Hey guys I joined the forum to get some advice on this car I want to buy. Here is the craiglist posting for it:

1990 nissan 240sx (http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/2886081803.html)

I talked to the guy some and it is a 5-speed with 155k original miles.

Right now I'm driving a 2000 honda civic ex. Here it is:

I'm gonna go look at the s13 on Sunday. So my question is, how much should I offer him if I like it? I think $3500 is too much. It looks pretty clean though. I'd have to lose the rims. ha.

Any advice is much appreciated thanks!

Thats the other thing, should I keep the civic or get a 240? I've always loved both cars, but there are alot of civics out there and they feel boring.

That is not enough info to discern the quality of that car. I would want to know if it has rust. The front bumper appears to be a different color than the rest which makes me wonder if he rattle canned it or was it in an accident. As far as the engine and drivetrain, any known issues? Does the tranny shift fine or does it grind?

Remember it is a 22 year old car. Old cars come with old car problems. Look for the obvious and search around the specific S13 stuff.

Lol these guys are screwing with you. You are correct about the price being a little steep, and on top of that it's a sohc. I mean, there's an S14 on your craigslist for cheaper, and that's a newer car with a dohc instead of the sohc.

Make sure to check it for rust, check the radiator support to see if its tweaked or what not (mine was held on by self tappers when i bought it), listen for nasty motor sounds, ya know....the basics. Try to see if he'll let you test drive it and see if you like it.

I'd say if you like it, you should buy it. But not for 3.5K. I paid 1,000 for my car and it was a dual cam, the whole car was in awesome condition, just the tweaked support was really the big issue...but that was before people wanted outrageous amounts for stock 240's.

The front bumper appears to be a different color than the rest which makes me wonder if he rattle canned it or was it in an accident. .

Also, that front bumper is chuki and not pignose like it should be. So either the owner prefers that style, or maybe it has been wrecked like Future240 pointed out.

All in all though, if the car is in good condition and you can get him to go down on the price, then buy it! You're going to have a lot more fun in a 240SX than you would in the Civic.

What years were sohc and what years were dohc?

But yeah I'll be sure to check for rust and all that when I see it. I noticed the color of the bumper, but I would not have known that it was a different style, thanks for pointing that out!

You paid $1000 for a 240 in awesome condition? That's crazy. You never see that around here at all. They're all beat to shit from the wannabe drifters in the area.

P

I would advise you to learn somethings about the car then.

Start here
Nissan 240SX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_240SX)

Then browse zilvia to learn some things.
I am not being sarcastic. Straight from wiki answers your question
1989 and 1990 models are powered by a naturally aspirated 140 horsepower (100 kW), 160 foot-pounds (220 N·m) 2.4l SOHC KA24E engine with 3 valves per cylinder Four-wheel disc brakes were standard, with antilock brakes available as an option on the SE. Both models were offered with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. "Coupes" offered a Heads-up display (HUD) with a digital speedometer as part of the optional Power Convenience Group. This model of S13 is sometimes referred to by its front bumper style named "Pig-nose" due to the front bumper sticking out in a square shape. The 1989-1990 model is also referred to as the S13 Zenki.

89-90 is sohc. 91-98 is dohc.

yeah that bumper doesn't belong on a 90 240sx. they came with pignose style bumpers.

i got it for cheap because that was 4 years ago, 240's werent as expensive then lol

and the "beat to shit" comment...most 240's are sadly..it's truly hard to find one in super good condition. that's why we're telling you to look for all this janky shit hahaha

Yeah np man. I'd really really really check out that car inside and out before you decide to jump into it.

Drive it, listen for clunking in the suspension, make sure it drives straight, listen for knocking in the motor or grinds in the tranny. Make sure the gauges work, make sure the heater works...ac isnt as important i guess but it's a plus. Check for rust on the frame rails and under the floorboard where your feet would be, as well as every where else of course.

Oh and most importantly make sure to check it out in daylight! This is what you get when you check out a car at night and dont notice that the radiator support is held together by self tappers!

Why do you want a car that's 10 years older than your current vehicle?

oh God i hope so.

That will make my car more unique.

to the OP I sold my 97 GSR to get the 240. Sure I miss my Integra but I know I have something that has waay more potential than the Integra. Thats how I calm myself down lol.
