View Full Version : Down Pipe And Cat Hanging Super Low!

I need to figure out whats going on. Is it the Motor mounts and transmission mount? Its crazy. Its literally like 1 inch off the ground. It hangs WAAAAAAAY lower than the frame rails, and its a stock down pipe!
I just put on a buddy club spec 2 on it, and its actually hanging lower now than it did with the blitz nur spec. I can't even pull out my driveway, and my drive way is reaaaally flat.
Any input how to fix it?

thats about how low mine is, sucks doesn't it?
one option would be nismo motor mounts, which will raise the engine a bit.

You have the bracket from the downpipe to the transmission mount attached, correct? Do you have Circuit Sports poly exhaust hanger bushings or anything like that? Those might help a bit, but probably not a ton with the downpipe section.
I don't have any experience with the stock downpipe, so I don't know about where it sits or anything like that. Looks like it might be time for a PBM Cobra, though!

c/s poly hangers don't work as good as stock hangers with hose clamps on it, imo
cheaper, stiffer, and more common. its a bit ghetto but it works and doesn't do any harm
take it to an exhaust shop and have them shorten the hangers, and then re-adjust the downpipe

Lol I was gonna say this. Go to your 2nd to most rear hanger and wrap some hose clamps around it and tighten them down and it will raise the exhaust a bit.

I bought an aftermarket NA downpipe (megan racing) from FRsport because mine is just like your, maybe a little lower. I know aftermarket headers get pulled up more compared to stock. I will install it this weekend and take some pics if there is a difference.
This is the one I got btw

Ah yes, the ever-common "broke-ass method." What was I thinking. :wan: haha
The Circuit Sports ones don't have any sag at all to them though in my experience- it sure seems like they would work just as well as blown out stock ones with a hose clamp, if not better. But if you're in a pinch and need a quick solution, I guess the hose clamp thing makes sense.
This is all beside the point though, since I don't think that is going to help at all in this situation. I'm not sure anything can be done to bring the downpipe up while still using the factory downpipe.

Yea Putting clamps around the hangers isn't going to help. I don't understand why the whole thing sags lower now with the new exhaust system. My car is undrivable right now, And I need to get this fixed.
Does anyone think new motor and trans mounts will help?

I don't really understand what else would cause it to hang so low. Thats why I'm trying to get other peoples opinions on it.

As mentioned above, Nismo motor mounts will easily raise your motor a good inch.
That could help.
If you're still running stock mounts, you have to remember they're at least 20 years old by this point.

When I installed Nismo Mounts on my SR it did in fact raise the motor.
^^ beat me to it.

Alright. I'm picking up a nismo trans mount tomorrow, And I'm looking for some motor mounts, if anyone has any let me know. I need to get this fixed ASAP.

I was thinking about those, I just didn't know if the nismo's sat higher than Drift Freaq's.

New downpipe, new mounts, and new hangers. Do it all at once to witness the huge difference in feel. You can thank me later.

I'm stock Ka headers and downpipe. An aftermarket downpipe will sit up higher?

Take a jack and a piece of wood block and jack up lightly where the downpipe bends. Move tthe jack to different points for desired results!
Ghetto but works!

Probably not. Seems more like worn engine mounts and worn exhaust hangers. I would replace all your hangers first and see how much clearance you gain. If that still isn't enough, get some DF mounts!
I bought some new rubber exhaust hangers at Autozone. They are the same style as ours but on the package it says for various Hondas. The holes are slightly smaller but if you use some force and soapy water, they'll pop right in. Only like $6 each. You'll need 4.
edit: Looking at your picture a second time, did you install all 4 exhaust hangers on the exhaust? It almost looks like you only have the two in the back installed. And not the two other supporting exhaust hangers. If you go and shake your exhaust and its moving all over the place you need to replace them. If I try to shake my exhaust it won't budge at all.

Haha sounds like it might cause more problems than it will fix. I'd be afraid of breaking the manifold studs or something. I don't know, maybe I'm just paranoid.

I honestly don't think the hangers are going to pull it up that much.
I don't see anything else it could be besides the motor and trans mounts.
And yea I'm using all four hangers. When I try to move it around it won't move at all, its definitely super held on. Just sits wayyyy to low.

Those are adjustable, you'll have a little room to play with for ideal height.

take it to an exhaust shop and have them cut and reweld the dp, also sounds like you need new motor mounts. just choose whichever ones you like.

Do you guys think if I looked at the mounts I would be able to see them sagging? Because I opened my hood right now and looked at the engine mounts, and it looked to be about the same thickness as a new mount is.

I have no idea if your exhaust is hanging on all the hangers and is all tight. Might be the mounts as everyone is saying. Funny cus i just installed my new BC Spec 2 today and i dont think it affected how my down pipe and test pipe sat.

maybe he wants to be super cool..
but seriously just do driftfreak motor mounts/hoseclamps/or headers like a few people already stated above.
also it shouldn't hang that low with a BC spec 2 because i know mine doesn't and im pretty low.

S13 with SR and nismo mounts. I'll try and snap a pic of my clearance in a bit if you'd like.

I only ask what kind of car because I'm having all kinds of problems with the s13 fitment for the exhaust too.
Like its touching right where the stud is for the back drivers seat bolt, it's like 1 mm away from the diff.
So I'm afraid even if I raise the front up it's just gonna make everything touch worse.
But that might just be because the front of the exhaust is sagging so low, that the back is being pushe up because it isn't level.

So I'm pretty sure I figured out what some of my problem is.
The Buddy Club Spec 2's flange where it bolts to the cat is kind of tilted back at an angle. So when I go to bolt it up to the cat, when you start tightening down the bolts, it pulls down the back of the engine in order to get the cat and exhaust to bolt up flat. Kind of hard to explain.
But pretty much I need to I guess get the flange cut the on the Buddy Club and make it more flat weld it back up, so that way the angle of the Buddy Club's flange matches the angle of the flange on the cat.
Does that make sense?
Does anyone know of any good muffler shops in So Cal that will deal with a lowered car? The ones I've taken it to before I put the Buddy Club on the car wouldn't even bother trying to put it on a lift.

you know how the BC II is in two pieces? did you put the back piece upside down? so the angle isnt correct? But then maybe if that was the case it wouldnt even be able to be bolted up..idk. Why dont you try a new pipe or cat before cutting up a brand new exhaust?

Nah neither piece could be upside down because then none of the hangers would work.

This same thing happened to me when I put a stock cat on my car to pass emissions. I only used 1 bolt on the flange that holds the downpipe to the cat but that really let the cat rotate and drop waaaay down to where I was scraping all over. I put a bolt in the other hole and pushed the cat up as far as i could since there's a little slack in the hole, tightened it, and that fixed it.
In case you're wondering I was using a Trust 3" downpipe, stock cat, no exhaust to tranny mount, and Fujitsubo cat back
