View Full Version : discuss your short shifters!!

Forgive me if this is a repost, I did a quick search and didn't see any recent threads on this. This isn't a question thread, this is me asking you guys your opinions on what's in your car.
What Short throw shifters do you have in your car? B&M seems to be the most popular. I've seen some eBay ones and I saw that Megan Racing makes one.
Can anyone with an actual B&M elaborate as to what makes them so good? To anyone else with other brand short shifters, please post what you have and your opinion on it! How short is the throw?
I'm getting a Z31 within the next few days and it seems my only option for a lot of things are to buy S13 parts and modify them and/or fabricate adapters to make them work with the Z haha.
If there is already an SS discussion thread, my apologies and please link me to it

i had a megan.. worst crap ever. rattle like crazy and idk it didn't feel right.
Then i man up and got a B&M, one of best $200 and some change i spent on my car.
Anyways the B&M doesn't rattle and it's nice and tight ;). Also i had it for about a year or so now too and still feels the way it did new.

my B&M rattles at high rpm :(

Yeah, I've been reading individual SSK threads. Some have said the ISIS rattles too after a certain point. I would believe it had to do with something not being screwed tight enough. If it still rattles under certain rare situations like high rpm at high speed, I would think any of them would do that. Also hear that ISIS and B&M feel the same once installed.
Found the solution to the rattling in this thread: short-shift prep thread (http://zilvia.net/f/chat/372085-short-shift-prep.html)
Most rattling is from using the white bushing that goes into the fork that is originally on the aftermarket shifter. Buy an OEM Nissan shifter bushing and swap them out.
A pic for reference of what I'm talking about:

I had a B&M in my old S14 in 2003, and have a Deluboz (http://www.delubozparts.com/ProductCart/pc/viewCat.asp) one in my current S13 from when they were still on Ebay. Daily drove on it from March 2007 until this past July when I got another daily without issue.
My B&M was one of the early ones that rattled like fuck, and so does my current, so really the only difference was having paid a third of the price and the color.

I'm using a Tomei with a cusco shifter bushing. Very precise and has the perfect throw imo. I think C's short shifter is very similar in design. Drove a friends car with a B&M, nice but too notchy and too short of a throw for me.

This guy speaks mad truth. I hate driving people's cars who don't have one, it feels so awkward. Anyway, I have a Circuit sports and I love it. Its got a nice throw and its quite short. It does rattle while highway driving, but it never used to till I took it on an 8 hour drive.

i have one in my s13 and it feels great (no rattles). i think it does give the feel of a newer car cause my friends s14 doesn't have one and like everyone else said it feels sloppy and old.

My isis rattles on the track constantly -.-
I also installed a solid shifter bushing on it beforehand...what a waste..

I used to have a B&M shifter on my car. It does rattle;especially, at high rpm. Now I have a HKS short shifter. I will say the best that I've seen so far: very precise,no rattle and it makes you feel like you're driving a real race car. I love it.

i bought the cheapest one i could find on ebay.
i think i payed about $25 shipped.
it is c's garage style, i added an oem shifter bushing and put a flat rubber washer in between the two pieces to dampen rattle.
i've been using it for more than two years, no complaints or regrets.

B&M with twm 16 oz. weight shifter. no rattles until about 5500 rpm daily driven, shifts like butter. no slop whatsoever. had C's style shifter before and the B&M is a different world of precise shifting.

It seems as though B&M has the shortest throw? That's good, that's what I'm aiming for. But now will consider other ones for price reasons of they're getting good reviews anyway.
While we're at it, what are people's choices on shift knobs? Brand and source perhaps?

You can mix and match. There are a couple different combos that you can add or subtract to get a return stiffness that you like.
I can feel the difference a lot, the shifter has ZERO slop and is very tight.

I have an ISIS short throw. Rattled, but all you have to do it take off the c clip that holds the weigh on the shaft and pull it off and just put some electrical tape or something on it to keep it from moving. Pushed it back on, reinstalled c-clip and didn't have a rattle for about two years. It's starting to rattle a bit now again but I don't care enough to mess with it.
Only complaint is that's it's got some slack in the mechanism I guess, and I can turn the shifter clockwise and counterclockwise just a bit. It still feels great and precise, but just has that little bit of play to it so it doesn't feel as nice as it could.

depends on how your car is already. i have a buddy club spec 2 and solid mounts. i could hardly hear it over the exhaust and my car vibrating.
so does anyone still sell spring kits. i know CS did. but idk if people still stock it. i guess i be better off going to ace hardware and getting stiff as shit springs.
i have a question about the springs too. do you just replace the two side ones or is it also good to replace the one that you have to remove the shifter to get to.

My question is what brand makes the actual shifter "short" as in the height of the shifter not the shifting, a friend of mine years back had one on his S13 that made the shifter height really short, kinda like in a Mazda miata or an early model Toyota mr2, but I can't seem to find one like that, all the ones I find are about the same size as stock, also does anyone have any pics of theirs?

