S14 with the sale cash.

my opinion.
either keep the BMW.
or sell the BMW and use the money to find a clean, stock, unmolested s13 or s14 and built it up yourself, that way you know what exactly has been done to the car and know how shabby/properly it has been done.
just my opinion.

s14? no
I was going by the picture of the coupe you posted
an s14 can be had for for cheap (3k - 4k) but it'll be in poor condition most likely
unless you stumble upon a crazy good deal (rarely happens but it does)
a nice one will cost you several grand more
good luck
ps. listen to what everyone is telling you and keep your car.

i think he is confusing himself with a s13 sil-coupe. Thats what he is saying is a s14 i think from what I understood. My personal suggestion would be keep the bmw and read about a 240, common problems, etc. before purchase.

Never trade a reliable running car for a car that's half ass complete. I have a project car and a dd which is my s13. yeah i buy parts for both cars but the S13 has to run everyday until my project car is running then i can rest the dd for a few months so i can replace all the parts i bought for it. it becomes hassle if you have no cars.
the suggestion to sell your bmw to get a decent dd and have some $$ for your project car isn't a bad idea. Just make sure that the DD is always ready to go. cause that car will become your parts chaser as well. Good Luck on your journey.

Are you unhappy with your Current BMW? It's not worth the trade IMO - not even if you're going to be taking cash in hand. Like many others have said - if you want an S Chassis at all, make it a project!

Exactly, When I found my s13 I was lucky, only mods it had was some beener neons in the car, that caused an electrical drain, pulled that shit out and no more problem. The clutch was slipping and took a year of sliding beating on it until it finally said FFFFFFFFFFFFFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu! Still wasn't a bad purchase for 600.00 with 90k on the clock.
Even now If I was to sell my prized to me POS, I would have to give someone a manual with it, so they know what yeah make and model, so they could buy regular maintenance parts.
Then there's the aspect of when your modding your 240. You might as well call it a boat. (bust out another thousand.) simply because things don't always come as cheap as you want them to be. Hell if you get biten by that drifting bug that every 14 year old is dreaming about. your car turns into a GTO. (Gas, tires, Oil) all the things that you will be changing more often than you might think.

Keep the BMW it looks good. Save up some cash and buy a shell perhaps. But if you insist on trading, don't trade for some POS s13, aim for a clean s14 at least.

I'll just quote this one since you all pretty much agree with each other.
I love my BMW but...... it is so expensive to fix and mod at the same time. I would love to have a less expensive car to mod and maintain.
I didn't tell you guy's the full story either so it should make more sense to you now on why the trade sounded good.
First I have a substantial amount of problems that are wrong with the BMW right now. He was willing to trade the car and put cash on top even with the problems.
Here is the scenario. Me and my best friend want to get a project car together to build up for the future. Doesn't matter how long it takes to complete. Just want a car that we can learn on and in the end have a clean souped up ride to take on some road trips.
He wants to do a muscle car but i'm going to try to talk him into a 240sx and if he agrees then i'll keep my BMW and we'll get the 240sx together.
If he doesn't want to do the project on a 240sx then i'm considering trying to find a S14 coupe to trade my BMW for and then get an old muscle car to use as a project. I don't mind doing the project on a muscle car, it would be sick, I would just rather do it on a 240sx.
I'm pretty tired so I hope that all made sense..... :)

So you want to get rid of the bimmer cause of cost in fixing and modding it and then turn around and dump endless amounts of cash in modding a 240. Makes sense.

As long as the maintenance is cheap then yes. I love spending money on mods. I don't love spending money on maintenance. Pretty sure everyone feels this way. So yes I want a car that is less expensive to maintain so that I can mod it more...... Makes sense :wiggle:

yeah probably stock vs stock. but once you start modding stuff, your "general maintanence" lets say becomes more expensive.
edit: you said that you wanted something easy for maintence.. if you want that, getta honda.. seriously, all you need is a few quarts of oil and gasoline and your set.
and unless i missed something what EXACTLY are your plans for this s-chassis "build"
is it just gunna be a daily, track car, ocasional track car..?
i dunno do as you like, all in all its you that are building the car, spending the money, making it to your liikings. not us.

^ this!
Now, I can't speak for everyone here, but regular maintenance for me (each month when I'm actually driving my car) fluids " motor, trans and diff " and at least a pair of tires depending on where and how far I'm driving. When I get out with friends, the tire ratio goes up greatly, not to mention anything that breaks. So, there goes the cheap mod and maintenance idea. But what do I know about riding shit hard and putting it away wet.

Unless i'm completely missing something, I don't understand you guys at all haha.
No matter what car I have i'm going to want to mod it.
If I have my BMW then it's a lot of money to maintain AND a lot of money to mod.
If I have a 240sx then it's less money to maintain AND less money to mod.
Yes both cars will be a lot of money to mod, but the 240sx will be a lot less. Right?
Here are the scenarios as to when I would drive what car...
1) If my friend likes the S14's then we will try to get one between us for a project car. In that situation I would keep my BMW as a DD and still mod it to make it look nice.
2) If my friend doesn't like the S14's then i'll see if anyone wants to trade a S14 for my BMW and use the S14 as a DD that is modded/slammed.
The reason i'm steering away from keeping my BMW as a DD and pick up a S14 for a project is because I want to do a project car with my buddy so if he doesn't want to do a project S14 that's fine with me. It would be too much to have my BMW as a DD and pick up two project cars.
The reason I made this thread was to ask if you guys thought that the trade was good with the person I was talking about in the first post. I'm glad you guys steered me away from it. I'd much rather take more time and try to find a S14.
Thanks :)
Also I don't really want a Honda for a DD. No offense to anyone, I just don't like them at all.
