Hey guys i know this is a noob question but i am going to rebuild my ka24 and will most likely put a turbo on it... Is it really necessary to install forged piston? Or just go with the regular ones? Or the regular oversized ones??? Please help

i think you gotta take apart the block and start measuring before you by oversize to see if you even need it . anyone correct me if im wrong.

Oh ok but does having oversize pistons mean more HP???

You can just use SR20DE pistons and RB20 rings and be fine.

you forgot connecting rods out of a 1j...

But seriously, take the motor apart and send it to a machine shop. They'll tell you what you need.

No no, he needs KA rods, they are stronger.

agreed, just take it to a machine shop, tell them you want to boost it, they should be able to help you out.

whats your power goals, how much money are you willing to spend

If the cylinders are ok, they make just need to be honed and you can use regular sized pistons. If they need to be bored, you will have to go larger....only way to know is if you you take the pistons out and inspect the cylinders for any deep scratches or take to a machine shop. Depending on the age of the motor, you should be able to see the OEM crosshatches/ don't get them confused for wear.

It's useless to buy pistons beforehand.

Well the only reason im rebuilding it its because i need new HG might as well rebuild it? But i want a turbo for it later on....

^^ Cant go wrong with this setup....This would be a beast build right here. The very best of the SR and RB motors together with a KA. Do it!

So besides the sr pistons and rb rings what else do i need to finish my rebuild?

The main reason i opted for forged internals in my sr is for the sake of longevity. It's something I didn't want to worry about later on, even though I was told ~350whp would be fine on stock internals. Also something to keep in mind is that the upgraded internals you go with are likely lighter than stock, making your engines job easier.

Oh so if i go with regular pistons i can still turbo? But not to much boost???

If he goes with forged pistons will he need to go forged crank to?

Just take it apart. Go to the machine shop. Listen to what they have to say. Which is most likely getting forged pistons. Do as your told. Put it together and vroommm you got a motor.:bigok:

I was simply trying to give you some insight on my choice for going with forged. Remember I mentioned that I have an sr, you are talking ka.

forged pistons and rods, ALC bearings, ARP head studs, good head gasket, a descent head setup, and you will be good to go turbo without having to worry about anything going wrong. Also, im not saying go crazy on the head, do 12mm head studs, or bore the shit out of the engine...im just saying do what is needed to make the engine solid, for what you want it to do.

CP Pistons, OEM rods (they're forged already) stock crank...and that's really all you need for bottom end to be boosted and prob run like....idk 8-12lbs with no worries...

dont take it apart if u dont know what ur doing take it to the machinist and have them take it apart and measure as they need to and then u can go from there...but b4 u do anything look up prices on the parts ur plannin on getting (not cheap), cause the labor dependin in ur area is more than likely gona b high as hell...especially if they kan tell that u dont know shit...

get ready to grab ur ankles and dont even exspect a reach around...

Fuck all this noise about rebuilding your engine. Just get an VQ37 bottom end out of the 370Z and reuse your stock KA head on it. Stock 370Z puts down what? 330hp with the KA24 head putting down 155 hp, should put you down to...umm....330+155, 5+0, umm 5+3...gets you 485hp!!! More power hp than any RB26 engines out of Skylines, those engines only put down 280hp. Even more HP than an LSx swap out of a corvette!!!
