:newbie:Hello everybody. I am planning to join the 240 club by getting hold of a s13 hatch. There's one for sale in the neighborhood for $3k. It's a 5speed 93 SE with ~140k miles. It's bone stock with a set of after market rims. The red paint job still looks good but there's a minor dent on the tail. Wondering if it's worth the price.
And sorry if this isn't the right section.

look man we all start somewhere I was new to this forum at one point if you want to be on this board you need thick skin because haters are always going to hate, flamers always going flame ext. Most members are just sick of all these people joining and asking retarded questions that could have been answered just by using google. In all seriousness I wouldn't pay more then 2000 tops depending on how bad you want the car good luck and welcome to Zilvia

Come to Cali and you will realize how good you have it with your dirt cheap 240's that nobody probably wants in the area. The demand here is different and you will not find cars for those prices.
To the OP: If the car runs with no problems (engine/tranny is good) I would say its worth around 1500-2000. Maybe less if its in worse condition than the pics make it seem.

3000 is a great price for a clean, unmolested DOHC (1991-1993) car like this one. Never hurts to try to talk him down though.
It's getting rare to find a 240sx that isn't a beat down piece of crap with mismatched body panels (which is what you normally find for the $2000 price range)

Why would I want to come to California then? Like I said, I bought mine over 8 years ago. Drift tax has now inflated prices to about 300% of what a rational person would pay for a busted 20 year old car with body damage and bobo wheels.

Unfortunately car heads are not rational people. We are dumb asses who invest tons of money into depreciating assets. I am sure you wouldn't know..
And like I said, this car is worth 1500-2000 if it is in good mechanical condition. But let me guess, a rational person wouldn't pay that for a car that will get them from point A to point B without any problems right?

Pricing right now is actually not that bad. The 240sx drift tax hit its peak around 08, till around the same time the economy popped. It wasnt uncommon for folks with clean, stock Kouki S14 sell them for $10k. Now everybody's broke or atleast holding on to their money.

No thanks, I am a public accountant I have a pretty good understanding of depreciation.
Once again, considering the market in California right now, the pricing is not that far off. Whether you paid $10,000 or $1,000 for your s14 8 years ago in another state is completely irrelevant to the OP's situation. Go feel good about your low priced s14 in another thread.

The car looks pretty good from what i see and interior looks fair. Take it for a drive and see how it feels. If you hear or feel like something isn't right about the car, walk away and find another. Trust me, don't jump on the first 240 you see. If the seller has records of past maintenance, the better. 3000 is too much anyways. Try to get him to 2300-2500 if you think the car is worth it. Good luck and do get some thick skin because there are some people in here that are assholes for stupid reason, not all though.

I know you feel like you're on an island in California, but the market across the country is actually pretty similar. Check this out for example:
fs/ft 90 240sx (http://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/2803331952.html)
Like I said before, drift tax made the prices go up and stay there. I don't feel good about my "low priced" S14 because it wasn't really that great of a deal back then.
The OP is going to do what he wants to regardless. I don't think that car is worth that much money. Apparently you don't either. I said I wouldn't pay 2k for it, and you said you would pay $1500-2000 (or maybe less). I'm not really sure what your point is, I guess.

My point was that your experiences were irrelevant to the OP's situation as I said in my previous post. Thats all. Saying that to someone who is new at this might lead them in the wrong direction. Then for some reason you started placing me in the "people who pay to much" category, and telling me to go back to honda-tech. Not sure why...

Dear Zilvians,
Since everyone else knows better, lets see cars in the same condition for sale near him for $1500 like you say they are worth.
Until then, I stand by my assessment that $3000 is a fair price for this car.

Looks like I stired up more interesting conversations than I planned to.
Anyway, I do still plan to go check out the car in person, but the most I'll probably lay down is 2.5k if it's in good mechanical condition. I am just hanging over on the fact that it is getting rare to catch a virgin rs13 nowadays. I don't really want them Motegi M7 wheels neither, may be I'll tell the seller to put the stock ones back on instead to cut more into the price(He originally expects to catch $4k:faint:). Will probably put on some low end gram light in the future.
Thanks everyone who said anything productive in the thread.
I'll look for more opinions before I make my decision.

There's a reason both of these cars are going for that cheap. Hint: It has to do with California.

They are all busted 20 year old cars that were poorly modded. The difference is price.

I would guess the problem is smog check, but can be solved by having hooked up smog test stations, and most OG tuners ought to have a bunch.
And I think the different impression ppl have on this one also has to do with their experience and their available asset. If you're an OG with all the skill and cash to do the right things to a beat up old car to make it competitive again, you would probably think the value of same model/year beat up car = clean stock car because you will do almost the same mods to the cars anyway.
But to someone who wants to start some where and don't got much to spend at the time, a clean, unmolested, and street legal ride that also got potential is
rather irresistible. If I got Bill's money I'd get Kawabata send me his 180 and legalize all 180s instead.

IMO If there is a super clean s13 for sale and someone wants it, they will most likely pay a premium to get it. The problem is that 95% of s13's/s14's are real big pieces and when a real clean one comes by, people think it is overpriced since they are comparing it to the rest of shitty s chasis' that are for sale.
Also, you cant judge the car until you see it, inspect the frame/body, and drive it. Those three things make a world of difference from what you might expect from just looking at pics and the FS posting.

His super clean one has a dented quarter panel... Lol if he's gonna modify why buy a "clean" one, and if he's not gonna modify it than why look/be on zilvia? If he wants a clean one he'd be better off finding an old person with one

When did I say that the one he was looking at was super clean?
And I am going to modify mine but I still wanted a virgin clean s14, why would I want to start with a POS? And why did I look on zilvia? Because I knew someone on here was a car enthusiast and kept their car in really good condition. Old people dont take care of their cars, they just dont try drifting and racing them...

I wouldn't look on here for the exact reason that someone thinks a 10-20 year old Nissan is worth 4 times blue book value just cause the body is straight I would advise the OP to "not pay a premium" for this car just my advice per the topic of this thread. An the reason I mentioned being on zilvia is because When I bought my daily it's not like I searched mazdas forums for it
