Have you Looked into this problem by opening the trunk and making sure the previous owner didn't to re wire it with speaker wire?

Check the sensor on the brake pedal. It's like a buton that touch the ''arm'' of the brake pedal. It should bump against a rubber plug. If nothing touches it (like there's a hole where the sensor button is) then your rubber plug broke.

The plug in your brake pedal may have disintegrated.
Same thing happened to me, I have some info here:
Brakelights don’t work – why? (http://givemeshred.com/brakelights-dont-work-why/)

There is a rubber bumper mounted on the brake pedal that actuates the switch. Over the years, the rubber will dry out and the bumper can fall out, leaving nothing to press on the switch.

www.240SXTECHDVDS.org Home Page (http://www.240sxtechdvds.org) has FSM's specific for your car so you can track the wires.

Just wanted to say that in my write-up, I used one of those plastic interior plugs as a substitute.
I thought it would be a stop gap, but it's worked AMAZINGLY well.
I'm in the middle of rebuilding my car, had the dash and steering column out and the plug has no markings on it whatsoever, completely fine.
I'm leaving it in, no sense fixing it if it ain't broke.
EDIT: This is going on 18 months since I replaced the plug.

Can any one tell me y there would be a brown and orangish cable hooked up to my fuses....I think there audio but that's what caused the lights to go out....ohhh and I guess the previous owners had the same problem because there where a lot of fuses and a couple of plugs in the ashtray :)....but yea would any one know what the cables in the fuse box are for...they where on fuse 15 stoplamp and I think fuse 10audio or something like that

take tail lights off and scrub all the ground connections they get corroded and cause this.
