i just recently bought a ford explorer 92 and when i bought it it was supposed to have 140000 miles on it. it was bought from a used car lot. when i got home, i did a carfax on it and it seems to have like an extra 100,00 on it cause the odometer only says 40,000 so i dont know what i should do. is the car lot liable for it even though i dont thik that they were the ones that messed with the odometer? im pretty sure the original owner did it. so do they have to give me my money back? is there any specific sites i can go to?? thanks for the help!!

i doubt anyone messed with it, like actually physically rolling the miles back. old fords like that only go to 99k then reset.

yes i realize that they didnt physically roll it back but it was sold to me at 140000 when it actually has 240000. i dont know what to do. i mean if i were to sell it to someone else saying that it had 140000 and it had 240000 it would be my responsibililty ??????????

Well, two things here

Its a ford 92 explorer. I doubt it has 240,000 miles on it because apparently its still running.

or two

The dealership assumed there is no way it has 240,000 miles on it, and that the odometer rolled over only once.

If the odometer rolled over twice I would guess the dealership just made a mistake and assumed wrong. Let them know if it concerns you greatly. I still think a ford with 240,000 miles on it would be easy to tell from a ford with 140,000 on it.

It is illegal to misrepresent an automobile's mileage. If you take your carfax to the dealer I think they would HAVE to refund your $. I think you may want to call Judge Judy on this one.

As I have said before I used to work for the largest used car dealership oin the world. I was responsible for appraisals and such for some time and I was also in sales. Mileage misrepresentation can cause a dealership to get into MAJOR kimchee!

ok, thanks. but even if he didnt know about the mileage when he bought it, is he still liable for it as a dealer since he sold it to me?
This is the carfax report for the mileage. mileage is to the right of the date. what do you guys think? I mean the truck runs pretty good and is in excellent shape. do you think the ford dealership would be able to tell me what mileage it actually has??
thanks yall!!

Dude I find it hard to belive that it would even make it to 140,000
I guess stranger things have happened. Just take it back, you don't want a ford.

some family friends of mine have a 92 exploder with 280,000 miles on it and it still runs good. i'll believe it if it was well maintained.

i'd go back...show them the car fax...ask for a partial refund...keep the car...

get like $2000 back....call it a day and enjoy the car since you stated it was in such good condition...

yea, just bring it back, you will get something outta it if they misleaded you. my uncle bought a benz from a dealer, and they misleaded him with something (don't remember what), but he got them to pay him some money

my real question though:

anyone? anyone?

A reputable dealer ALWAYS does that. Carmax does.

well i tried to do a carfax and my credit card wouldnt go through then i came on here and posted a message about it and someone deleted my post.

the thing is, i bought the car from like a local car lot. the guy like runs it out of his house. so its not going to be that easy. he might be a hardass about it. that is why i want to know the hard facts that he is responsible for the car regardless if someone else did the actual fraud. because i know that he is going to say that he didnt know because the title says 140000. but he is still responsible for it right?

does anyone have any websites that i can go to so i can print out and go over there and lay the smack down that he is going to have to either give me some money back on the car or get a full refund. thanks

He's responsible for the item he sold. He told you it was 140k. I don't know if he said anything else about an accident. Someone is legally obligated to tell you all they know about what they sold you, from a candy bar (allergy info) or a car or a house. So if you bought something under what turns out to be false pretenses, you can get your money back. If he's a hardass, tell him you'll talk to a lawyer, and he'll end up refunding the car, paying for your lawyer and all the court costs. He'll cough up some money if he knows what's good for him.

What does the title say about the mileage? It probably says "miles not actual". If you saw that before making the purcahse, it seems that it would be hard to claim dealer misrepresentation. The best he could do was estimate the mileage.
