View Full Version : Why not SR20DE?
Why doesn't anybody swap in a N/A SR20DE from the Silvia Qs? Is it cheaper to do it than the turbo? I know it has more aftermarket parts than the KA24DE, but are the FWD SR20DE the same as the Silvia SR20DEs? Anyone done this swap? What the the hp/tq figures on it? Woudn't it give you better weight distribution than the KA? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just curious why everybody favors the SR20DET (besides being turbo).

The SR20DE only makes a 140HP so you be downgrading. I heard there not as well built as the SR20DET.
I though only the Sentra SR20DEs came with 140 and the Silvia SR20DEs came with like 160. Am I wrong?

Even if they did, would you want to swap an engine for an extra 5 HP?
S13 SR= 140HP
S14 SR= 160HP

Eh...it's just the bang for the buck. It's not like the Q's engine would be a #### of alot cheaper. Normally when people swap engines from Japan, they might as well get a good one to work with. Plus SR20DET's are easier to find than SR20DE's so you might as well save yourself the trouble of locating one and just grab the turbo engine. KA24DE's aren't that difficult to tune for n/a. Just to find a good set of cams, pistons, rods, and various internal engine parts isn't like searching for the Holy Grail. You just gotta hit the books and know what you wanna do. It's just that the 240SX is naturally a turbo engine, as closed-minded as that sounds. The turbo engine just has more potential to squeeze power out of it and you get better results. With a turbo engine, just adding a higher flowing exhaust and an intake, plus an intercooler can increase at least 15 horsepower. Exhaust, intake, and headers barely do anything on a naturally aspirated engine, maybe 10 horsepower tops. Some of the times, the gains are so low that you don't even notice it.
The Silvia Q's are 160 HP stock. It's not worth all the trouble at all. Would you rather pay $1000-$1500 (or waste a few days trying to do the work) to swap in an engine to get 10-15 extra horses or would you rather spend that time and money on a swap that gives you more like an SR20DET?

Good point Takumi, thanks for all the replies so quickly. BTW I'm new here from the Honda community and just wanted to say hi

i've seen turbo SR's for 2500, and non turbo SR's from the same website for 500 less. probably not worth it. and i've heard non turbo SR's in silvias are barely slower than KA's of the same year.

Welcome! Which Honda board did you come from? I used to frequent Super Honda for a while, then I got bored, went to Generation 2 Integra Club (since that's the car I currently drive), and then moved over to honda-tech.com, and after years and years of thinking, I decided to go back to my first love, a 240SX. So I ended up here.

Actually, I think a Sr20DE would be a cool idea for a second car, daily driver. Especially if you could do the swap yourself, and the car's original engine was dead or near dead, it would get you an almost new car (well the engine anyway) for fairly little money. There are places in Australia that will sell an SR20DE for pretty cheap, and some will ship to the US.
I still frequent Honda-Acura.net. I think it is probaly one of the better forums, but newbies are takin over and askin stupid questions like "Is this rice?" and stuff like that. Gets kinda lame after like 25 times. Anyway, currently i'm driving a stock Accord and I'm going to be in the market for a 240 sometime soon.