I bought a B&M, I believe V1, rattled like crazy, and occasionally grind-ed, very annoying. Went to ISIS after reading reviews, had more grinding and still rattled alot. One of my major complaints with the ISIS which did not happen with the B&M or stock is that for a slow roll (say stop and go traffic) its impossible to go back to 1st gear. I never had these issues with the stock one so went back to stock. would not recommend either product.

History Class Time...
C's (Commander's) was one of the original Short Shifter producers and closed its doors around 2000. B&M made copies of their design (V1, which was a crappy replica) and then modified it (V2, is much better).
For its era and even tody the C's is better than most of what is available on the market, and even Tomei rebranded and #ed a short line of C's shifter as their own.
Nismo is a Solid Shifter with a shorter stalk only, and its filled with rubber.
Attain is nice and solid but doesn't use the change in fulcrum like the C's., its also a Copy of the Nismo, only solid Stainless Steel.
URAS oh god... its a stick, no fulcrum change... and you feel everything
Cusco has a Copper Bushing... I highly suggest getting one and replacing the stock plastic.
I also suggest playing with different Shift Knobs... Weight, Feel, etc..

$30 ebay short shifter made of billet steel. Super solid, NEVER missed a shift in the 1.5 yrs I've have it ( many drift events). Doesn't wobble, rattle, or anything. no point of spending 150 on a B&M unless ur rich or something. Super strong steel, doesn't feel like it will snap or break when I slam through gears.

I feel like the stock shifter is better for daily driving and the short shifter is for aggressive driving. Either way, the only reason i bought one is because the threads on my stock shifter were stripped and only the ugly stock shift knob would fit on it because it was stripped too.

it all depends on what you use the car for and the motor/tranny setup.
for ka/sr - ebay shifters are junk.
B&M feels to grindy. for drifting i preferred stock shifter and took b&m out and sold it.
for LSX
5.0 shifter hands down. best mod to the drivetrain.

Figured I would chime in since I have a B&M in my hatch and a Isis in my coupe.
The B&M is really crisp and has almost too short of a throw but I do like it a lot. I have the V2 and my only real complaint is that it starts to rattle around 5k rpm but I got used to it. I have had it for about 4 years in two different cars and it still feels the same as the day I got it. Its defiantly worth the money.
The Isis feels about the same as the B&M but it doesn't rattle at all. One major complaint that I have about it though is that there is some play in the shaft itself. Its pretty solid but if I turn the shift knob the whole shaft turns about a 1/4 inch. While this doesn't really affect functionality, it is a little irritating. I haven't had it very long so we'll see about longevity but I'm pretty pleased with what I got for the $45 dollars I paid for it on Ebay (wasn't sold as Isis but came in a Isis box). Now going back and forth between cars isn't as weird lol.

The Nismo shifter for the S-chasis is NOT actually a short shifter. They are solid shifters. They have the same geometry as the stock shifter while eliminating the rubber bushing in the stock one. The throw is not any shorter...
I currently have a B&M shifter and IMO it's too notchy for my tastes. It is very precise and it does not rattle at all, but the feel isn't how I like. I'm considering "trading it in" for a Tomei shifter that's for sale...

Yes, just like the Nismo engine mounts it's just modified stock. I do see that they advertise a 10% shorter throw, but that's such a miniscule amount I doubt you would notice even if it is actually fact. I would like to set one side by side with a stock one and measure it to see for sure. Even if it is 10% shorter though that's not really a "short shifter". My B&M must be about 75% shorter throw (exaggeration)...
This link actually explains how they shortened the throw:
NISMO Solid Short Shifter Silvia (http://www.rhdjapan.com/nismo-solid-short-shifter-silvia-11581)
Apparently they shortened the shift lever by 7.5mm and that's supposed to be a 10% difference. The shifter geometry is exactly the same as a stock shifter. I guess you could call that a short shifter, but you can do the same thing to your stock shifter by installing a shorter shift knob...
Not really a short shifter...

thats what i was thinking but has anyone used one? does it feel different at all? beacuse it looks very similar to stock (like most nismo products)which i dont entirely mind, i mean nismo comes out with some good and clean products.to truely figure out if the throw is different one would have to compare the nismo shifter and the oem one side by side and dothe math by a 7.5mm difference..ive always been on the fence about getting one because id like good short throws to improve shift time but i dont want my 240 to shift like a miata either which is why i was interested in the nismo shifter. ive also heard that short shifters wear down the life of your synchros.:-/

It doesn't feel like stock because not only is the lever slightly shorter but the rubber bushing is stiffer as well. Besides that any stock shifter is going to be worn and have additional play because of that. Of course it feels much better than a worn-out stock shifter. I'm not saying that It's not better than stock, I'm just saying it's not a true short shifter. If you look at other short shifters the geometry of the shifter has been changed. The pivot has been moved up and the lower section of the shift lever is much longer than stock. The Nismo unit is not like that. It simply has a bit shorter upper shift lever. There's nothing wrong with the Nismo one, it's just not really a short shifter...
I'm sure Nismo is advertising the wrong percentage of throw shortening. That makes sense...

