'89-'90 US 240SX came with the KA24E...2.4l SOHC
'91-'98 US 240SX came with the KA24DE...2.4l DOHC
Overseas most models came with SR20DE's and SR20DET's. Earlier ones came with CA18DE's and CA18DET's.

blades, just remember that when u added the "t" to the end of the engine names then they r turbo versions of them.

did both of these engines come with a turbo version in north america or is it only a european thing?

it's an overseas thing. we get n/a engines here. that's why ppl do sr20det swaps so they can have a turbo engine in their 240sx.

could ppl also swap a ka24det instead of sr20det if they preferred and if so which is better and why?? thanks in advance

There is no such thing as a "KA24ET" engine. You can install a turbo, of course. There is a supercharger kit being made available for the SOHC motors. But yes, you can install a turbo on a SOHC KA.

maybe you know this already, but if not this might help you understand everything:
every alpha-numeric character in the engine code stands for something.
KA, SR, CA --engine "family"
24, 20, 18 --displacement in liters times 10
D --Double OverHead Cam-DOHC; (lack of a D signifies Single OvereHead Cam-SOHC
E --EFI-Electronic Fuel Injection (I think)
T --Turbocharged; (lack of a T signifies lack of turbo--naturally aspirated (N/A) version of the engine)
So a KA24DE is a N/A 2.4L DOHC engine.
A KA24E is a N/A 2.4L SOHC engine.
These are the only two engines that came in 240SX's from the factory in the USA. However, some people choose to turbocharge this engine, effectively making it a KA24DET or a KA24ET. I guess a supercharged KA could be designated KA24DES/C or KA24ES/C.
SR20DET is a Turbocharged 2.0L DOHC engine.
This is by far the most popular Japanese motor swap for the 240SX. It comes in the Japanese Silvias and later 180SX's and in European/Australian 200SX's.
There is a non-turbocharged version (N/A), the SR20DE.
CA18DET is a Turbocharged 1.8L DOHC. It is a less popular but arguably equally capable. It came in early Japanese Silvias and 180SX's. There was also a CA18DE, a CA18ET, and CA16?E?.

Our very own "Links" section on the home page may be of some help...not to mention the forums themselves. Take a look at www.240sx.org ...maybe you can find some more general information there.
