View Full Version : Need help with registration issues

So I bought another s13 coupe and like an idiot didn't know it was a salvage title reconstruction. This is not the issue as it runs fine, has a straight frame and has no issues.
The problem is that it is an out of state title transfer which is a whole nother process when dealing with a salvage-reconstruct, which the first person at the DMV had overlooked and the second person caught. So now here's the new set of hoops the CA peoples republic has required me to jump through:
1) Break and light inspection at a local auto shop so that I can proceed to step 2
2) Temporary registration till I finish the process
3) CA smog
4) CHP inspection to verify the "restored" condition of the vehicle for the new salvage title
Here are the problems I need your guy's help with:
1) Front right corner light is busted so I need to replace it before I can even get to step one. However I can't find just one on ebay and all they have is set's of two and for some reason ppl think they are really worth 100 to 150 a set which is retarded... Anyone got just one i can purchase? Is there anyone in the Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte, or Mendocino area that has one and doesn't want to part with it and is willing to let me borrow it (against collateral of course) so I can get the inspection?
2) California Highway Patrol inspection... Does anyone know what this is? gone through it themselves? know what it entails? and, most importantly, know if they inspect underneath the hood? Also this new car has a silvia front end with HID's and will this be a problem?
This whole thing seems like more of a pain in the a** than I need because I don't really plan on living in this state much longer

#2 is probably just about like Missouri's State Highway Patrol inspection which is required for any Salvage title vehicle that has been rebuilt. It's basically just an officer looking for any signs of stolen parts, you may be required to provide proof of purchase for any part that is now installed that has a VIN on it that doesn't match the cars VIN (if any).

Huh but other than the vin plate in the engine bay, on the dash under the windshield, and in the door jam where else is there VIN numbers? And how would I / the officer look for this?
I read up on it earlier and found a few places where ppl said this was to prevent the use of stolen parts on the reconstruct however I'm kinda stuck cus I don't even know what was broken and fixed and it seems like there's no way to figure out through the paperwork

you`re just gonna have to go through the inspection and do what they tell you to do or need to have. and yes, they will look under the hood. plus i think it`s a good thing so that in the end, you will know you have a safe car.

Ok shit... now i guess i just gotta cross my fingers and hope that they dont notice the SR.
I know its safe cus I thoroughly inspected it myself when I bought it and know that there is nothing seriously wrong with it. But I'm more curious because I bought it from a kid who had it restored and it passed the other states inspection and its just cus cali doesn't recognize other states' reconstruction inspections. The main issue is that I dont have any of the receipts and I dont even know what was wrong in the first place, like I said it is in perfect condition and whoever did the work did a good job bringin it back to stock. Is there a way for me to sequester these documents from the other states DMV?

If your gonna show up to an inspection with a SR minus well not inspect it at all... youll likely get impounded for having an illegal motor

yeah what he said ^^^^^^^^ and the highway patrol will flag and fail you for the lights alone because they are japanese and arent approved by the U.S. department of transportation! you would need all the parts from a usdm s13 because the us approval process is a lot more strict than the japanese process and highway patrol inspectors are pure assholes! GOOD LUCK!!!

Also make sure you didn’t put you bought the car for $500 etc on your paper work if it looks like it’s in really nice condition/worth more than the price that you put you paid. I knew someone who went to the CA chp inspection like that and the officer was going to arrest him and charge a felony for lying to the state because he put that he paid $500 for a old civic with nice paint lol those people at the chp inspection place can be A$$ holes. :hey:

well I wanted to say that I bought it for 1500 but the guy who sold it to me already put 5200 on the paperwork so at least I dont have to worry bout that...
So basically what ur saying is that I should just not even bother with the CA reg and all that because they will most likely just impound my car..... Great, good thing I drank a considerable amount tonight, makes this news easier to bear.... I do live close enough to OR I could just re reg it up there.
Seriously FUCK cali and their rules

my car was a reconstruction as well and it had a michigan title and I live in CA as well, I did the whole thing through AAA, I knew going to the DMV would be a pain in the ass. I suggest get yourself a AAA membership if you don't have one already and go check what they tell you, I had to do Vin verification, and smog and saftey check and got it registered with no problems. Hope this helps, Let me know if you need more infor

Yeah I'm a AAA member and I tried to do this through them but they wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Maybe its just cus the AAA offices in the small towns I live near aren't equipped to handle it. Either way the CHP inspection is what I'm worried about. Aside from swapping out the SR and Silvia front I will fail and apparently they'll impound it if they see the SR.
So new solution is "moving" to Oregon... Anyone know about getting a new license and re-registering a car if you haven't lived in the state for that long? To clarify the current title is in Oregon so it would only be a change of owner re-register