Want a badass, cheap alternative? Here is a link (http://www.cosmoracing.com/productlist.asp?cid=137) . I ran one of them in my 180SX in Okinawa for a couple years and loved it! The feel is solid & precise... It's a very well-made, single-piece, good quality shifter... and the price is like a sore dick- can't beat it.
Since then, I've switched to a CA tranny w/SR bellhousing and run a C's short shifter w/HKS return springs... Absolutely LOVE IT and will never change it unless absolutely necessary.

My S13 has a B&M short shifter. I can say it feels totally different than any other shifter I've used. When I went to test drive my current S13, I seriously didn't think I even had it in gear, lol. You barely have to move the shifter in any direction before you find a gear.
I've gotten used to it now, so when I drive my brother's car, it feels like the shifting takes miles.

Me and you both. I just ordered one for a steal from GT-R garage [half of what everyone on Zilvia likes to sell with drift tax included] and it looks brand new. I also ordered the brass bushing that CS makes via FRSport. I cannot wait to throw this thing in. From all the reviews people are throwing up, this should be the kill shot setup.

What do you guys think about eBay short shifters? The ones with the plate and is a direct copy of B&M?
Some are really affordable and if the shifter is comprised of only a few moving parts, it should be good right? Just change the bushing to Cusco and it should be ok I suppose.

I tried an ISIS short shifter in my S13 for a while but the rattling drove me crazy. Now I'm running a modified stock shifter. I shortened it up 1.5" and added some additional angle to it, essentially moving it closer to the driver while reducing shifter travel. It doesn't feel as crisp as the ISIS but at least it doesn't rattle.

It looks good, however it functions way better than it looks! (100% billet, CNC machined, bearing design, best hardware that can be bought. It won't break....ever!) I have 4-5 ready to be assembled for shipment now, if people are interested. I will also have about 8 more ready in 2 weeks. I have 2 styles, one like the pictures above with stock SR style thread and taper so you can install any knob you currently have on your SR/KA/VQ (any C series Nissan trans). Or I have the one with the billet knob, which has a different thread and cannot be used with any other knob unless you make a custom adapter.

IIRC there are two bushings. Are you talking about the top or the bottom?
My Tomei shifter was missing the top spacer...went to Ace Hardware and got some plastic/nylon washers that stacked perfectly (I used like 3) on my Tomei shifter. Works great and no noise, super smooth, no slop and very short throws. Best shifter ever (I hear C's is pretty much the same as Tomei). Hated my old B&M style shifter.

My Tomei shifter was missing the top spacer...went to Ace Hardware and got some plastic/nylon washers that stacked perfectly (I used like 3) on my Tomei shifter. Works great and no noise... super smooth with very short throws. Best shifter ever (I hear C's is pretty much the same as Tomei). Hated my old B&M style shifter.
Top. I'm talking about the little gasket that goes on last after the metal bushing, wave washer, bush socket. I think it's not a big deal though.

Pretty sure it's to prevent rattle.

No, not that. The thing that prevents rattle is the rubber in the fat part of the shifter.

B&M - Bought the car with it back in 04/05. I've actually never driven a 240sx without one.
After the SR install and clutch upgrade I came to hate it. Way to firm and "clicky" when shifting. I have a CS bushing.
Ditched it for a worn out stock one that wobbles around in every gear. So much better, feels like butter. No miss shift issues or anything (learn to drive).

I say B&M is hands down the best shifter for 240sx. I have used my b&m on my ka motor for years and now its on my sr20 nothing but short super smooth shifts . I would try the tomei shifter if i didn't already have the b&m.

The shifter from a D21 truck can be used as a short shifter, as long is it used in the B&M-style shifter housing or with the Ebay shifter spacer plate.

Wow the v3 looks super dope.
I have the v2. It somewhat rattles but my weighted grex knob reduced it quite a bit.

V3 is definitely a good piece, I prefer it to my Tomei shift which is just accumulating dust

Does anyone on here have the ATP shifter? It is quite a neat design, but I am curious about its longevity as far as long-term daily use goes.

I like the V3 Circuit Sports. Although I couldnt find a shift knob that wouldnt rattle. I Teflon taped the crap out of everything Lol. I've been enjoying my C's unit lately.

I never had these issues with the stock one so went back to stock. would not recommend either product.
isnt there a lockout to prevent you from going into first? i never have an issue but when im going slow i just double clutch the transition and if youre rolling even a little bit just hit second.

Not a problem...just seems stupid to post on a dead thread to bump it to the top when its full of ancient information. Plus its annoying
