View Full Version : s14 SR20DET RUNNING LIKE SHIT NEED HELP

Ok so i was at a track sunday drifting and the times i was going, sometimes the motor would sputter, but go away. did that twice. then later im about to go do a run, and the car runs like shit, wont hold idle, super rich. you can smell gas in the engine bay. it smokes alot just plain running like fucking shit. its pooring fuel in the motor for some reason.. i drove it home. when i would be slowing down, in gear off the gas, it would sound like it was running normal.
checked all couplers for leaks. nothing. no vaccum leaks. everythings good. i changed the cts. didnt do anything. runs like shit. holds idle for maybe 2 seconds(by idle i mean stays running on its own) and shuts off.
no leaking injector o-rings..
i can unplug the maf and it doesnt make a difference..
now the maf has a brown plug, and number has 6301. im guessing itsa s14 sr maf, tried to use my friends maf that he has a s14 sr20det but the maf is diff. the plug is different too. its a square and has the metal clip thing.
checked all wiring, all grounds, everythings good!!
CAR IS STOCK TUNE, STOCK INJECTORS
somebody help me figure this shit out i am starting school soon and need to drive my car!!
i want to try somebodys s14 sr20det ecu see if that does anything.. please any imput would be lovely. thanks for reading and let me know

i cant find any leaks what so ever. it does souund like a boost leak though, but i tightened every clamp and felt couplers for leaks

boost leak test, my bov was leaking under vacuum be cause of a bad diaphragm.. get a tester and pressurize your system

make a tester you can make it off things at home depot like black pipe size depends on turbo size and a cap for the pipe and a bike valve stem and you need a compressor

Sounds like a boost leak or bad injector. Try disconnecting each injector to see if it makes any difference to spot if one is bad. Also get some new plugs and check gap as I'm sure they're your current ones are either wet or black by now. After that swap coilpacks with a known working one and see if that makes any difference.

Here you go man:
Your basic boost leak tester should have a gauge and a way to get air in. Personally, I use a thick piece of plastic bag and clamp it over the air intake hose (where the air filter exits). As the intake is pressurized, the plastic stretches out. If it stays under tension there's no leak. If the plastic immediately sags, there's a leak. If it doesn't inflate at all there's a major leak or a hole in the plastic bag. If you want to measure the rate of leaking you need a gauge. NOTE - the examples below are generic examples only, change the pipe diameter to fit your car.

no boost leak i couldnt get my hands on a tester but i tripple checked everything. it seems fine..
i dont think i mentioned this but when i take out the fuel pump fuse, the car idles perfect. i had it on for like 2min and it was perfect.. right when i hit the gas it dies. then doesnt start. you can get high from the fumes in the engine bay.
now the car doesnt start.. all the coilpacks are getting little sparks wtf.
so some how the cas got loose(thelower adjustment bolt is gone) i guess it moved and untimed the motor that would explain it running like shit. the cover has had a whole in it. im just gonna get a new one this one seems fucked it feels like theres tension when i turn the gear. gonna find a good one, time it and hopefully the motor runs good
whos got a s14 sr cas with cap thats good??

ok got good cas timed got new plugs. fucking piece of shit still doesnt want to start. i tried jump starting it and it just backfired loud as hell. i dont know wtf to do

Mine did the same, wouldn't start, i just needed a fan shroud, it was cooling issues for me cuz i was running stock clutch fan, that was my case if not for you then disreguard

bump got new cas, new plugs, timed it correctly. starts right up, but tries to stay on for a second then dies. if i keep steady gas, the rpms jump up and down alot. also, whats fucking weird is if i pull the fuel pump fuse, itll stay on and idle for like 2minutes. wtf. somebody give me ideas im going crazy i need a car to drive by april 2nd

You are flooding it out , just runs for untill it burns off. Maybe fuel pump bad , fpr or something in that nature?

well when the fuse is in it runs super rich. and when it dies finnaly when the fuse is unplugged, i put fuse in start it and does the same shit as before. if the fuel pump was bad wouldnt it not work in general?

When you put the new cas in did you set the timing to the proper spec? Maybe check to see if you have spark and fuel if your having a no start issue. Then if you fix that problem, and its still over fueling, maybe try unplugging each inj, to see if it runs the same or worse. If you have a dvom you can check continuity in the maf to see if its still working and check the voltage. And if thats all good then you will have to quadruple check for a vac leak with the proper equipment. And if you still cant find the problem then maybe you shouldnt be pissing around with the car and take it to someone who knows what there doing. Thats my 2 cents......

yes starts now fine. and maf doesnt do shit when i plug in and out. im trying to get ssome body to look at it and diagnose the problem, but he just got surgery on his back so hes out for a few days.

If nothing changes at all when you unplug vs. plug your MAF, then you have a bad MAF....

Do you have a way of testing fuel pressure? It's possible your fuel pressure regulator went bad causing it to inject way too much fuel.

stryfe thanks for chiming in. iv been trying to find a maf to use for a week. i dont have a job so im trying to find somebody that has a s14 sr20 so i can use the maf. broke ass homies all got s13 sr's hahah. im trying to find another.
hellaflush i tried cleaning this one, it was dirty near the sensor, didnt do anything. you had the same symptoms as me??

ok so i installed a z maf known good maf and the car idles good sometimes, and sometimes it idles low and runs super rich. and if i shut the car off, try and turn it back on i have to unplug the maf and its really hard to start. and then after it starts poors black smoke. low rpms runs pretty shitty.. what can i check for? thanks
settings changed for the z maf on the safc also.

Why would you get a z maf? Should have just gotten an s14 sr maf instead of messing with your safc

so why would you say your sr is on a stock tune then say you have a safc? something doesnt add up... also you can use a sohc, or s13 sr maf, just get a pigtail with it and make a quick disconnect system.
just blows my mind that you have a car running like poo so you "upgrade" something. remove the dam safc and go to stock maf
